Logic AFL Style -

- Happily spend some random six figure amount on the AFL logo, something which most never give 9/10ths of * all thought or care about.

- Goal review debacle extends to 3 GAMES IN A ROW - issue statement saying we got it wrong, will do our best to ensure it doesn't happen again (as much as we can without spending one more cent).

The league released this statement today:

The AFL advises the score review following a Jack Higgins (Richmond) shot for goal in the second quarter of the Round 12 match between Richmond and the Geelong Cats at the MCG has been assessed.

The available vision showed there was clear and sufficient evidence to overturn the umpire’s call of a behind to a goal, however, the score review official did not review this particular piece of vision.

AFL General Manager, Football Operations - Steve Hocking:

“The score review system was introduced to correct obvious scoring errors.

“In the last fortnight, there have been significant errors made during score reviews that have undermined the confidence of our clubs and the football public in the system.

“The AFL acknowledges that our players, our clubs and our fans are incredibly frustrated by each mistake, and we take full responsibility for them.

“We are committed to ensuring we have the best process and technology available and over the last few months have been examining all possible alternative to improve the score review system.

“We will keep the football public fully informed as we explore avenues to improve the system, such as the potential for a centralised officiating facility covering all venues and matches.

“In the interim we will continue to engage our score review officials, broadcast and technology partners in ensuring the current system operates as effectively as possible.”

It is clear that Steve Hocking has no grasp of the situation. We now have had three clusters by an organisation that receives significant revenue from bookmakers yet it can't identify basic mistakes from clear vision! Fortunately only one result may have been impacted however what would happen if this occurred in a close game at the end of the season or a final?

Instead of coming up with hair brain ideas about a play off between 10 and 8, how about getting what you have now correct. More chance of a goal being awarded correctly in the VAFA than the AFL

How about realising that you need the best people available to be doing the reviewing.

The AFL logo doesn't require any alteration, it's already a good logo. My guess is they just wish to incorporate the AFLX and AFLW into it all? 1560028721376.png The NFL logo changes over the past 60 years....not much of a difference is there? The AFL must get the score review system working instead of friggin' around with logos!

The AFL are doing the logo review on the cheap (seriously)

If they got a serious PR firm like Edelman involved they could easily spend a lot more money than that.

You reckon McDonalds / KFC / Nike / Adidas / Apple / Sony / Samsung / Banks / Accounting firms / YSL / D&G / etc / etc ‘only’ spend $100K on their logos?

The masses scoff at the ridiculous expense of branding, and yet those same masses get sucked in to worship at the temple of brands.

You've missed the point.

It will take a lot more than 6 figures to fix the score review system - for a start the league needs to install their own cameras at every AFL venue, rather than relying on the vision from channel 7 and Foxtel.

Even though the most recent errors aren't related to camera quality, why can't they get better quality cameras? It's a billion dollar industry. If price is such a concern, put them in at the most used venues to begin with. It's better than what we have now. Watch the F1 and see how much detail the SS cameras show.

The broadcaster spent all their $$$ on the rights, nothing left for the equipment.

Yeh, because obviously they cannot fix the goal review system, AND hire external consultants on their logo, what were they thinking. All the managers have to sit around their computers waiting for the logo to come through, who can do that and worry about the game as well.

Well yes, but there are priorities and putting an unnecessary rebranding before the integrity of the game is lunacy.

The AFL employ dedicated umpires who do nothing else but officiate the goals. They employ 3 field + 2 boundaries + 2 goal + 1 emergency = 8 umpires for every game. How many other sports do that? Fair to say that the AFL have prioritized it - but have fallen short in the execution?

What review incident happened today? (I was at local football)

Carlton won. AFL officials are going back through the tapes to find where the mistakes must have happened.

Thing is the AFL created this rod for their back when they introduced a goal review system which has since its inception proven itself a complete shambles.

Hands up those that would be happy for the goal umpire to be the final arbiter of these decisions? Yes, I have my hand up & will continue to do so until they spend a very small fraction of those BILLIONS they earn every tv rights deal doing it right.

The current AFL logo (that's been in place since 2000) doesn't even need changing, it's not like the old AFL logo from the 90's which was starting to look dated even by 1999.

Just a total waste of time and resources which could be better spent on so many other areas.

The AFL logo should not change from the current iteration. It should be timeless. The original one was bad but this one is fine, it should be used in perpetuity.

The AFL are seriously touched in the head fiddling while the MCG burns.
