Our midfield is far to one dimensional;

As much as i love Oliver he gets rid of the ball way to quickly and just creates pressure and panic. Greg Williams was a terrific handballer but because he put blokes into a better position than himself
Viney - his kicking way below afl standard and just has tunnel vision, once again not a great handballer when he needs to be.
Brayshaw - likes to kick but far to often turns it over, he looks better when he kicks short

Harmes - is our only true well rounded mid, a good kick and handball. Picks the right times to go long and short.

The herald sun reported yesterday our 3 works kicks inside 50 are brayshaw oliver and viney, if they arent kicking well inside 50 they are kicking well anywhere else

Despite the hype around 'choas" footy in the finals last year this is the exact opposite of how we should be playing, we are no. 18 in the AFL for marks and no.1 for playing on. We have no ability to control the tempo of a game, the faster we move the ball the more susceptible we are to being scored out the back.

As soon as the ball leaves the contested area we have no ability to defend and even if the opposition turn it over, we don't have the skill to punish them on the counter attack.

We desperately need to improve winning the ground balls inside 50, in fact just winning some easier footy around the ground.

Have we tried at anytime this year to put our best kicks into the centre bounces? Clearly Viney, Oliver, Harmes and Brayshshaw are killing us by foot going forward. Have we tried putting Salem, Fritsch or Melksham(when fit) into the middle? Kicking efficiency moving forward is killing us. Maybe mix it up a little more at centre bounces to see if we can find something that works for next year. Oliver, Salem and Melksham at the centre bounce could be a solution. Fritsch has to be moved forward also.

Salem looked concussed because he was giving the ball back to the opposition at will which resulted in goals

Losing Frost early pretty much ruined our backline tactics, Lever had to play on a man

T McDonald's confidence is officially shot, needs a stint in Bali or Casey

Hannan looks terrible with his marking, second guessing himself which is concerning

We miss Jetta, Melksham and VandenBerg so much

Love Viney but the guy can't kick over a jam jar...lucky to get 30mts and lets not even start on the accuracy.

Its tough when effectively one mid can't kick further than an U15's kid on a sunday afternoon

I defended him to the hilt barely a week ago but he was putrid yesterday, I can’t think of one good thing to say about his game

tbh i was very surprised that Frost was the one that came off worse from the head clash, seeing how Salem missed two weeks with concussion issues

I’d line up the following way next game;

Hore May Lever
Hibberd Frost Baker
Viney Oliver Salem
Petracca Smith ANB
Hunt Weidemann Fritsch
Gawn Harmes Brayshaw
I/C Hannan Jones Wagner Spargo

No point leaving Fritsch down back, need to utilise his kicking and play him forward. Salem has to be played on a wing, we’ve got no options in the Middle currently that are better skilled. Tom McDonald just has to go. Smith a better proposition right now. Honestly. He is totally void of confidence and yesterday highlighted it to a tee. Hunt forward, ANB in.

When Fritsch played his best footy for the Dee's it was arguably up forward and he can take a grab as a third tall so why not look at him forward of the ball...at least he can spot up a target if he gets it outside fifty.

Harmes is our best kick, so don’t be lump him in with the others.

Melkshan played in the midfield against the tigers didn’t really take note of games after that.

You need to find the balance, you can’t just have all good kicks in the midfield because then you loose your ability to win the stoppage. The issues is 3 of our 4 main mids are not just bad kicks, they are our worst kicks.

FYI we won 16 centre clearances to 6 yesterday. We scored 0.3 to Collingwood 2.2

Spot on.

'Our brand' of football (aka Melbourne 2018) is dead. It had a short run of success during 2018 off the back of our manic pressure, but it obvious to everyone (except perhaps the coaching staff...) that it will not lead to success. You get found out quickly in AFL these days. Opposition know that they can prey on our poor skill execution and decision making, and pick us off on the rebound. If the manic pressure drops off, then the outcome is even worse.

We seem to be able to win the ball. We need to learn to control the tempo of games so we actually do something fruitful with it.

Winning football games isn't about having a particular 'brand'. It's about having a coaching group and playing list with a sufficient amount of aptitude to keep adjusting (and then being able to implement) the game plan to stay ahead of the competition.

We've fallen a long way behind in the space of 6 months.

What strikes me is how dumb and one dimensional we are. Yes, we can win contested ball but most teams probably could if they had the same moth to flame mentality that our mids do, the trouble is what comes after; I get annoyed at Gawn for being in the play but he seems to be the only mid smart enough to spread from congestion for a handball receive, but once he gets the ball his option is to flub kick under pressure or handball back into the traffic jam where our dumb as * mids are still standing flat footed. We rarely switch as an offensive move, nor do our players create space by running angles, nobody seems to lead at the ball carrier and our skill level is sub AFL standard. Effort seems to begin and end with CP, there are teams that are younger, less experienced and talented but no team is lazier, dumber or more bereft of structure.

If this team were a boxer we would be a big dumb campaigner with a glass jaw that tries to end a fight with one punch but loses because the opponent can duck, weave, absorb and counter punch us into submission. After the loss we still believe throwing wild haymakers and leading with the chin is our ‘DNA’.

If this team were a cricket team we would be a batting lineup of blokes who try to hit a six every ball. When bowling we would get carried away with short s**t. Never mind that we get rolled for 40 by good bowling lineups or concede 500 in day in the field, it’s our brand and it’ll turn around.

If Goody were a coach he’d be Arsene Wenger. (Not when he was good, when he was old and crazy)
