A really disappointing saga for Afghanistani cricket. Aside from the obvious poor player management and lack of courtesy that has resulted in a key player finding out he is no longer in the squad through an ICC press release allegedly. By confirming that he played his opening games unfit as well and suddenly in the middle of a World Cup that's longer acceptable, it smells a bit like the board took this route because they just weren't happy with his output in the tournament so far. If he makes a 50 and a 100 rather than a 0 and a 7 do I see this mess happening, seems unlikely.

They'll do well to get a win during the rest of the tournament. Which would be a pity for them after how good they looked while they were outplaying Sri Lanka not long ago

Still awaiting a full translation, but the essence of it so far is that Shahzad was told he was unfit and being sent home because of his knee, even though the MRI used for it dates from the warm-ups - so he played two games with this injury without issue.

He alleges that Gulbadin was unhappy with him because of his keeping and lack of footwork while batting. Phil Simmons had no say over what happened. Furthermore, he says that Asghar Afghan was dropped with a fake injury as well, and that Gulbadin has become arrogant. He, along with Nabi and Rashid, strongly criticised the decision to remove the captaincy for Asghar before the tournament.

With all this happening, I don't see any way Afghanistan wins a game. Scotland would've put up a better, and certainly more professional, performance. The ACB needs a cleanout, as does the ODI team. Of the current squad of 15, the only ones I would keep around for the time being are Hazratullah (to see whether he can make it), Rashid, Rahmat, Najibullah and Aftab, along with Nabi until he retires. Too many players that are better suited to the longer format, or shouldn't be in the squad at all.
Sad to see, hopefully Afghanistan can overcome this bush league political nonsense. Seems similar to how Zimbabwe and Kenya got derailed.

Wonder what the ICC thinks, if Shahzad is actually fit and the board is just saying he isn't whats to stop Australia from similarly declaring Stoinis injured to parachute MMarsh into the tournament?

Was listening to a bit of BBC 5 today. They where talking about the India v Pakistan match coming up.Played in Southampton with a capacity of 25,000.Massive enquiries from Indian+Pakistan fans from all over Europe. They have received over 400,000 enquiries about tickets.

Think it's Old Trafford in Manchester, but yeah. Cricket grounds in England don't really have the capacity for huge crowds.

His MRI does show ligament damage, so if they could find the same for Stoinis...

They where saying it's a lot to do with recent events between both countries. 25 Indian police officers on the Pakistani border last year. Not really sure what happend but it will be sorted out on the Cricket pitch.

Yeah, so lucky the 2015 World Cup was played in fine, perfect conditions with no washouts or rain interruptions...

There was a grand total of one washout for the whole tournament. This tournament is well on track to have the most of any WC ever.

Lack of reserve days for the premier competition of world cricket is farcical.

Especially for a tournament played in the UK.

The world will go on, its only sport etc, but seriously, what a joke.

Look I agree, but the meltdowns from the peanut gallery about how slow the tournament, in particular world cups are run, led on bigfooty by a certain bombe-cum-swan "supporter" would just be unbearable.

I was concerned pre tournament that Gilly would be right about a team scoring 500. It could still happen of course but I'm happy that we haven't seen a team crack 400 so far.

Don't worry though, if a bowler goes for six or seven an over it's melts all round like it's 2000 again.

Women's World Cup match attracts bigger TV audience than cricket

England’s victory over Scotland attracted average audience of 4.6 million, compared with 550,000 for men’s cricket

Women’s football is now more popular than cricket – at least when it comes to TV ratings.

England’s victory over Scotland in the Women’s World Cup attracted an average audience of 4.6 million viewers to BBC One on Sunday evening. This set a new record for a women’s football match and left the broadcaster hopeful that millions of viewers will continue to tune in as both national teams progress through the tournament.

By comparison coverage of England’s matches in the men’s Cricket World Cup has been averaging a mere 550,000 viewers, despite cricket’s status as a traditional British summer sport and the tournament being hosted in the UK.

While women’s football is exploding in popularity and benefitting from the BBC’s promotion on its free-to-air channels, live cricket has been mainly confined to Sky Sport’s paid-for packages for the last 14 years, restricting the number of people who can watch.

This has revived longrunning concerns that, despite the substantial funding provided by Sky’s investment in the rights to show cricket on television, it is undermining the broad appeal of the sport.

England Cricket World Cup viewing figures peaked at the end of last Monday’s showdown with Pakistan, when Sky attracted a combined audience of 1.3 million viewers to the final minutes of its coverage of the match, according to official figures provided by the analysis company overnights.tv.

By comparison the England v Scotland women’s football match – in a sport that has until recently been overlooked by traditional media outlets – peaked at 6 million viewers on BBC One, with many more watching on online streams, which are not included in the official TV ratings.

Live English cricket largely vanished from free-to-fair television screens in the mid-2000s, when high-profile test matches could attract peak audiences of more than 8 million viewers.

Legal restrictions mean that public broadcasters can still show highlights packages. However, Channel 4, which has the rights to show Cricket World Cup highlights on free-to-air, have been showing the programme late at night, with some programmes starting after midnight and struggling to attract more than 500,000 viewers.

The BBC is attempting to revive interest in cricket among the wider public by screening a new competition called the Hundred from next summer. But until then cricket administrators may need to look to women’s football for inspiration.

England, you suck as a venue. I'm astonished anybody with half a brain cell agreed to hold a world cup here this time of year. The tournament is already at a high risk of being askew due to weather impact
