I think Allen needs to go on and turn him self into a genuine KPF in years to come. I love him and see heaps of upside but to me him ending up as a decent third tall won't do it for me.

Oscar could be another Bontempelli. Similar height and skill set. The real question is whether we should have picked Brander before Oscar. Brander will be an outstanding player one day...Kelly is one now...Oscar is on his way...

O Allen for a simple reason: structure.

Our typical team:
Mcgovern
Barrass
Sheppard
Hurn
Jetta
Duggan
Cole/Nelson for last defender spot

We always play 7 defenders

Kennedy
Darling
Cripps
Ryan
Rioli
OAllen
Petruccelle/Cameron

We always play 7 forwards

That leaves 8 for the mid. The dream setup would be Nic Nat + 7 midfielders.

Shuey
Yeo
Sheed
Gaff
Kelly/Conigilio - (future dream) even without them this could be a spot for a tall winger like Brander, M Allen etc.
Redden
Hutchings

We don't want to play a second dedicated ruck because which midfielder do we drop? In the end one Pet or Cameron ends up going to make room and we lose a lot of run and goal kicking power. But Nic Nat has never been a full game ruck. So what do we do?

This is where Oscar/Bailey Smith and Vardy come in. If we can get a ruck chop out who can go forward and kick goals as a 3rd tall it structually frees up a extra selection spot.

In hindsight us picking Oscar was a masterstroke given that Kelly will be in the wings next year anyway. Its a shame Kardinia were such wayne-kerrs about things last year though, the addition of Kelly into our team now would pretty much have us swapping ladder positions with them.

If we picked Kelly last year and won the flag we'd all be happy but we won the flag anyway, as someone else points out if Kelly plays in the GF it's a different game and maybe we don't win. I'm happy how things have panned out, in a perfect world we have Kelly and a flag but in a perfect world I'm writing this from a Caribbean beach side mansion. Be thankful for what we got I say.

Pretty easy choice for me.

Kelly = likely 2019 Brownlow plus all other awards

Kelly might be the difference for the 2019 Premiership

Oscar goes alright though

Allen for sure. He's gonna be our future captain. Got a feeling he'll end up playing as a forward/midfielder long term. We might be able to put together a solid package for Kelly anyway. Maybe Brander and our 2019 pick. Or our 2019 & 2020 first rounders. Both picks should be in the mid teens so not a massive loss

Doubt we move Brander on.

Why'd we take Brander with our first? He's behind a fair few. How many years will he take to develop?

Has he shown much at WAFL level?
He's a very classy player, you can tell that he's going to be good.
For some reason though we're not playing him as a KPF much, and he doesn't seem to play like a KPF either...so who knows how he'll end up. I'd almost say he plays more like a wing.

Don't mind if it takes a few years to both develop him and work out where best to play him.
We took our time developing McGovern and working out his best position and I am pretty happy with the end result.

General rule of thumb is that tall's take 4-5 years to develop and learn their craft at AFL level.
He is not even half way through that process.

Side Note : Very few tall's have the tank that he has, its right up there in the Nick Riewoldt category.

It is similar arguement of Nic Nat vs D. Rich in the 2008 draft.
Good tall is hard to find while there are more supply for good midfielders. I actually expected WCE to draft O Allen with their 2017 first pick. Obviously, WCE did a good job in picking him with the 2nd pick. Two good KPP in 2017 for the next 10 years !
Same applies to 2019, if Luke Jackson is available with our first pick, we should take him.

One is a few years older and has matured at AFL level quicker.

The other is developing into a very, very good footballer.

Don't think we can bash ourselves up over this one.

If Allen is a soft taco and TK the hard then a balanced diet is a taco in both hands.

We will have both, so inhale the tacos' and exhale the negatively. It's tacos all round next year!

Qualifier: If TK goes to Freo, hard taco's are shite!
