Time to talk the "R" word yet?

The term rebuild is something Vic Clubs like Carlton sell their fans so they keep paying membership despite complete incompetence.

We have a draft and rookie draft every year, we have free agency every year.

You can turn your list over pretty quickly if your management was that awful to start with.

That being said, we have a cracking opportunity thanks to Carlton to get a bloody good player this year....No pressure recruitment team.

3 weeks ago he’s quoted saying that he wants to stay. I think that our club is working up an offer

On the contrary, I highly doubt we are interested unless Greenwood takes unders to stay.

28 and not best 22 isn't exactly the type that gets recontracted with much money going to him. My guess is we'll lowball hard, like Lyons, and if he goes, so be it.

yep
Hunter is better Forward and ruck than Strachan though

It's not as much a case of who is better now, but who is better in the long term. There is more upside with Strachan.

Not best 22? You do know with the exception of the first 4 weeks this year due to not having a preseason Hugh has not missed a game since his debut.

So I guess 47 straight games when fit is now considered not best 22?

Uh-huh, then he got dropped (just before the bye, though may have came in for an injury) as we preferred CEY instead...

He's definitely in the gun for the axe this week as well.

Still, 47 games straight, over 3 seasons. Thats best 22 even if he was close to getting dropped 1 time.

Also, he's not getting dropped this week. Take that too the bank!

When that rebuild does eventually come it's going to be big, it's going to be long and it's going to be painful. We really have limited proven talent in the 26's and under group which is what you would expect for a club who has been around the mark for 4-5 years.

Agree on Huey - the guy has massive X-factor, aggression at the coal face and is pretty good in front of goal as well. Due to his size, he can be both a defensive and attacking player as the situation warrants.

Are we realistically going to get good currency from him in a trade apart from some jobber and a second-third round draft pick? Don't think so.

Proven and better than average:

-Milera (still to early but we like what we see)
-B Crouch (gun midfielder)
-M Crouch (gun midfielder)
-Doedee (gun 3rd tall defender)
-O'Brien (still to early but we like what we see)

What we need (they may already be on our list):

-1 gun tall forward
-2 other tall forwards ( I have my doubts with Himmelberg but hopefully FOG can fill one of these spots)
-1 gun small forward
-2 quality midfielders
-1 gun rebounding half back flanker ( Milera?)
-1 gun small defender
-1 gun tall defender capable of matching it with the monster tall forwards - Talia, Davis, Rutten
-1 tall defender ( I like what I have seen of Butts)

More guns the better but this at least what we need.

hmmm, yep, we did got closer this time though. Who knows what will happen when our next window opens in 2025.
Not an attack on you mate, but I am so sick of hearing about the fricken window.

The Dogs weren't even in the hallway most of 2016, let alone in the Window.
Richmond re-invented their forward line in the tail end of the year due to injury, and almost accidentally found a winning formula in 2017.
Last year both grand finalists were 8th and 13th the season prior and not even tipped to make the 8 (and one was a bee's dick from firing their coach the preseason beforehand).
And this season Geelong was frequently tipped to fall off the cliff, and now sit 2 games and 26% percentage clear after week 15.

I think we can safely throw the concept of 'the window' out the bloody window!

Where did you hear that?
Not sure I should say who on here, but this person would know and has no reason to make it up. For what's it's worth they've also said he doesn't want to leave Port and if they even come close to matching our offer he'll stay.

I disagree, yes there is a cliff coming and the management of it will determine our fate. But as noted our drafting has been ok (its about playing them that is the issue)

Define long and painful? Not making the 8? We are specialists at that . Not winning a flag is another matter

I think Ports list is the better in the speed of a flag ( at the moment)

I think we're not heading for a cliff.

A club's list is heading for a cliff if their best 22 have a very large proportion of veteran players about to retire at the same time and the club has not managed to bring in and developed youth in a timely manner.

I think we're not in that position.

That's the whole point of a rebuild.

Tbh I wouldn't say no to a large clean out. The club does a lot right with player development and talent scouting, but we always lack the higher end guys with skills and composure.
That’s because we haven’t had the choice of top 5 picks for yonks. And blokes above top 10 usually have deficiencies they need to work on for most of their careers, if ever they can fix it.

Having said that, we did a remarkable job back in 2017 with the list and picks we had. Also Geelong this year have shown you don’t need drastic changes to do well the following year. Smart recruiting and picking the right youngsters to play is probably the better way to go.

Referring to Geelong, all they did differently this year was added 2 genuinely gun youngsters:
- Clark (nice pace, composed, good skills, run and carry player)
- Miers (composed, elite goal sense)

Hopefully Jone, Ned, Fog or a few can stand up next year. Then the valuable Carlton’s first round pick will be hopefully the boost juice that can complete an immediate “rebuild”. Maybe the word more appropriate is “reinvigorate”?

Dahlhaus. Senior player who can still play. We played Douglas.
