Lol - you discount points, then try to make out all firsts and seconds are the same!!

You should like a Carlton supporter, trying to make out the pick swap this year is a win for them.

We swapped pick ten for Gibbs, plus a number of pick upgrades. The main one - pick 16 for 19 - seems like a win for us, if anything.
Agree, I am not sure why it's so had for some to comprehend this. Carlton finishing last made those picks cancel each over out (and actually in our favour if you compare the quality of the 2017 and 2018 drafts).

No, it end up being a good trade because Carlton finished last, pick 10 in a weak draft and a 3rd rounder is unders for Gibbs.
Wha

It's not the quality of the drafts mate, it's the quality of the player you select with your pick.

The quality of the draft gives you better chance of picking good players who are in a strong draft compared to other weaker draft with the same pick number, i.e. you would want the top 5 pick last year compared to other years, big time. I am just analysing them as picks, and of course more importantly, it depends on how strong a club is at developing players.

I actually believe the haircut Bryce had, is what changed his game. He hasn't been the same. Bring back the top knot.
Hypothesis:

This isn’t the real Bryce Gibbs. The “haircut” was a carefully planned switcharoo.

The real Bryce Gibbs is living under a different name so the bikies don’t find him.

The club needs to have a serious chat with him and what his origin of the form dip. If it’s due to an overload of stress then definitely should be given time off. If he actually prefers to play then go back to SANFL until issues are sorted.

I think the club seems unsure what to do, but doing this yo-yo-ing selection with Gibbs seems to be making him more confused rather than helping him out!
John I think that senior people at the club will have had more than one serious chat with Bryce about his form, and whatever is going on in his life.

Many posters on here always assume the club is a bunch of numpties with no idea and they know better.

I didn’t think you were one of them.

They’d know far, far more about whatever is going on with Bryce than anyone posting here. No disrespect, that’s me included.

If you play Don Pyke's last press conference backwards, I swear he says "Bryce is dead".

The quality of the draft dictates the value of the pick. That's obvious.

Let me be very clear with this response - I have never said and will never claim I know more than the club itself.

I only throw up ideas and opinions and doing so with good intentions for the club. Sometimes it may seem like a brushing comment “a serious chat with Gibbs”, where it really means “as many serious chats it needs to take to get him right”. I see him as a best 22 and I want all our best 22 to fire up if we are going to be a serious threat this year. If we are chopping and changing like we’re seeing with Gibbs, then September is likely going to be a futile month of footy.

He was never a particularly intense player. I don't know what we thought we were going to get considering his age.

True, but his tackle numbers have dropped and so have his contested possession numbers.

But it's not just that. He's missed the easiest shots on goal when he's normally a brilliant finisher on the run, his kicking has been crap, his work rate has been even worse, and we've barely seen those (borderline) elite skills he's known for, and we saw at times in 2018. Even playing at HB, which he has done very well in the past, he looked absolutely lost. Wasn't intercepting anything, wasn't setting up the play or providing any drive.

He's just not up to it full stop. Should go away for the rest of the year, take a mental health break, get his stuff sorted and come back cherry ripe for 2020 PS. Given he's a durable player that relies on his high IQ and good skills rather than athleticism, he can definitely continue to play a roll in our side despite his age imo.

Do we need to review what benefit Bryce gives our list. This may be radical but can we review him at the end of the season and if we see no upside, ask him to retire or just cut him. We will need to pay him out but at least it will give us an additional place on the list.

Potentially, it may be an option but I think retirement is a little early provided he can get his head straight.

Don’t forget that while we have 1/2 and 19/20, we have another 2nd and that’s about it. So unless we trade, we don’t have a stack of picks to use to fill spots. Having him in that 20-25 bracket player that can play anywhere from HB to HF may be very handy.

There is also the option to trade "proven" players we don't see as being part of the future for draft picks...

Yes, because we never swapped 2nd rounders with Melbourne where we finished last and they finish middle, and also gave them our 3rd rounder.

We actually gave Melbourne our 2nd rounder in the Lever trade.

As for comparing the two, the numbers suggest that we paid far more for Gibbs that we received for Lever.

Regardless of the mental gymnastics that people want to try and play with the Gibbs trade, the reality is that we got screwed and paid massive overs.

Gibbs + Pick 24 (2018) and 44 (2018) for 10, 16 and 33 (2018)
Lever + Pick 37 (2017) and 47 (2018) for 10 and 19

(P10+P16+P33)-(P24-P44) = 1878 points paid for Gibbs
(P10+P19)-(P37-P47) = 1544 points received for Lever

1878 = the equivalent of Pick 5 paid for Gibbs
1544 = the equivalent of Pick 8 received for Lever

It was pick 21 that they gave us, the bid picks pushed it out to pick 24 and actually that's around where I "initially" value Gibbs around pick 6/7 (in a weak draft with Neal was worth pick 6 in a strong draft) but don't forget that's not taking into account the difference in quality between the 2017 and 2018 draft.

And that's where Reid was very smart as he thought their 2nd rounder in 2018 will closely cancel out our pick 16 in 2017 and took a calculated risk that Carlton will finish low, he did get very lucky that Carlton end up finishing last and there were only 2 FA compensations picks that affected this pick.

And Melbourne finishing a lot higher in 2018 than most expected really stuffed us up there......
