My old GP was from the Ukraine, his office was full of military collectibles and USSR stuff. His son worked on nuclear submarines back in Russia.

I wish he didn't take early retirement now so I could ask him about it.

I had an old specialist who was from Hungary and told me that that he had an interesting school visit in 1953 as part of a ra ra Soviet agitprop program.

Vasily Zaitsev.

You might know that name - the Russian sniper in the film Enemy at the Gates.

When you went to see him, did he describe your condition as “not great, not terrible” or “you’ll be fine, I’ve seen worse?”

Or walk in naked saying its 50 degrees down there

It was bad enough when he wanted to do a rectal examination. Soon as the KY came out and he put some on his gigantic hairy russian finger I was like, no way Jose, that's only gonna make things worse.

I ended up being sent to hospital and put under.

Only just finished the series earlier this week and absolutely loved it. It’s such a heavy story, but they really approached it with the sensitivity and seriousness that it required. I particularly liked how they structured the overall story arc to retain a sense of mystery over what actually happened to cause the explosion – it felt like they were trying to keep us in the dark much the same way the Soviet government did at the time both with their own people and with the rest of the world.

Although I made comment of it during one of the episodes to my wife, I didn’t find the English accents distracting at all. The combination of that and the written Russian made it easier for me to understand the nuances of the power dynamics at play, especially considering it was such a hierarchical societal structure that is completely different to what we have here.

The casting, writing, acting, cinematography, pretty much everything was quite brilliant. It took a few people to recommend it to actually get me to put it on, but I’ve already recommended it to 5 other people!

One thing it has really made me think about (and I mention it at risk of re-opening an unnecessary rabbit warren of debate) is my opinion about nuclear power. While I’m all for moving away from fossil fuels, the impact of nuclear disaster is so devastating, I’m not sure the risk is really worth it.

Assume you mean the violence and murder and getting throw out of helicopters. People still pay the price if they make their superiors at work look inferior.

But in general our attitude towards figures of authority is very different to the Soviet Union. It might just be fear rather than an actual attitude though.

I spoke with a person recently who has/had no idea what Chernobyl is, or about, or location of, or history of. He's in his 40s. But not a former Soviet.

That's incredible, the amount of publicity the event has/continues to get makes it nearly impossible to be unaware it, especially in your 40s.

I could understand a young millenial punk not having any idea about it although plenty of them are hardocre lefties and often (wrongly) cite Chernobyl in anti nuclear arguments.

In my lifetime it’s got less

You would never ever argue with a Police Officer in the 1970s for example

Interesting article and study it refers to...

Wouldn’t be the same without a quote from Thomas, nuclear industry propagandist.

Those crazy Ukrainians spend $4bill on a dome to encase the reactor when it’s all so harmless.

Did laugh at the waste of time and effort that went into getting the West German robot that was never going to work because the West Germans were working with the propaganda radiation number that the Soviets gave them instead of the real number. At some point you'd think someone would realise that there's no point even bothering if they're not going to tell anyone the real radiation levels, but no, they see it through and end up with an inevitable dead robot on the roof. Seemed to sum up much about the Soviet system

In all seriousness, good.

It used to be off the beaten track, only for those genuinely interested in it. Now it will become a tourist hotspot.

How am I supposed to get to the woodpecker now?
