That’s a statement. Unbelievable. The Essendon fan base is enormous. I doubt there’s been a bigger 10 v 12 interstate match at the MCG. I might be wrong.

Sydney’s biggest crowds at the mcg during the home and away season

Hawthorn v Sydney round 18 2014 72,768
Essendon v Sydney round 21 1996 69,237
Collingwood v Sydney round 9 2013 65,306
Collingwood v Sydney round 21 2007 63,842
Hawthorn v Sydney round 8 2015 63,319
Essendon v Sydney round 11 1998 62,866
Hawthorn v Sydney round 9 2016 61,552
Essendon v Sydney round 16 2019 60,199

Even tho these crowds are mighty impressive Sydney are like a small Victorian club that will draw 10-15,000 of their own fans to the mcg

Still a massive crowd for two average sides. Don’t think Richmond ever drew that against Sydney.

No Richmond have never drawn over 60,000 v any interstate side. Only Collingwood, Essendon and hawthorn are the only Victorian clubs to draw over 60,000 v interstate clubs. Essendon have done this 3 times all against the swans. Hawthorn have done is 4 times all against the swans and Collingwood have done this 5 times 2 times against the swans, twice against the eagles and once against Brisbane

All of those crowds, however, were between teams entrenched in the top 8 - not 10 v 12 in the latter half of the season. I'm not sure a 12th placed Sydney draw as many in Melbourne as one in premiership contention...

In fact, are there many examples of 60k being drawn between two teams outside the 8 after the bye (not including games between the big 4)? Essendon don't play smaller teams at the MCG anymore. Richmond and Carlton probably not. Collingwood might have?

In fact the swans probably have more Melbourne support then north and the dogs. Certainly many more 60,000 plus attendances in recent seasons.

Package that with the NSW fan base and the Swans reach is massive

That said 60,000 plus for a 12th v 14th match in the middle of winter is a truely gigantic roll up

Exactly and I’m sure in some games like the 72,000 v hawthorn in 2014 1st v 2nd the swans could of had upto 20,000 swans fans

Hmm maybe north not sure about the bulldogs tho. But in terms of away team support in Melbourne Sydney draw more people then north, bulldogs and saints and probably on par with Melbourne.

Swans are very lucky to have a hard core 15,000 fan base in Melbourne
