Coach Fremantle: where to now after Lyon?

How does Lyon continue to keep his job?

I just don't understand.

Lyon is the very embodiment of a football scavenger. He comes in and takes on a team that were going to be on the verge of a finals tilt anyway. He did it with St Kilda when they sacked the coach before him, and underachieved with a team approaching it's prime. He did it again with Freo.

But he is not a long-term coach. He is no Alistair, who has built a team from nothing and taken that team to multiple premierships despite having it's list pretty much overturned during a long period of time between drinks.

Not to mention that his style of play is SO OUTDATED by now. He still thinks we're in 2010.

He is football's DJ KHALED. He acts like he does something, but really does nothing. He can pick a good beat that someone else made and occasionally have a hit, but most of the time his stuff is frustrating to watch and none of his hits are actually good enough to be considered history's best.

The same inability to turn full field dominance in to scores plagues him now as it always has. Expect players like McGovern and Lake have in the past to continue to gobble up our inside 50s.
Posts of this standard while judging a coach winning 20-2 as playing dumb football. The mind boggles.
Lo and behold Gav, it came to pass. We had more inside 50s than the Eagles, lost by 91 points regardless, and the man adjudged best on ground was a half back who gobbled up all our poor entries.

Ross Lyon coaches dumb footy. Always has. You have backed a dud.

What a load of horseshit. He was literally the bounce of a ball away from being a premiership coach for a side that has 1 in its entire history. His StKilda team also was a kick off the ground by Scarlett away from challenging one of the greatest teams ever

He then took a team to a GF that has never been to one before and was beaten by another of the greatest sides ever.

Only an idiot could dismiss his coaching CV

You know DJ Khaled is actually a DJ and those beats are his. Like you understand that don't you?

Yeah you can't argue he's achieved, but I think his time is up.

The score in the 2009 GF was 80-68

The Saints lost by 12 points in a low scoring game. So they lost comfortably.

How can you win a GF when you only score 68??? This is his problem and always has been. He wants to win 68-67. He wants the 2005 Swans Grand Final score. He is 15 years out of date.

So no - the 'bounce of the ball' thing is a complete myth and simply factually incorrect.

The bounce of the ball was the drawn grand final you ******* peanut.

At no time in history nor in the future is a 2 goal loss a comfortable loss.

Ross Lyon is the biggest fraud in the AFL.

If Freo are smart they should pray and hope he walks to Carlton or North.

Would be ropable if we 'poach' Ross Lyon with a big contract...the game has passed him by.

Since taking Freo to a Grand Final has done * all...isn't up to it and i don't like his style.

After losing Neale last year, possibly the Hill brothers and Langdon this year and the likely retirement of Mundy, Freo will barely have a midfield and will find things difficult.

Yeah hasn't done a thing since coaching 3 grand final sided and 2 minor premiers. What a hack
Last thing Carlton need is a coach who gets results

Also from memory Max Rooke kicked one after siren in the 09 GF and no one bothered to man the goal line cos what was the point.

He'll get a lot of stick this week but as you say he has been basically two kicks away from two flags.

Exactly mate, you could basically say luck cost him 2 flags with the saints and then he is forever remembered as a great coach. Yes winning flags is all the matters but it's ridicolous how a good season is completely dismissed in Australia.

How about recently? This Freo team has underperformed for years now and Lyon has made some questionable decisions.

Just because he had some success previously doesn't mean he's still a good coach.

Recently he was turning over an aged GF list. His questionable decisions are trading for players I presume? Why would you smash a bloke for giving players a chance? Sydney Stack has been a revelation but just because he's working out doesn't make him less of a risk at the time Richmond selected him.

I agree with you that Lyon deserves credit for taking 2 historically s**t teams to Grand Finals. The results speak for themselves.

But some scrutiny should be coming his way right now given RECENT results and the question is has the game passed him by?

A few years ago he brought in guys like Guerra and Hale from Hawthorn and attempted to 'modernise' Freo's gameplan. His defensive game plan wasn't cutting it anymore and he knew it. Doesn't help his style that the AFL make rule changes to speed the game up.

However since then, they have finished 16th, 14th & 14th.

They looked good at the start of this year, won some tight games, but the wheels have fallen off. Losing a gun mid like Neale in his age bracket should probably warrant more scrutiny...he didn't even move back to his home state. If they lose Brad Hill & Langdon this year, plus the retirement of Mundy, Freo's midfield will be Fyfe and kids which looks bleak for 2020.

A few questionable decisions (outside his inappropriate sexual comment incident) is rushing injured players back into the team too early where they perform poorly and handing Bennell another contract this year. He also doesn't seem to make any effective changes to adapt in-game.
