Review Round 16 vs Adelaide - The Showdown Win!

Watching the replay - have to say Dougal Howard has a surprising bit of mongrel about him šŸ‘

He's shown a bit of mongrel in the sanfl. He, Austin and Frampton showed quite a bit in their first year. Was awesome to watch. When one of them got in a tussle the other two joined in. So Howard has had it in him and probably we'll see more of it as he begins to believe more and more that he belongs in the afl. I just hope that when he shows more of it that he doesn't get that inspiring talk from the same guy that spoke to Butters.

What are you using there ..? A Huawei phone? Lol

Digital SLR. I would love it if I could use my bigger, faster lens, but AFL policy doesn't permit it.

Well I wouldnt say Ken is close to coaching at the top of his game.

Has anyone stopped to think this IS Ken coaching at the top of his game?

A slightly better than 50% W/L ratio, may actually be the best he is actually capable of.

Hence he would be at the top of HIS game.

Ken oozes mediocrity, and that may mean that there just isn't scope in his skill set for any improvement past this point.

I'm all for sacking Ken, however I still accept we are a reasonably well coached outfit. The problem isn't that we aren't coached alright, it's that the coach is mediocre, and we deserve to find the best and not stick with the no hopers, as is our creed.

Crows have dominated A QUARTER; not a half. Q2 was equal.

Q1 3.1:19 - 2.7:19 (4-9).... I50 12 v 17
Q2 3.1:19 - 2.4:16 (4-6).... I50 13 v 13
Q3 6.3:39 - 1.1:7 (9-2)...... I50 18 v 5
Q4 3.6:24 - 0.2:2 (9-2)...... I50 23 v 7

H1 6.2:38 - 4.11:35 (8-15)
H2 9.9:63 - 1.3:9 (18-4)

FT 15.11:101 - 5.14:44 (26-19)

I have inserted inside 50's into your post to compare how much we dominated but also wasted opportunities in the last quarter in particular.

Champion Data tables.

As expected plenty of green for us and red for the crows.

our Xscore 98 was less than the actual score of 101 only the 3rd time this season that has occured, other two games were Carlton 87 v 88 and Saints in china 124 v 139. Freo game was 79 pts for both.

Lycett got 8 hit out to advantages out of his 32 hit outs, Obrien got 4 of 27, but the backs Dougal, Charlie and the Hoff, managed 4 from their 10, compare to Jerker Jenkins 1 out of 4.

The free kick count was 0-8 at quarter time, so once we dominated we started getting some from the umps but 13-8 for the next 3 quarters isn't many decisions made in such a shades of grey 50/50 game like footy.

Our highest I50 per score was actually in Q2, wasn't it? In the last quarter, we have had our worst I50/points ratio.

i50/score - i50/points
Q1 3.000 - 0.632
Q2 3.250 - 0.684
Q3 2.000 - 0.462
Q4 2.556 - 0.958

If you're keeping track (as I suspect you may be), Westhoff would be credited with at least one hit out to advantage. Had one in the centre square, second or third quarter. Noticeable given it may have been his first in the centre square!

This win is only the 3rd time we have beaten the crows by 50+ points.

Below is the breakdown of margins The first 4 margins are how AFL Tables report margins, I haven't used their 36-53 pts and 54-71 pts margins, as I adjusted those into 3 margins. We tend to win more of the close ones and medium sized margins and they tend to win the big margin games.

When both sides win by 50+ pts they have had a good year. The omen is looking good for this year.

Port's biggest margin
65 pts R3 2001 finish 3rd, but 5th after finals
57 pts Rd 16 2019
54 pts Rd 2 2014 finish 5th, but 3rd after finals

Crows biggest margins
84 pts Rd 20 2017 - 1st and lose GF
83 pts 2005 Semi Final - were minor premiers, lost home QF, won this, then lost PF in Perth
74 pts Rd 19 1998 - 5th, but end up Premiers
70 Pts Rd 17 2009 - finish 5th and then 5th after finals
68 Pts Rd 3 2005 - minor premiers then as above
58 Pts Rd 2 2012 - 2nd lost home QF, won SF, lost PF to Hawks finish 3rd
58 Pts Rd 2 2016 - 5th, won EF lost SF finish 6th
50 Pts Rd 2 2006 - 2nd won QF, lost PF finish 3rd, as 4th placed Syd made GF

Playing him along the wing the whole game. Master stroke lol.
Surely with the talent on our list Westy can stay settled in a position now rather than being Mr Fixit.

He's shown a bit of mongrel in the sanfl. He, Austin and Frampton showed quite a bit in their first year.

I remember seeing him go hard after Butch in an SANFL game when Butch was playing for Centrals. Was genuinely torn as to who I wanted to see win the scuffles.

He's been reported a couple of times now. Doesn't mind handing out a bit of wild west justice. ;)

Butters running to goal while being chased by 4 Crows reminds me of this.. can Alex do something with this?

You would have to slow the snakes right down so it looked like they were just admiring the iguana's speed and skill. ;)

Our highest I50 per score was actually in Q2, wasn't it? In the last quarter, we have had our worst I50/points ratio.

i50/score - i50/points
Q1 3.000 - 0.632
Q2 3.250 - 0.684
Q3 2.000 - 0.462
Q4 2.556 - 0.958
I look at it the other way round and use I50 as the denominator, because its the driver of scores.

scores/I50 ---- Pts/I50
4/12 = 33.3% 19/12 = 1.58 pts
4/13 = 30.8% 19/13 = 1.46 pts
9/18 = 50.0% 39/18 = 2.17 pts
9/23 = 39.1% 24/23 = 1.04 pts

So in Q3 we converted most of our I50's into scores and into the most points. Q2 was our worst conversion into scores but Q4 was the worst points scored for those I50's.

We average 60 I50's per game. If we could average 2.0 pts per I50 we would average kicking 120 pts which would make us the top side.

I have manipulated the data from this website page.

For 66 inside 50's we kicked against Adelaide
Ave goals 22% x 66 = 14.5 goals, Average behinds 20% x 66 = 13.2 pts = 100 pts
Best goals 27% x 66 = 17.8 goals, behinds 20% x 66 = 13.2 pts = 120 pts

Against the crows 15 goals/66 I 50 = 22.7%, score conversion 15+11/66 = 39.4%. We were better than our average, we were around AFL average but we were worse than the top 5 sides average.

It is no fluke that the top 5 sides have kicked the most goals, have the best I50 goal conversion and score conversion percentages, despite their different levels of I50's.
