Data from footywire. To check the draft order (updated weekly) see the thread here.

This is a Suns-specific version of the player contracts & statistics spreadsheet pinned to the top of this forum. It summarises your players' contract situations, experience, ages and heights. The data is from footywire, and the spreadsheet will update itself when footywire is updated. It may contain some errors, I do not have the ability to update them so we just have to deal with what footywire gives us. It's the best we can do for the moment.

According to this data, Gold Coast are:
- 8th tallest, averaging 188.3cm
- 14th heaviest, averaging 85.6kg
- 2nd youngest with an average age of 23.4 years
- The least experienced, averaging 54.7 career games

Your picks in the first five rounds of the 2019 national draft are:
1st round pick (tied to Gold Coast - currently pick 1)
1st round pick (tied to Brisbane Lions - currently pick 14)
3rd round pick (tied to Richmond - currently pick 48)
5th round pick (tied to Gold Coast - currently pick 73)
5th round pick (tied to West Coast - currently pick 88)

To check the draft order (updated weekly) see the thread here.

Who retires, who is traded, and who is re-signed?

What do you see as the gaps in the list? How could those gaps be filled? Via trade or from the draft?

What will it take to get it all done, given the current trade and draft value on hand?

The Suns have apparently asked for pick 1 as a priority pick, though whether or not they get it is hard to tell (thread about that is in the drafts sub-board).

Relatively new coach, second youngest and the least experienced list, decently tall but still need to fill out. Surely the greatest need is time?

Surely Tom Nicholls wants to leave by now. Will Brodie will probably go to Essendon after a couple years of alleged interest.

This year they will lose Martin no question and 2m pete not far behind but more scary is the fact all last year's crop come out of contract in 2020 😬

The club should be looking at the recent uplift at Brisbane and try to model their short term plans on theirs. Just look at the difference Hodge has made to their side.

Give them extra room outside the salary cap to give big contracts to veterans interesting in joining them for a couple years. Provide some additional on-field guidance, experience and competitiveness. You could limit it to players with 10+ years / 150+ games experience.

Helps them recruit guys like Matt Suckling, David Mundy, Harry Taylor, Grant Birchall, Nathan Jones, Justin Westhoff, David Armitage, Kieran Jack or Chris Masten. All those guys are out of contract, 30+ and still look to have another year or two to contribute

Alternatively, they could be given the additional cap space to spend on administrative staff. Allow them the additional funds to attract some decent, experienced assistant coaches to work under Dew and back him in.

Any of these approaches would work substantially better than compromising yet another draft and having young guns inevitably leave because the club isn't improving. Early picks won't fix anything here

Yuck....they will have picks 1,14, 12 Martin trade .. 24 odd Brodie..
they don't need washed up plus 30s they need to draft better.. early days but last year crop look years away from making a meaningful impact.

Who are the leaders within the club? And what have all this youth done so far? The Suns probably have more 1st round picks on their list than any other club, so what exactly would another first rounder do for them?

Would you call Hodge washed up? The veterans I listed are, for the most part, more than capable of playing at the top level another few years. Besides, the point isn't to just add more players to their list, it's to add LEADERS to their list. With May and Lynch abandoning ship, they really have next to nothing in terms of veterans. Can't expect your club to be led by a bunch of 23 year olds, or else you end up like Melbourne has been the last 10-15 years - in endless rebuild mode that they are hopefully finally coming out of now

Huh they have a ex acting captain in the 2nds already and let Barlow and may go.

They took the long term view in king, Luko and co add to that they lost there full back in pre season

They have had one blow out all year in a poor team they are doing alright. Add Anderson,Flanders de kong to that list they are set for the long term

Are you sure they're set for long term?
I'm sure similar was said of Rankine, King and Lukosius last year. Might have felt similar with Powell and Ballard the year before. Or Ainsworth, Scrimshaw, Brodie and Bowes the year before that.

A team can't endlessly draft youth, see no improvement, yet expect it will suddenly get better taking the exact same approach. Brisbane added Hodge not just to play, but to lead their youth in the right direction. Now look where they are

Then that is just one of the many arguments against a priority pick right there..as atm they get either anderson or rowell

Might be the most intelligent post on big footy for a long time.

I am in favour of this kind of assistance over more draft picks, young kids aren't our problem, I am actually really disappointed in the club to go and just ask for more draft picks, come up with something a bit more creative.

Would kill for a Mundy or Nathan Jones to add to our midfield to help the likes of Swallow (who is having a career best season), Miles, Fiorini and McPherson in there who are almost playing lone hands, our midfield doesn't bat nearly deep enough.

I honestly don't think our season has been as bad as it seems though. The young kids are getting tired come the end of the season, may sneak another win or 2 by seasons end.

Could easily have 6 wins already with 1 point losses to St Kilda and Melbourne and a 4 point loss to St Kilda. As well as competitive performances against WC and Geelong.

This year they will lose Martin no question and 2m pete not far behind but more scary is the fact all last year's crop come out of contract in 2020 😬
Wright re-signed this year.

As far as people who will go...

- Martin will probably leave, uncontracted as well.
- Brodie still contracted for another year, may leave.
- Day is a RFA.
- Ah Chee uncontracted.
- Then a bunch of rookies like Nutting, Scheer, Heron and Leslie all probably come out as well.
- Rischitelli Retires and Harbrow might also retire, but I think plays on one more year.

They all won't leave.

Incomings:
- Stephen Hill is linked but I don't think he comes in.

Not much other news at the moment for incomings, but this will obviously change as we get to the trade period.

Didn't 2MP sign a contract extension this year? Sexton was a FA but signed an extension, was good news for the Suns.

Suns should target Josh Kennedy from the Swans and Luke Breust from the Hawks. Two experienced players who come from arguably the best clubs of the past decade, they are both super professional and would be terrific leaders for the Suns younger players. They can both play at a high standard as well. Offer both 4 year deals on big coin. The AFL should step in and help them lure these guys. If they were able to add a couple of quality veterans then I wouldn't be against them getting a PP as well to really help them turn their list around. Without some added veterans, however, a PP would be relatively pointless because it'd just be another youngster without proper support/guidance.

The AFL should give GC 2 extra player spots on their list and increase their cap for a 5 year period.
The fact that they already get first dibs on half of Qld talent, have a heap of first round talent and are inline for pick 1 again this year means they should get any extra draft perks.
Brisbane showed the way to do it, and they did it with one end of first round draft pick as a concession, but they have a good coach, good footy people around them and brought in some good older players to help out.
The fact they gave away Lyons for nothing while contracted is a sign of poor management.

The poor management came before when he was brought in on pretty damn high coin and we needed to clear his salary off the books unfortunately.

Think the AFL should give players a contract kicker to move up, those players that GCS have identified as players they want if they move up get an extra 250k a year on their contract that doesnt count against TPP..
They already have the ability to have a player as an ambassador and part of their payment is outside the cap.

What they need is like a Harry Taylor and Lachie Henderson to both go up that sorts the defence out, Jones, JPK and Stevens would sort the mids out, not sure about forwards probably they could fill that area but in nut shell need 4-5 senior blokes that not only can play but teach....

Our KPD is fine, just hurts that Rory Thompson did his ACL before the season and Sam Collins hurt his hip. Which means we are playing Hombsch who is really a 3rd tall defender having to play KPD.

Our midfield needs some reinforcements though, no arguments there.
