I was just thinking of the WA team on paper in the last 24 hours and my belief was just re-inforced when I reminded myself Cripps also is from WA.

check this WA team out on paper.

This is off the top of my head so there could be some errors:

Fullback: Stack Rance Naughton

Half Back: Yeo McGovern Sheppard

Centre Line: Omeara Cripps Sheed

Half Forward line: T Kelly Hogan Franklin

Forward line: Walters Kennedy Cripps

Fall: Nick Nat, Coniglio Fyfe

Bench: Darling, Hill, T Mitchell, Swallow.

Emerg. with Naughton coming in at this stage Barrass will have to be an emergency for me, Martin is also an emergency bringing Omeara in, Rich, I will include as an emergency and I will put in Lobb as an emergency for second ruck etc..

This is off the top of my head. I am sure I have missed some and made some errors

could Victoria field a team on paper that could match this team??

Swap Stack for Shepperd

Na, Stack is that good. You make a case for Shepperd though

Stack would/should be AA back pocket for the rest of his career like JR would be a automatic AA forward pocket for most of his career. I might replace Hill with Sheppard.

Stack, probably be forward for most of his career now, and some say go through midfield like in juniors but in a elite matchup against the best ideally he is perfect back pocket looking at the way he rolls

Certainties is a poor choice of words in a game like this.

Both sides would be stacked with talent and could win on their day.

Na, I am promoting discussion an interest, so its a thread marketing ploy.

I think Victoria might struggle in certain areas though despite the talent and depth they could bring in. For example, Fyfe, Cripps, Conilgio, McGovern, Rance, Franklin, Kennedy, Darling, Walters, Stack is especially formidable in my eyes. Some regard Yeo as the best two way runner in the game to atm.

I wouldn't say certainty but for the first time in my memory they look stronger on paper than Victoria.

It has been a while that WA has had the stronger KPP talent but their midfield has been shallow in comparison to the ridiculous depth of talent that Victoria has boasted.

With the twilight/retirement of Ablett, Judd, Mitchell, etc generation and the emergence of Cripps, Kelly, Yeo, Coniglio, etc for WA this is less of an issue and the superior KPP talent has WA looking stronger on paper now.

Was this thread just another excuse to talk about Stack?

Na, I like state of origin concept because I like the best playing against the best to see how they go especially given the diluted teams we have these days over 18 teams.

I am just saying W.A. if the stars align could really trouble Victoria, not even considering other match ups

Certainties?

Lol, I'm glad there may have finally be one state side to challenge the potential Victorian side which would of whiped the floor over the last 15 or so years.

The Victorian side would still contain all of the following in the top 20 of the coaches votes atm:

Gawn
Bontempelli
J.Kelly
Dangerfield
Cunnington
Parker
Ablett
Crouch
Pendlebury
Boak
Taranto
Henderson
Shuey

Then could add from the following pool to fill out the squad:

FWDS:

Cameron
Hawkins (He qualifies under the SOO rules)
Gray
Greene
De Goey
Curnow
Lynch
Membrey
Papley
McDonald
Danniher*

Mids:

Martin
Macrae
Oliver
Treloar
Dunkley
Kennedy
Merrett
Gaff
Shiel
Sloane
Higgins
Selwood
M.Crouch
Rockliff

Def:

Moore
Talia
Tarrant
Blicavs
Sicily
Whitfield
Stewart
Haynes
Lloyd
Daniel
Keath

Rucks:

Marshall
Goldstein
Kruezer

I tend to share that sentiment :thumbsu:

What is interesting is how WA can punch above its weight given the population advantage of Victoria

Point taken, but I think the current WA capacity, assuming Rance back from injury etc., fully fit an firing. would take Victoria on paper which is a rare thing to say in any era.

Victoria usually fields the best team even when beaten by SA or WA but at the moment I think WA would out match them and I am from NSW and in NSW so have no real bias except I like an anomaly.

Victoria always has the depth of talent advantage against any state just through sheer numbers but, especially with the way the game is played these days, some of the guys listed for you for Victoria shine in a role capacity IMO. In the sense some of the Vic players you list are not bullet proof and have weaknesses With WA, you have some real full package all round gun players at the moment like Cripps, Fyfe although his kicking could be better, Yeo, Coniglio etc..

For example having Darling and Swallow on the bench highlights how strong this WA team is!!!

That's very debatable. I think people tend to just favour the fresh opinion in these sorts of things.

WA certainly have star power and an extremely strong spine.

I don't think it's any more star ladden than the Victorian side though.

Dangerfield, Martin, De Goey, Bontempelli & Ablett are probably 5 of the 8 most dynamic players in the league along with NN, Fyfe and Franklin.

It's still packing a midfield of Gawn, Dangerfield, J.Kelly, Bontempelli, Cunnington, Pendlebury, Macrae, Taranto, Gaff, Shiel, Treloar and Crouch.

You could afford to play the likes of Martin, Ablett, Parker and Boak through the half forward line as quality 1vs1 players.

The thing the Victorian side will have over all others is insane depth.

The likes of Sheed, Hill, Martin, Jetta etc are good players, but the Vic side fills these spots with genuine AA's in most positions.

Also don't forget 2018 Norm Smith Medalist and finals specialist Luke Shuey, currently sitting equal fifth if you're going off coaches votes.

It would be great, NRL SoO is amazing. So much passion there. If you don't think WA, SA and VIC could get the same home state parochialism, you're wrong. You only need to look at WA with it's sports teams in AFL, NBL, BBL, etc. They love it, and so do we.

2 things the AFL would need for it to succeed

1. An appropriate time of year so that both players and clubs buy into it.

2. The contest to be genuinely hard fought.

Fan engagement will come, people say they don't care but that's because the AFL players/clubs don't.

If WA was playing VIC (+ other states as example) in a match that actually meant something and players were having a genuine crack and pride in the jumper I would absolutely passionately support the Big V.

Stack Rance Barrass
Rich McGovern Sheppard
B. Hill Cripps Sheed
Walters Darling Franklin
Cameron Kennedy Cripps
Nic Nat Coniglio Fyfe

Yeo, Ryan, T. Kelly, Lobb

Emg. Martin, Hogan, Jetta, O'Meara

But Vic team would be just as impressive.

Actually Rich might get a run, but he is a bit slow. Omeara pre injury for sure but these days I am not sure how competitive he would be. I suppose he would be ahead of Martin. Ryan misses to many goals as a forward for me to include him. Walters is better, Cripps simply more reliable in front and Cameron just has better form over the journey I think.

Lobb is an interesting one, I do not think he has done enough yet in his career to be included. NN would have to carry the load and have a stop gap in there, Maybe put P Cripps in there as second Ruck and bring Yeo in to support Fyfe would be more formidable

To take on that WA side:

B: Stewart Blicavs Tarrant
HB: Whitfield Moore Sicily
C: J.Kelly Cunnington Macrae
HF: Martin Cameron Ablett
FF: Greene Hawkins De Goey
R: Gawn Bontempelli Dangerfield
I/C: Pendlebury, Taranto, Shiel, Shuey

Blicavs plays as the second ruck, Tarrant shifts to FB, Sicily takes Darling and Pendlebury plays across half back.

Alternatively you play Tom Lynch, Joe Danniher, Rowan Marshall, Peter Wright as a 3rd tall forward/ruck rotating with De Goey through mid/half forward etc....

You haven't seen a lot of Aaron Naughton play this year? Leading Contested Marks in the competition. I am sure he would get a gig on the bench at the very least.

I actually thought I'd included him, he definately makes the side. Potentially even over Gaff.

SoO works for the NRL because the NRL competition is so suburban. It would never work in the AFL because (a) the AFL competition is strong (b) SoO would effectively exclude players not from Vic, SA, and WA, (c) AFL Club supporters would not tolerate players from their teams being injured in a SoO competition
