2nds 2019 Lions Reserves and NEAFL thread

How's Ely looking? Not ready yet?
Still a fair bit off I think. Has had an interrupted year which hasn't helped him. I think he'll be a bit slower transition for him than we have normally had in our first draft picks. He was a late call up to the vic country and a bit of a late riser draft wise. I don't think he will debut this season or for a while next year but towards the back end of next year I can see it. Will jsut take a while to adjust to not being the biggest guy out there, but has the explosive traits you want. Think he will benefit on doing a lot of core work this year which will help with his touch.

Rhys looks decidedly unhappy when he does anything exceptionally well (i.e. a couple of fantastic goals) at the NEAFL level compared to his strutting and antics (in a good way) at AFL level, which I guess is fair enough given his high expectations that he belongs at the AFL level.

Brisbane depth has become unbelievable overnight a player like Rhys would be great trade bait for Gold Coast at the moment

I’d keep Matho. At the moment if Neale or Lyons we’re injured he’d be the first one in. I hope/expect at least one of Smith, Starcevich, Joyce, Berry or Bailey (although he seems preferred as an outside mid or back) would go past him as an option for a first string midfielder/ resting forward.

I wonder how much the interrupted pre season has effected McFadyen. Obviously he was drafted very raw and overrated by guys like Knightmare but there hasn’t been the improvement we’ve seen in Joyce, Berry, Answerth, etc.

Maybe. But I have seen glimpses this season which tells me he has some high end talent.

I don't believe the "new" GC are that silly.
I didn't say it would be a high draft pick, or that it'd necessarily be a direct swap. The point is GC need players who are somewhat older and experienced, a bunch of 18 year olds aren't going to help that much, no more than Sam Walsh did. If I were them I'd be going straight for Keays and Josh Walker. Even if they're not world beaters, they're worth a shot.

I would not be in too much of a hurry to move on senior guys who have been stuck in the NEAFL for most of the year.

We have had an unbelievably good run with injury the last 2 years (TOUCH WOOD) and the law of averages says that it simply can not continue year after year.

Players like Josh Walker, Rhys Matheison, Ryan Bastinac, Lewy Taylor, Nick Robertson, Ben Keays and Tom Cutler could be very handy if we suffer a few injuries rather than throwing young guys in their 1st year into the seniors.

I wouldn't be against moving 1 or 2 of them on though but not the bulk of them.

I think we'd need to be very careful trading those mid aged players tbh. We've had one on the best injury lists in recent history so our depth really hasn't been tested. Yes we're not playing some guys we've had to previously, but its more a sign of injury luck than vastly improved depth.

Walker I get, I’d be into him if I were them.

We’d be favourites yeah ?
It's not quite Globetrotters v Generals but it's definitely the same postcode.

[ graphs pushed below fold; do not account for "A. Swallow" being a semi-retired onfield coach rather than a u18 academy player. ]
