What it means for West Coast:

Double chance and set up for a serious crack at back to back flags. Woo hoo!!

It is also a chance to plunge a knife into Collingwoods season and send them outside the top four plus add even more mental anguish on top of all the other scars we have inflicted on them. And who doesn't enjoy watching Eddie McGuire look like he just farted and followed through.

What it means for Collingwood: An opportunity to finally earn some flyby points and play at a world class stadium in front of the most passionate fans in the country.

It is simply unfair that they play at a crusty old sub standard ground in front of a hoard of uneducated half breeds plus hardly ever get out of Victoria and experience a truly modern city and some decent weather.

Key matchups

The whipping boys Masten v Mayne

SO often we look at the guns as important matchups but its the effectiveness of the bottom 3 on each side that can win or lose you games.

Chris Masten, an enigma (just love using that word ENIGMA) of the Eagles team or over 10 years. The most tackled player in the AFL, not fast, not tall, not big and doesn't kick goals. But this man has an appetite for blood and can run and cover space like no other. Over the journey has divided Eagles fans and keeps on doing so.
707149

Chris Mayne, the journeyman who moved from the Purple Flogs to and even more hated team on ridiculous money. After two pretty average seasons he came good last year and Pies fans decided he wasn't as bad as they first thought. Another role player who can surprise.

707153

The supporting talls - Oscar Allen v Mason Cox

The backup ruck forward v the super utility who just knows how to football. One is a natural footballer with a competitive streak that is quickly making him into a best 22 player. The other is a 210cm giant American playing a foreign game in a foreign land.

707157

Oscar does

Team spirit and mojo are seriously under rated. When a side plays together for long enough they become as one. They become not 22 individuals but a single organism moving as one. Some parts are older, some younger, some smaller, some taller and others are just beasts. Not too hard to see the parts in this infamous image that will bring smiles to Eagles fans for eons to come. And frowns and fear to our opposition.

Looks like a decent forecast.

The big query is what will Bucks and the Pies change. They have seen teams such as Port and the Swans beat us with "dirty fast football". Low kicks into the forward line taking away our intercept marking dominance and rebound. The Pies in recent week have been fluffing around playing possession football, taking their time but not getting it inside their forward 50 enough. But do they have the players to change styles? So many outs do they keep things simple? Or with all the outs maybe change is easier!

One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result. Bucks isn't insane so I expect a play on at all costs game plan, run at the Eagles and attack as fast as possible and get the ball inside 50. Expecting the Pies to treat this game as a free hit and to play with licence to run and take risks. It's the only way to beat the cycle and snatch an unlikely away win against a team in form.

The Eagles will simply look to bring their brand and build on recent form. They must bring 'the heat' with pressure acts forcing turnovers and intercept marks in defense. The two rucks to work over Grundy. We need to be well prepared to expect a fast game from the Pies and for them to lower their eyes kicking short into their leading forwards. Mids and defenders must zone / play in front and force those longer higher kicks to the advantage of our intercept defenders.

Prediction is the Eagles will have too much class and too much hunger. The likes of Nelson, Oscar, Gaff, Sheppard, Cameron, Hickey and Nicnat have yet to taste premiership success. Those fringe players will be desperate to hold their spots. In front of a home crowd I can see the Pies putting up a good half before the Eagles go up a gear in the 2nd half and pull away.

Result: Eagles by 47 points.

PS will update teams when selections released.....:thumbsu: Done!!

Reserved for melts over Masten's continued selection.
I'm not fussed about Masten being in the team. Think only one of Hutchings and Masten should play at the same time and I think the best replacement for Masten is Brander, who needs a couple of good weeks in the WAFL coming back from his calf injury.

Need to be switched on. Anything more than a 3 4 5 6 goal lead will probably be insurmountable.

Pies are usually good away and we don't have the best record of driving home advantages.

Eagles in a thriller, 7 points.
As long as they don't read the press (having them as flag favourites) as complacency could possibly set in, although in saying that apparently Simmo has been onto them about that. Just a matter of the boys playing to Simmo's instructions!

Depending on how many points they score
No, realistically it does not depend on how many points they score.
If we win 20-0 then our percentage stays below theirs. If we win 21-0 it goes above.
If we win 200-180 then our percentage stays below theirs. If we win 201-180 it goes above.

Yep.
A magpie without his swoop is no Magpie at all.
Smash them while they are down.

It's been 10 years since Collingwood have beaten West Coast upon WA soil.

If things go to expectations, that record will continue tonight.

The Magpies have been very average since May.

Ross Lyon broke them in Round 11 by showing the rest of the competition that if you simply pack numbers behind the ball, Collingwood are unable to move it offensively with any purpose.

They lack disposal outlets akin to Hurn and Jetta and thus end up chipping the ball around without gaining any territory.

Preview-01.jpg
Collingwood have struggled to move the ball forward recently.

Furthermore, the Magpies have failed to show any respect to the opposition extras pushing back and in a team that is carrying a lot of one-way runners, they have been cut into pieces on the counterattack in recent weeks.

Preview-02.jpg
Opposition dominance of the outside ball has translated into scoreboard impact.

Completely unaccountable on the outside, this is how Collingwood will be beaten again.

I suspect Buckley will try and play a fast and dirty game. By that, I mean I expect the Magpies to be playing on at every opportunity, running deep to stretch the defence and use a lot more low/ground level kicks going inside forward 50 in an attempt to negate intercept marking.

Greenwood has been brought in to tag, but he can't run with them all. Who he doesn't run with will get off the leash and set the match up.

The forward line for the Eagles will get plenty of ball as Collingwood have been poor when it comes to centre clearances and maintaining possession:

Preview-03.jpg
Collingwood allow the opposition opportunity to gain the ball.

Watch for the Eagles small forwards pushing into the defence and then presenting in the corridor when possession gets turned over.

In dry conditions, Naitanui's dominance of centre clearances in combination with 6-6-6 fixed starting positions will place the Magpies on the back foot from the start.

If the club is able to prevent the handball chains from Collingwood's approach, this match could turn into a flat track blowout in our favour quite quickly.

It’s game day and like the Australian cricket ODI team, we can expect the Victorian members to disappoint.

Will Captain Pendlebury be knocked over for a golden duck by our Tropical Islander?
Will the Pie's Big Show Cox be a No Show and be Barrassed in having his pants pulled down when attempting to join the Harry Highpants Club?
Will Maynard emulate Mr French Cricket Handscomb and have his stumps exposed then rattled when Flying Ryan delivers another rib tickler?

Here is my request list:-
Sheed to slot them through from the right pocket all night long
McGovern to play sheriff as he intercepts galore only for Bruce to be making up more tones of affection
Sheppard to play like he usually does and de Goey be forced into a defensive tagger role on him
Every commentator to be watching NicNat towel up Big Boy Grundy and state “6 6 6” is just made for him.
Gaff to do a number on Mayne leading Carey to get salty about him not taking the Norf offer last October

It will be nights like this that we need to bring our A Game and make sure the Vicentric media start piling more pressure on Collingwood with headlines questioning whether their season is off the rails!
