jack Steven had 21 touches in the VFL and played a couple of games early in the year. Why should he be gifted a spot in the 22 after a big team effort last week? Not many players deserved to be dropped after last weekends game, so how can you justify doing it? Has he shown he’s capable of being best 22 yet? I don’t think so.
Justify it?

Mate they are preferred senior players for a reason.

We're not talking about dropping someone for Armo.

Yeah, because his contract is only one year long so I should make hyperbolic statement about it now because this one year is exactly what every other year will be

What's Long done to deserve immediate recall? Play better, more consistent football than Parker over the past month.

We all know that 'captain obvious'! How is it a hyerbolic statement its the reality. You can stick you head in the sand and wiggle your little tail feathers all you like but he has played a total of 2 average games for the season.

How long do we have to wait until our miracle working medical team realise he is cooked ala Sydneys understandings?

Long playing better than Parker cough, are you kidding?

Why are people making such a fuss about Steven not playing? He only played 3 quarters last week, and hasn't played at AFL level in 3 months. He would put his hand up if he thought he was good to go and be an automatic inclusion.

Was never playing this week, it was publicly stated when he returned to training that he'd have a month of training before a few games at VFL level before he comes back in. He was also never mentioned as being in the mix this week on the club's website.

Take it easy.

I'm not giving up yet but it's getting to be a bit of a concern. I can see him sitting out the rest of the year and if he does that's a quarter of the way through a very long expensive contract that has had one good game to date. Hopefully he does a Daisy and towards the end of his contract he strings solid if unspectacular games together.

Does Grant Thomas coaching us over a decade ago really hold any weight when he is Twitter ranting to stay relevant? Not really.

This rumour he didn't receive a medical has already been shut down. He received multiple and I will take the clubs, and Lethlean's media puppet's word over whatever dribble Grant Thomas is on this week. We are a professional club with very professional and well respected medical staff and to suggest they would be so negligent to not do such an important, routine examination on a player because Lethlean is mates with his dad is just ridiculous.
And Brutus hits it out of the park with a home run...

I i think believe we probably should have played Billy SLATER instead of Hanners...i dont know how much extra we would have had to sling Billy to pull on the boots as well but he would have been mighty effective at the coalface digging out that ball ...billy born to be a an AFL mid.....Hanners ...well its getting kind of sad now...

OK that's it...

Whoever is hiding the key to the meds cabinet, hand it over.

This isn't funny any more.

Is that being a mental illness shamer?.....you're a bad person. ;)

Maybe wait until years 2,3 and 4 of his deal before you claim the sky is falling. Not ideal that he hasn't played more game this season, everyone acknowledges that. But if this process to rehabilitating him properly instead of running him into the ground like Sydney did means he is able to play the majority of the games for the rest of his deal, then there is really no harm done in him not rushing back to play in maybe the blockbuster of the season between 14th and 17th on the hard concrete dome dust pit.

I think at round 19 of a 23 round season things are looking grim if he's not getting on the park, people are entitled to question the trade. What ever stopped him playing early in the year is still effecting him. I hope he gets back next year early or the club will cop it from everywhere.

Too many people seem to think Stuv is getting over a quad or something similar. Yeah, he's had three quarters at Sandy, he's right to go.

Who knows where his head is right now (no pun intended). Physical fitness is sadly only half the battle for Stuv at the moment.

LONG might play a whole game and even be quite serviceable he can even play some stirring football.....and ideally we should avoid pitting one against the other when they are our boys anyway...its just that IMO.... .Matty Parker can electrify a side in 10 mins....he's got that Adrenal Overdrive Floor pedal....hits that and hes hard core. I love watching him attack the options. Hes got that Klingon bloodwine factor. His 10 or 15 minutes radicalises those around him......sooo shouldnt have been dropped. Hes one that really would have benefited from the love. As a part of the team he fills a kind of MILNEY role...you get the impression that he is the cut snake but hes our cut snake. All just opinion i know but i really feel he adds great things to the team....or at least he will given the faith.

Obviously everyone thought he would play more games, but the ranting on around "meh 400k per game Hannebery" "club can't even give a medical" is just getting old and redundant. No one wants Barrett to be proven right but correcting some of issues take time. The good news is he is still training and conditioning throughout this period, including completing full training today, so it's not a dooms day scenario.

We are stuck with him for at least another 3 years so lets just wait until next year before getting so dramatic about everything. We got him for very little, so it's not like we gave up a top 10 pick for him to then have him turn up to preseason unfit, then get suspended in the preseason, then injure himself, then break team rules before finally returning to only injure himself again like some other clubs have had with their offseason recruits.

You base everything around the word if. Not a strong argument

It's an irrelevant argument on all sides. Steven isn't in the team this week and the remaining weeks are something of a mystery. He's illness makes him a day to day proposition and all speculation is hypothetical as a result. He'll be in the team if and when he and the club decide it's right. He will leave or stay depending on his motives and mind frame. Personally I think a couple of weeks in Sandy with no real pressure will do him good, may even enjoy himself a bit. Again, just speculation. We deal in Ifs & buts because it's the best most of us can do on a social forum. Those closer to the source probably don't have much to do with a place like this.

Absolutely but it might be true that he's a bust as well. The media will crucify us if we aren't playing well and he's not playing or playing below par. I don't think anyones getting too dramatic, just questioning it. Hopefully we have Bytel come on or Hunter pick up the slack and he can't get a game anyway, even at full fitness.

I’m usually a pessimist but with Ratten in charge I feel like i’ve been hit with a new lease on life.

Steven - Not bothered anymore, keep him in the VFL till seasons end and get us much as we can for him during the trade period. I don’t think he wants to be here anymore but he would be out proving to Geelong that he’s still got something left in the tank. Keep playing the likes of Coffield, Clark at his expense.

Hannebery - What’s the big deal, hasn’t worked out as hoped but what’s to say we didn’t strengthen certain areas of his body throughout the season. Let him have another crack at pre season and keep him fit enough to finish seasons end. It was always a long term deal and with our current position on the ladder we shouldn’t rush him back to try and prove his price tag. Fwiw I think we’ll benefit from Hannebery over the next few seasons.

King - I love you.

Long - He’d want to finish off the season with a bit of something, can’t say I’ve noticed any improvement in him yet.

Stop being so f...n melodramatic. Surely when we are paying a guy 800k per year we can expect some return? We are not a charity organisation we are meant to be a professional football club. His last 3 years have been seriously affected by the same injuries, there has to be some degree of accountability here surely?
There is no doubt in my mind that the club recruited Hannebery with a long term view in mind.
We had a serious leadership vacuum that needed to be addressed and Hannebery and Slater were brought in the club for this reason.
Long term, Hannebery may work out, or he may be a complete bust, but I would rather the club took chances like this and fail, than to play safe and recruit more beige players with no real upside.
BTW IMO King will be a star and you need not worry about Clark and Coffield because they are heading in the same direction as King. They just need time to develop.
