Preview See Ya 2019, Bring On 2020

From the start of preseason until Christmas all they should be doing is running. Running and theory on Rhyce's game plan/style.

I would like us to employ a specialist running coach for that time.

Every player should be coached at increasing both pace and endurance.

The overarching aim should be to hit the 2020 season in the fittest condition this side has ever been in.

Running drills for the youngsters, but I want to see skills, skills, skills on the agenda.

Our players need to sleep with a football over the preseason.

Williams - Tarrant - Pittard
Atley - Thompson - McDonald
Hill - Cunnington - Polec
Zurhaar - Larkey - Wood
Ziebell - Brown - Papley

Goldstein - Higgins - Simpkin

Int: Thomas, Anderson, Davies-Uniake, (Ahern/Scott/Tyson/Walker/Garner/Vickers-Willis/MacMillan/Dumont/Daw/Hall/edit:Turner)
Have to cringe at a back 6 containing Pittard, Williams and McDonald. That's a lot of left footers with unreliable disposal in one 3rd of the ground. The lack of an intercepting 3rd tall is a big issue as well, its pretty clear we play our best footy with three big guys back there. Majak getting in a full preseason will be key, especially given his ruckwork and ability to be a point of difference in a team that appears pretty one dimensional and blue collar.

I also don't think that midfield has the balance or the talent to push beyond the bottom half of the 8 unless LDU takes a massive step (or Jacobs somehow gets a run at it). It's not shocking, but the GWS and west coast games this year demonstrate how easily our lack of class, spread and defensive running can be exposed by the truly top end midfields.

These kind of issues are what will hold us back from really contending, and highlight how important it is to maintain our top 5 pick in this draft. I'm all for bringing Hill and Papley in (or similar types), but it should be our future 1st that's on the table to facilitate these moves, and we need to be looking st trading some of those guys in the 15-22 bracket who aren't key parts of our best side. The likes of Dumont and MacMillan have currency and are good players, but are they integral parts of our present or future? I would argue probably not. Even players like Wood or McKay could be on the table if the price is right.

We need to bring in more talent right now if we want to contend over the next 3-4 years, both through the draft and with savvy list management. It would be hugely negligent to think we can jump from average to the best in the comp on the back of a new coach and some natural improvement, or by topping up the flanks, and it's for this reason Brady Rawlings will be the most important figure in our rise on the field. Our forward line is electric, our backline mostly solid. What can we do to fix our midfield?

My take is that this is due to not factoring the addition of leg speed in to the team and the pressure it would take off our constantly besieged defence.

Symbiosis, my friend.

Stand back and look at the team again.

Round 1 - 2020

B: Daw Thompson Williams
HB: Pittard Tarrant Ahern
C: Polec Higgins Anderson
HF: Zurhaar Larkey Ziebell
F: Thomas Brown Wood
R: Goldstein Cunnington Jacobs
I: Simpkin Atley Garner LDU
E: McDonald Dumont EVW Turner Walker Hall Scott Durdin Hosie Taylor Tyson McKay

We need to be injuries under control.
As is stands Daw, Jacobs, EVW and Walker have had 2019 as a write off and Luke has broken his leg also.
Hall is yet to return and Tyson aswell has gone AWOL.

We can’t keep hitting August with a 3rd of our depth unavailable.

Only a small sample size I know Snake, but what I saw of Hayden in his debut gives me a feeling he could work his way into best 22 at sometime next season, especially with Rhyce's stated preference for defensive coaching, at least worthy of a spot on your bench ?

Absolutely.

It's just a ballpark team mate.

Williams? Hayden?

Williams? Hayden?

Thereabouts. I think Hayden will play loads of footy next year if his Achilles is right but as we saw with Swallow it can take a while to bounce back. Love Marley but his kicking is so bad - I feel we may need to move on.

There's a few that could work on kicking, but he brings the mongrel to the backline they need.

100% agree with that which is why he isn't in the traded list ;)

Hope we get some games into McKay, Hosie and Xerri to finish off the season. Looking forward to the draft and trade periods, and 2020 it all starts again. For the administrators sake we had better finish above Carlton who’ve appointed a Denis Pagan coached player making it 4 in the afl. Imagine the backlash here if they have a tilt before us. Cmon Shawry big 2020.
