... and we have not been in this position before, given the firsts are not in the Finals.

I believe these are the rules or at least were the rules:
Finals eligibility for listed players
a) Minimum of 3 H&A NEAFL games; but
b) If player has played 5+ AFL games, he must have played 9 NEAFL games; but
c) Should a player not be selected to play for seniors that weekend, he can play in the NEAFL final irrespective of whether he has played any NEAFL games that season; also
d) For week 2 of the NEAFL finals when it coincides with the AFL bye, a listed player is only eligible to play in the NEAFL final if he hasn't played in Round 23 AFL.

The rules are now up on the neafl website. Here are some relevant excerpts:
16.1.2 Finals series matches: When playing against non-AFL Clubs in finals series Matches, the 22 players in each AFL Club’s squad shall comprise of a maximum 16 listed players (primary or rookie list) and a minimum of 6 top-up players. There are no restrictions on the number of listed players on the field at one time.
16.2 FINALS ELIGIBILITY
(a) Any under 18 academy player/under 19 approved academy player is not required to play any Competition home and away matches to qualify.
(b) Any listed player must have played a minimum of three (3) Competition home and away Matches for the club to qualify to play in the Competition finals series.
(c) In the event a listed player has played five (5) matches or more in the AFL, he must have played at least nine (9) Competition home and away Matches to qualify to play in the Competition finals series.
(d) Notwithstanding anything within these Rules, should an AFL Club listed player not be selected to play for his AFL Club in an AFL match, that player will be eligible to play in the Competition finals series Match with the AFL Club Reserves team that same weekend, irrespective of whether or not he has played in a Competition Match that season.
(e) A primary or rookie listed AFL player is eligible to play in the Competition finals series Match where there is a bye/week off in the AFL competition provided he has not played in an AFL team in the week prior to the Competition finals match, irrespective of whether or not he has played in a Competition Match that season. For clarity, this means that any primary or rookie listed AFL player who did play AFL in the week prior to the Competition finals match is not eligible
Based on my quick calc as it stands today the following listed players could play in a final against a non AFL club:

Don’t think Rowbottom has played 9 NEAFL has he? Maybe he has.

I think only Ling from that group would qualify.
Rowbottom only if he plays another NEAFL game.
Thurlow needs another 4 NEAFL games, run out of games
Ronke would need to be dropped and play another 2 NEAFL games
Thats if I have understood the rules correctly.
I hope they give it a crack. It was pretty poor last year that the seniors had their mad Monday in the week before the neafl grand final

I'll be watching for Ling. I don't subscribe to this idea that we need to trade in a big fish. I think the pieces of the puzzle are there and are starting to come together. It includes Wicks, Bell, Foot, and, I hope, Ling.
