Review Round 21, 2019 - Brisbane Lions vs. Gold Coast

Who were your five best players against Gold Coast?

The other club I support Richmond traded in Prestia, Caddy and Nankervis at the end of 2016, that led to a flag in 2017. Hopefully this has a similar happy ending. I'm hoping for a Richmond/Brisbane GF.

So in that scenario you're hoping Brisbane beat Richmond in the grand final?! You heard it here first folks!

Adams was great. He really lifted after the first quarter and played his part well. I don’t think he is much better than Lester, but he deserves his spot. It’s good for us that we have such amazing depth in our reserves. Having Lester, Walker, Keays, Bastinac and to a lesser extent Robertson, Cutler and Taylor means we can cover losses to our frontline players.
This could become very important over the next six or seven weeks.

So much good coming out of a lot of players at the moment. Gotta give mention to the change in Cam Rayner. He has really stepped it up a notch lately. Really commanding displays when he gets the ball in hand. The more touches he gets moving forward the better off we will be. He has September Specialist written all over him.

Good to see him needling that dirty sniper Miller and protecting Neale. Cam is on an upward trajectory, won't be long till he completely dominates a game like Martin at his peak.

Rayner had more disposals and more dreamteam points than 10 suns players ,13 disposals is quite reasonable for a small forward, someone has to finish last in rankings. there is no doubt Fagan has had his side for the finals in his head for quite some time hence Adams being brought in ahead of other players who had probably been performing better in the NEAFL ,he will stick with this team for the rest of the year baring injury and I for one am happy to go with his decisions and enjoy the ride.

Rayner is also a low possession (at present) high damage player. Would like to know his pressure acts and score involvements.

This has been the year of breaking droughts.

Would be fitting if we ended the season with a win against Richmond at the MCG. (We have to lose round 23 for this fanfic to come true)

Valleys. Chelsea.
Has it been me watching games with my eyes closed or is Eric Hipwood found in the back 50 quite regularly recently taking intercept marks?

I want to talk about the evasiveness of Hugh McCluggage. I'd like to know how many times he walked backwards out of a tackle to break it last night. Had me shaking my head in wonder a few times. He's always shown great spatial awareness and an ability to get himself out of a contest in a few steps, but I feel like he has made that tackle breaking ability a real feature of his game lately. Such a pleasure to watch the development in him!

New nick name - Houdini

Quite funny watching him run backwards totally bamboozling a couple of Suns spuds

Also I can't be the only one that's going to miss seeing Luke Hodge running around in lions colours next season. Watching the guy stand in the centre square while we've got it locked in our forward 50 and point at everything has been a privilege. He's so good.

Agreed, it's the little things that he points out that make the difference in case there's a turnover.

i like Hodge to play one more year, does not seem a liability to the team.
on field coaching with the lack of runners been really good. Settling down the team structures etc
Then the footy smarts. How many turnovers and fumbles as someone sees Hodge in the right spot and goes crap.

I thought Adams was absolutely immense down back, took a big number of contested grabs to shut down their forwards.

He wasn't playing particularly well even two weeks back, I think now that he's more used to the pace of play again and shaken off some of the rust, he's showing why we traded for him. Between him, Harris and Darcy I think we can shut down any tall forwards in the comp from here on.

Zorko, Bez and Lyons had absolute blinders, and what more can be said about Charlie? I wonder if there's a way to get him even more shots on goal.

Lastly, he didn't make it into my votes, but I was also impressed with Zac Bailey. He's been quiet in most games since returning for injury but yesterday he had some seriously impressive moments and kicked two good goals. Before the game I was unsure if he deserved a spot in front of Cox, but he's shown he belongs.

Rayner has noticeably dropped weight. One of the tv commentators said he'd lost 6kgs in the past 3 months.

It shows in his effort.

Although as a Tasmanian my view is that the GC should instead have been based in Hobart it's hard not to feel some sympathy for them. They have a few decent players but once again seem set to lose a couple of their best.

And really who could blame them for going.

On the basis of that analysis, the bottom four "ranked" players in our side were all forwards.

Yet we kicked 22 goals and not only that, we are the top ranked team on the ladder for "Points for".

Our forwards as a group must be doing something right

Charlie, Bundy (since he’s been back) and the midfield have been super consistent for us this year when it comes to scoring goals.

Supercoach scores are really only relevant to people who play Supercoach. They are pretty far from an objective measure of how good a player was playing their role.
