Coach James Hird - is it time to give him a second chance at coaching an AFL club? Gil says yes!

Should James Hird be given a second chance at coaching an AFL club?

& lets not pretend Carey wasnt paid over & above the cap in lots of creative ways over the journey, glass houses & all that...

I don't have much of an issue with Hird returning as an AFL senior coach. If he can handle his personal issues and if he so much desires to coach again I would give him the green light.
With that said, going back to Essendon would be very awkward, and I wouldn't recommend it. He'd be safer coaching a different club with a list that he can work with without his reputation interrupting. Going back to Essendon would cause conflict between the fans and also the select players who were there to witness the supplement saga. If he only wants to coach Essendon and no one else, then he shouldn't be a coach again.

I love that we live in a world where a bloke with a pretty much crystal clear copy book for 20 years as a player can cop the blame for a program that was:

- designed by a bloke who admitted to the administration of banned substances at Gold Coast (weapon)

- implemented by a guy that ran a side business in black market pharmaceuticals (dank)

- was recommended by a guy who was living with bikers and has just admitted to having serious problems with illicit drugs (Thompson)

And, that he should be forever banned from returning to the game while weapon gets an AFL sanctioned role with the auditor, Thompson is allowed to continue coaching and Wayne Carey is all over our screens

Not as a senior coach.

Give him a senior assistant type role working alongside Shaw at North or Teague if he gets the Carlton job.

Aren't we forgetting the 4 years he DID coach? 8th, 11th, 9th, 15th. Hardly a record that demands a club appoint him to a coaching job.
Would've been 7th in 2013, and not to mention how dominant they were in the early stages of that year.
That's like saying Micheal Voss shouldn't get a senior coaching job because of his bad record at Brisbane. Coaches change over time you know. That's why this thread exists.

- was planning on investing in a company that made AOD with the essendon chairman

On May 11, Dank talks about an unspecified project.

"financials ready for you and David for AOD project. These financials cover all possible revenue streams, where the project applies."

Voss won a final at least.

Ricky Nixon has been quite open about how he and Essendon managed to get around the salary cap for the 2000 season.

He shouldn’t
Voss has been given enough time and experience as a Port assistant coach to have another go I reckon. Keep in mind when he was at Brisbane he had gone straight from player to coach, and wouldn't have had as much experience.

That we didn't talk to Hirdy proves just how sound the process was.

Remind me of the EXHAUSTIVE PROCESS that Essendon went through to hire Hird? Or Thompspn? Or Worsfold? Or even Sheedy?
And the Sheeds 93/00 flags both tainted by serious salary cap cheating.
Aka his team-wide doping program developed in close coooperation with Stephen Dank.

Apart from the bit where he was charged with bringing the game into disrepute as a player?

Essendon captain James Hird is facing the prospect of becoming the first player in almost 20 years to be deregistered after being charged with bringing the game into disrepute following his extraordinary verbal attack on field umpire Scott McLaren.

Not since Hawthorn great Leigh Matthews was deregistered in 1985 after an off-the-ball king hit on Geelong's Neville Bruns has a player been deregistered. Hird, the 1996 joint Brownlow medallist, is almost certain to be fined $5000 for his comments on Wednesday, when he described McLaren's umpiring a "disgrace", and after AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou referred the matter to the AFL commission he now faces deregistration.

And was involved in a shady scam to cheat the salary cap the AFL pinged him on.

Internet deals with Essendon superstars James Hird and Matthew Lloyd have caused the the club to come under scrutiny by the AFL for potential salary cap breaches.

The Bombers' failure to lodge the payments - and an extra merchandising agreement with Lloyd - could result in the club facing its second salary-cap investigation in five years, along with the prospect of further fines and draft penalties and the loss of premiership points.

Hird is one of the shiftiest characters to ever disgrace our sport.

He should consider himself lucky he's not banned from every sporting ground in the country.

Australia's worst drug cheat, by some distance.

And yet here we are discussing how no club in the land will touch the MASTER COACH HIRD that Essendon brought in to save them from the doldrums of mediocrity.

As of Sandi's retirement announcement, no player in the game has ever lost a final to the Bombers.

That's fine, he was an average coach. Watch him step on and around many football grounds to come though. The fans simply love him.

Start a thread?

Or do you just have a quota of random EFC facts to maintain each day? :tearsofjoy:
