The blunt reality the genuine talent has been spread far too thinly in the indecent chase for the almighty dollar demanded by the TV exects.

The equivalent of at least two complete squads could be, perhaps should be deleted from the AFL but that will never happen.

Aussie Rules is the poorer.
Its why Hawthorn were able to be a dominate side in 2012-2016 years. 80 players, about 30 first rounders in the 2010 and 2011 drafts that went to the new clubs, weren't spread out over more clubs which made it harder to challenge the Hawks as they were peaking.

Either there aren't any dominate sides compared to previous premier sides since 1998, or the game has had a decent paradigm shift. Richmond currently closest to a past premier - WCE last year. Brisbane playing a bit like North 1998, that is the premiers cup above them.

Squiggles are visualizations of AFL team performances, charting attack and defence over the course of a season.

Teams ⇡ high on the chart kick big scores. Teams on the ⇢ right keep their opposition to low scores. Teams in the ↗ upper-right do both. Teams in the ↙ lower-left do neither.

Squiggles are handy because:

  • They visualize different game styles. For example, Ross Lyon teams at their peak lurk on the right side of the chart about halfway up, since they keep their opposition to low scores without scoring highly themselves.
  • They provide interesting season replays, showing how teams rose or fell at different times of the year.
  • They minimize fixture bias by accounting for the difficulty of opponents (and venue).
  • They predict how the season will play out based on current likelihoods.
Squiggle is roughly as accurate as tipping the favourite every game. (Which is hard to beat!) Over a season, an informed, observant human should be able to beat it, but not by much. It will beat an average human tipper. You can review its accuracy by visiting the TIPS section of any year.

Simpson Medal for best WA player yes, but not the Tassie Medal - he didn't even get selected in the All Australian side, which had 3 ruckmen - Peter Darley, John Nicholls and Sam bloody Newman ahead of him. Polly was 34 by then though and back in WA as captain-coach of West Perth.

Cheers Grave. I can recall seeing Big Nic in action for the Vics, against Tassie, that year. I also saw him in the end of season games against Sturt in 68 (my first exposure to a live Aussie Rules game)and some Tassie side in 72.

I was looking through Freo's training photos to check out their slick 90s throwback jumper and I learned that Hayden Ballantyne didn't retire two years ago and there's a guy on their list named Tobe Watson

Hard to think of many, if any figures in the game that are revered as much as Polly Farmer. What an incredible career as a player in terms of his accomplishments and ability transcending the times, but also lesser known is his success as a coach. Definitely worth reading his biography should be compulsory for any football fan.

All three caretaker coaches are going to win their gigs full time when the previous caretaker coach to do so was Matty Primus back in 2010. AFL is such a follow the leader league lol.
St Kilda though is a bit to the other two though. Richardson went into the season under pressure, and they brought Brett Ratten in as a senior assistant in that situation.

This feels more like the succession plan going through.
