Here we are at the last game of the VFLW home and away season and the Tigers face another formidable opponent in top placed Southern Saints. We have made six changes to last weeks team which suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the Western Bulldogs. The inclusion of Katie Brennan makes a massive difference to our chances.
In simple terms win and we keep our place in the top four. Lose badly and if other games fall against us, we could find ourselves missing finals by percentage.
For that to happen Hawthorn (5) have to beat Collingwood (2), Melb Uni (6) beat NT Thunder (10) and Geelong (7) have a big win against Carlton (12) All of these scenarios are entirely possible so we just have to get the job done tomorrow. If either Hawks, Melb Uni or Geelong lose we are safe. If it comes down to that Geelong v Carlton game, percentage could see Geelong take our spot if we have a bad loss and they have a strong win. 34 point loss by us and 34 point win for Geelong would do it.
We gain some handy players this week. Into the team comes a fair bit of experience and class in Laura Bailey, Katie Brennan and Akec Makur Chuot. That's 120 games of AFLW/VFLW between them. Youngsters Grace Egan and Sophie Damon return to the team. We also have another debutante in tall mid/forward Emma Horne this week as our 23rd player. Emma was consistently in the best players for Eastern Ranges during their season this year and was rewarded with a place in the Vic Metro side as they went on to claim the NAB AFLW U18 title.
The Tigers have only had the benefit of a Brennan/Conti midfield combination in three games this year averaging almost 45 possessions between them each game and, not surprisingly, we won them all. Our forward line though, its fair to say, has not quite delivered as a unit considering the personnel there but they should get plenty of delivery this week. After a slow start to her year, Sabrina Frederick is really starting to hit form with two BOG's in the last few games. Lets hope it all clicks for the forward team and if it does we could see another big score kicked.
For the Saints they have had an excellent season. They just get the job done but teams have been in the contest against them in most games. They have a great balance of AFLW and local talent in their side. Their only losses were upsets against NT Thunder and Geelong.
Kate McCarthy is always dangerous and fellow forward Kate Shierlaw (who makes a return to AFLW next year) has been proving more than a handful. Olivia Vesely was also upgraded to their AFLW team with good reason recently and we need to get on top of their Vesely/Drennan/Johnson midfield combination. Drennan in particular is a key as she is a prolific feeder through handball and brings others into the game. The Saints have height all over the ground which is a bit different to what we have faced so our pressure has to be right up there.
I fancy our chances in this game although the Saints are a tough unit to crack.
