2nds AFL Listed players eligible for SANFL finals

PORT Adelaide could face an SANFL finals campaign without its state league captain Cam Sutcliffe should the Power fail to earn a spot in the AFL finals. The classy utility, promoted by the Power in the controversial mid-season draft, must front in the final two rounds of the SANFL to meet the qualifying rules of three state league games after June 30. If the Power hang on to their spot in the top eight and Sutcliffe does not qualify, he is still eligible to play SANFL finals while the AFL side is alive in the race for the AFL flag.

Matthew Broadbent, Jarrod Lienert and Willem Drew are also in danger of failing to qualify for the state league major round. But Peter Ladhams and Todd Marshall are among the 15 players who are clear to play.

........

“We won’t know what our finals side looks like for the next couple of weeks pending what happens with the AFL side,’’ Port’s state league coach Matthew Lokan told SEN SA Breakfast. “If the AFL side are still playing finals we get access to a few more players, if they’re not there is some qualification stuff we’ve got to abide by. “It’s pretty tight for a few guys, but we know that the side we put on the park will be competitive regardless of who’s playing.”
................
Port will have the option to play any AFL-listed player who did not front in the final AFL minor round because they will be involved in an AFL elimination final the following week. Scott Lycett would be available if he stays in the state league even though he has not qualified, but Ladhams and Marshall cannot drop back if they play in round 23 of the AFL.

The Marshall one is crazy.
It doesn't make any sense at all. If they wanted to cap the number of AFL games at eight (which, by the way, they could), they should have worded the rule accordingly!

The interpretation that "nine AFL games" means that a player have played half of the SANFL season in the AFL is ridiculously senseless. First of all, the SANFL season has 22 weeks. Half of it is NOT nine, but 11. They have FOUR byes. Any player with 10 AFL games would have played fewer weeks in the AFL than half of the SANFL season.

Now, THAT makes sense. It follows what this thread has been saying. Still, the AdelaideNow link hadn't Marshall listed among the qualified players. Who would be right?

If Port is out of the AFL Finals [a hypothesis I raise only for argumentation's sake], but is in the SANFL Finals, there are certains criteria for an AFL player be allowed to play. In order to do so, an AFL player must have played:
(a) more SANFL games then AFL games in the Minor Round; and
(b) at least 3 of our last 7 SANFL Minor Round games.

Moreover, in such a situation, we can only field 17 AFL players, regardless.

So far, 16 players have already qualified for a SANFL-Finals spot; and there are other 3 who still may.

Players who have already clinched a spot (16)
Boyd Woodcock
Cameron Hewett
Martin Frederick
Sam Mayes
Trent McKenzie
Kai Pudney
Aidyn Johnson
Peter Ladhams
Joe Atley
Todd Marshall*
Sam Hayes
Joel Garner
Kane Farrell
Jack Trengove
Billy Frampton
Riley Grundy

Players who may still qualify (3):
- cannot play in the AFL (1)

Willem Drew*
- must play in the SANFL (2)

Jarrod Lienert
Cameron Sutcliffe

All other players of our roster are out. They can only play in the SANFL Finals, if and while Port has not been eliminated in the AFL.

It is not a bad side. Our forwards (!!!) would be our strongest line. The trio of followers aren't bad either. It could make some damage, couldn't it?

Port has been wrong before, but someone in the club has just told me that this ceiling no longer applies.

Are Drew and Marshall now ineligible for the sanfl finals completely?
No they both qualified. Drew is playing afl this week so can’t play in Sanfl finals next week if power make finals. If power are out of finals then drew can play Sanfl finals next week. Same with Mackenzie.

Ah … I've been seeking an answer to this. Are you definitely certain of the latter, if the Power are not in the afl finals? I searched during the week to find an answer to that but could not locate any official announcement.

What about Marshall? If the Power ae out of the finals.

Drew hasn't qualified. He will have played the same number of AFL and SANFL matches.

Marshall and McKenzie are the ones who won't be able to play next week.

Marshall has qualified and not playing for power this week so he can play next week

Marshall is playing for the Power this week.

Thanks for sharing the information though.

The Drew situation is just ridiculous and hurtful on the young man. He's played more than half of the sanfl season.
Yet, we have deliberately decided to take him out of the Finals because reasons...

Yep. Absolute stupidity from our footy dept.

Option of a deep finals tilt in the SANFL, or he plays in 1 dead rubber AFL game.

He should not have been selected for the Power.
