PORT Adelaide could face an SANFL finals campaign without its state league captain Cam Sutcliffe should the Power fail to earn a spot in the AFL finals. The classy utility, promoted by the Power in the controversial mid-season draft, must front in the final two rounds of the SANFL to meet the qualifying rules of three state league games after June 30. If the Power hang on to their spot in the top eight and Sutcliffe does not qualify, he is still eligible to play SANFL finals while the AFL side is alive in the race for the AFL flag.
Matthew Broadbent, Jarrod Lienert and Willem Drew are also in danger of failing to qualify for the state league major round. But Peter Ladhams and Todd Marshall are among the 15 players who are clear to play.
........
“We won’t know what our finals side looks like for the next couple of weeks pending what happens with the AFL side,’’ Port’s state league coach Matthew Lokan told SEN SA Breakfast. “If the AFL side are still playing finals we get access to a few more players, if they’re not there is some qualification stuff we’ve got to abide by. “It’s pretty tight for a few guys, but we know that the side we put on the park will be competitive regardless of who’s playing.”
................
Port will have the option to play any AFL-listed player who did not front in the final AFL minor round because they will be involved in an AFL elimination final the following week. Scott Lycett would be available if he stays in the state league even though he has not qualified, but Ladhams and Marshall cannot drop back if they play in round 23 of the AFL.
