Player Watch Nathan Murphy (Retired 2024)

My smoky for the final series, not knowing the full extent of his neck injury.

Was really good yesterday in the VFL, excellent over head with beautiful foot skills. A player with the ability to open up the ground with his ball use.

I’m a fan but just don’t he’s quite ready after the year he’s had. Next year injury free, he’s best 22 imo.

Anyone that watched him yesterday, what kind of player is he now? He’d surely be pushing 194-195cm, could he be a KPD prospect with a few extra kg’s?

Would be hoping that Murphy, Sier and Quaynor are all close to that mark. Best 25 at worst and 15+ games for each of them will point towards good things for the future.

Also hoping one that Kelly and of the Irish lads might take a step up and get a taste of AFL football next year, as we're going to be a bit skinny again in this draft as we have been for the past few years so we need the picks we have to really kick on (including one or two of the Cat B's).

I think we are doing ok for talent in the 2’s it’s just going to be a matter of injury prevention and we’ll have some good players banging on the door.

From what I have seen of Keane he could quite easily be our number 1 full back very shortly. Huge improvement in year 1 which has been very impressive imo.

All those seers who knew we “should have got rid of” Reid and Wells years ago, can you let us know if we should get rid of Murphy now? I want to avoid too much pain if he’s not going to make it due to his body.

To be fair to those people there were people that did actually call for trades/retirements to them back then. Not me but I do remember others posting it.

What about Wilson?

We are relying on some cat bs and rookies to be diamonds in the rough to go with academy and f/s picks. Not saying it cant happen but they have gambled.
Not sure how many genuine top liners are in the 2s, think their is some cake but not a lot of cream.

Rookies/Cat b , Keene Wilson Tohill Madgen
FS and Academy group Daicos, Brown x2, Kelly and Quaynor. (Reef and Nicky D 2020_21)

Atu late has decent upside.
Murphy not sure what to make big wraps inside the club not sure to date I've seen the performance or athletic ability to match hype.
Appleby a Jackson Ramsey clone but imo inferior player to last year's delistee.

Obviously Stepho is a genuine A grade talent already a senior player.

Tbh it reads a bit thin and relying a bit on lady luck with a few of Keene Wilson Atu Tyler Brown etc coming on and performing at a high level then their pre draft ratings suggest.

Wilson is an unknown given he was a former first round talent but a big time out of the system.

In other words I see a lot of C and B grade types a few who have high potential but are rookies so obviously have weaknesses or new to game.

Not a lot of gee he's going to be a star and next top tier of team (outside stepho) aka Pendles , Sidebum, Beams, Daisy T, TCloke, Degoey, Moore looked when drafted.

Quaynor looks good but it will be interesting to see what level he can reach.

Seemed to lack a yard last year, hopefully that was a first year player issue (fatigue) rather then an actual lack of pace.

Murphy is an intriguing player. He is a nice mark, has lovely skills and shows poise in possession, but FWIW, I agree with you, for a flanker/3rd tall type I also think he lacks a yard. Indeed my general feeling when watching his first year was he was a bit of a tweener. Not quite tall enough for KP, not quite quick/agile enough for a flank. I didn't catch yesterdays game, but his stats look great and his increase in height really is tantalising. If he is now a nice mark but 194 cm then he becomes a genuine tall, and the slows I had on him become irrelevant...

He is the Lovely Kick we need and don't have many at all and Seems to read the Player well.

Been perfect replacement for Langdon when he went down

Murphy, Quaynor, Keane, Brown will all be regular AFL players at some point
Tohill, Kelly and Wilson too early to say
Madge, Daicos, Apples will just be depth for a few years, unless they improve markedly

I have Keane in with Tohill,Kelly and Wilson.

Not 100 % Sold on Him

FWIW, I agree with you Dave... No doubt Keane has done remarkably well to already be a good solid VFL quality defender. But if you saw him without the background story (ie this is an Irish kid playing his footy in his first season), would anyone be that impressed? He is solid, combative and aggressive, his skills and decision making look decent. But he is a lowish possession player, Ive seen him take intercept marks, but not enough to say he reads it well, his height and athleticism are only average in AFL terms, and one on one he looks quite hit and miss at this stage. He is a wait and see for mine

OTOH, Im pretty enthused about Wilson, his skills are lovely and you can really see some AFL quality silk and smarts (even if he is more Craig Starcevich in style than Travis Cloke). Im fairly confident he will be a player for us, though I am making the not unreasonable assumption that his strength and tank will improve with a couple of pre-seasons...

On the first sentence, we are in furious agreement. But on the second one, not so much. Langers is pretty quick and can play small (He took on and beat the likes of Robbie Gray) and tall (a superb intercept mark. I could be wrong, but while Murphy is a good mark, I dont think he has the same capacity to play small

Personally I think it'll take him a couple of years to build up his tank to AFL midfield standard and there are a lot of players in front of him at this stage so he might be a longer term prospect.

To be honest I'm more keen on Lynch's progress - haven't caught much VFL this year but I hope he's been coming along, as Cox is 29 and we'll need someone longer term to pair up with Grundy, especially if it's another more mobile type who can play in a similar sort of way to Grundy around the ground.

I'm not a fan and if you saw him yesterday you would agree, but there are some on here who think he is good, only time will tell

He’s a tall forward, why does his tank need to be midfield standard?

194cm he could still easily be a midfielder in the vein of a Fyfe, Mundy, Bontempelli or, dare I say it, Pendlebury.

Will be interesting to see how he does pan out and what we do with him in the preseason - if we could pull a Fyfe-like player out of a hat with a Cat-B rookie signing then why not go that way?

Wasn’t Murphy one of the shining lights and most impressive on track during preseason training? He’s just had a “Collingwood” of a year with unfortunate injuries.

Write off for 2019 really.
Let’s see what kind of player he can be in 2020.

Had we used pick 6 on him - instead of Stephenson (as Derek Hine has suggested he was in our mix) it would have been an disaster on the exposed evidence.
