There are questions being asked to SOS and the recruiting group about us missing out on players. Another tick to Liddle and co about making us a better team both on and off the field.
Appreciate it, MS3. This isn't referring to Martin, is it? Is it a case of holding out too much for what could/might happen rather than focusing on what is on the table/who wants to come?

Love Liddle. Proving to be such a good operator.

Good administration.

Reckon it's probably tied to Shiel and Coniglio, doing our due diligence internally to determine whether there's anything we could/should be doing differently if we want to land someone of that profile. People will likely see this as a negative, or SOS being reviewed or micro-managed, but it just looks like good governance to me. Being a GM or department head makes you more accountable, not less, and if key acquisitions fall through the club needs to understand why.

As they should as questions

And Kelly and Saad and Smith...

I think I recall one of the ITK's saying we were running interference on Grundy. Could pushing his price up force someone out of the side like Jamie Elliott who is a free agent at the end of the year? Thinking Fasolo mk II but with much bigger upside.
love Jamie Elliot. big stomping yes from me. :thumbsu:

Good. I'm very happy to hear this.

Love SOS but he has had unbridled control of recruiting for a while. He's the GM now. He needs to be held to account.

Only thing that makes me unhappy to hear this is it could be brought on by a player over the weekend telling us they're no longer interested...

I'd put most of those 'losses' in recruitment down to us not wanting to pay the price (not in case of Kelly, DS or Cogs though), which in most cases I agree with. It's irresponsible 'just get him whatever the cost' type recruiting that will make Hawks and Bombers mid-table for a while to come. SOS' MO about building a flag list is clear.

The questions might come around where that line is and how close the line is that we draw on deals (say, $50K) for principle sake where we could easily make up elsewhere e.g. I'd hate to miss out on Martin for a small monetary amount for principle sake when he's already saying "I'd come to you for $200K less, just bridge the gap a little" - seeing him go to Dogs.

That said, I trust the direction we're going and at least we'll know that these guys coming to us truly believe the path we're on (or are A-graders who were enticed over other high-grade offers).

And Kelly and Saad and Smith...

Good to hear.

Saad worries me less, I put him in the same bracket as players we did land like McGovern, Setterfield and Newman. You won't get all those players, which is why you chase 20 of them.

Kelly and Coniglio are interesting ones, in that they decided to stay with their existing club. If I had to guess I'd say the questions around those players are whether we were ever a chance of getting them out, or if we used unnecessary time/resources on players who were just playing the field to up their own club's contract offers.

Shiel and Smith are the ones who moved but went elsewhere. In hindsight, both might have been "good misses", Smith with his knee issues and Shiel with his disposal. Given the costs involved, I think SOS is pretty well justified in having held firm on what we were offering.

So for me, I hope the questions are based around whether we're targeting the right players and using resources efficiently in doing so, if we could have gotten the players if we'd done something differently, and if that something different is viable/responsible. It may not even come down to the actions of the list management team - could be facilities, coaching, list profile etc. Important for the club to understand why we've missed certain players so we can give ourselves a better chance next time around.

I'd be interested to know if and why we open the cheque book to certain players who would like to join us but not others.

Sure, we don't want to be paying Martin 700k or whatever. But if the Bulldogs can afford to pay him more, surely we have the adequate salary cap space to make it work.

Also, going off myblueroan and his snippit, have I interpreted it right in saying that the team has agreed to get Betts across, but only if Adelaide agree to trade him at a fair price i.e. Hodge-style late pick?
that's how I read it Matty. :thumbsu: :carlton:

Funnily enough if I put myself in a players shoes I'd be deciding where I'm playing based on my meetings with the coach and leadership group - rather than the List Manager who I'll probably never see again until contract renewal. Are the players doing enough selling the club? What about Teaguey? Is he attending the meetings?

If SOS is being a scab and won't fork out the $ that's fine as we don't want to bulge our cap, but weird he stumped up so much for McGovern without asking many questions. A tall forward (which we have plenty of) who struggles to keep fit and keep weight off.

Anyway good work by Liddle.

Not sure of the poster's info, but if true then it seems SOS, Agresta and Teague are all on the same page now. If SOS wants Betts and Betts (clearly) wants out of AFC, I'm confident they'll let him go fairly and won't stand in the way.

Just not sure how they sell that to their fans... actually, I don't much care. I just want to see Eddie back in Navy Blue.

I would of thought that winning 4 games in 33 would been the reason why we have missed out on players the past couple of years?

If that's the ultimate conclusion, fine. But assuming it to be the case without testing the theory and holding managers accountable for their performance is absolutely terrible corporate governance. It's pleasing to hear that we may (finally) be taking our first tentative steps into the modern commercial world.

Thanks for letting us know, Shmurf.

I suppose it depends on who's doing the asking as for whether it's okay. If it's Brad Lloyd, that's one thing; if it's MLG, or someone else on the board, that's quite something else.

I'm usually just a watcher from the sidelines, however, have heard from someone directly in club management that Brad Hill is firmly in our sights given he has already requested a trade back to Vic, is enormously talented and would make an immediate impact playing for us on the wing.
