All recruiting staff, coaching staff, admin staff, players and the board, should always be held to account and have their decisions and non decisions, questioned. If it wasn’t being done before, I’m glad it is now and I hope it continues.

My take on the post, is the board are worried that SOS is potentially missing out on players, over small details or small $$$$

I would hate to think we miss out on Martin or Papley or anyone because we wouldn’t budge on a set $$$$, not to say we must match offers or trump them, but if we are a fair way apart, we won’t compete.

Perhaps it also depends on whether the asking is actually a result of our inability, thus far, to attract a big fish; or whether its because someone might have complained than an offer was withdrawn from their grasp when it became clear they were merely banking offers? I mean, it seems apparent, we’ve been in each biggish fish opportunity to our eyeballs. So why ask the Q’s now.
Not to mention, the timing of this is a little odd.

It isn't even trade period yet. The correct time to evaluate failures/successes is not before the trade period, but after. Why would you be asking questions of a department that hasn't actually had an opportunity to do their jobs this year?

Furthermore, continuing to speculate from my rear end, Ellis’s manager is a regular on AFL Trade Radio and thus likely has a very good relationship with the SEN crew; the article is an SEN piece if I’m not mistaken?

Mmm perhaps our on-field results are the key factor here? We finished third last and are likely 2 years from competing in finals. We have lots of potential but are not a proven finals team.

Likewise Teague is an unknown for the majority of players (exception West coast, St K and Adelaide).

I have no concern re: Cognilio and I think we got of out jail not picking up Sheil.

I think we are somewhat being used to push up prices but SOS would be happy making other teams pay what he thinks are overs.

If we are competing against Norf/Saints/Gold Coast/Melbourne/Freo fro players we should be winning those recruitments unless they are willing to overpay.

I think we should be aiming for finals next year... no excuses now. Our list isn't that far away from Brisbane's, minus a gun small forward or 2.

I was referring to trading out our first round pick for someone that has had one decent year.

As oppse to using to draft a kid who has had zero decent years?

SOS and co, have 82 games of football to judge Tom on, IF they think he’s worth 8 (I assume there will some change) then I’m all for it.

He’s a good player, if he continues to improve his game, he will be a very good player.

Eddie leaving Adelaide MIGHT be part of a bigger storyline.

Potentially Adelaide lose/let go of Betts, Jenkins, Jacobs (and more?) this off-season. Which could be part of a rebuilding story. And tied in with a new captain.

Depending on how it's handled, it could end poorly like North a few years ago or it could be done amiably like Hawks.

With Adelaide, my money is on the former...

Example 1 - Richard Douglas.

Crows put out media release he was “retiring”.

Douglas then says he’d love an opportunity elsewhere.........

The reality is that we couldn’t match the heavily front loaded deals for Saad and Smith that Essendon could offer at the time following the drugs saga.

We were never in the hunt for Stringer.

Carlisle wanted to join us but we couldn’t (read: wouldn’t) come near the money he was given at the Saints given his instability both on and off the park.

We offered overs money wise for Kelly, Shiel, Rockliff and Coniglio who all didn’t join us for one reason or another.

Who else have we missed out on due to being too frugal?

SOS gets it either way. He's either trading in trash ,or he's being too selective in his dealings.

Unless you're going to splash money around like there's no tomorrow it's actually pretty hard to get A Grade players to leave their clubs. I'd say this goes double for goal kickers.

Other than Saad, the AFL’s favourite Rabbit, and maybe Smith assuming his history with injury takes a turn for the cumulative better, it seems we dodged a bullet in each of those other supposed misses.

Surely SOS can't be blamed for the Cogs Fiasco ??

Still way ahead in the trading and draft ledger for his job to be questioned, it's all well and good for him and team to be put on the griller a tad, but surely he deserves the greater benefit of the doubt.

Just keep in mind we're talking about player managers here.

We may have offered Martin 500k. WB may have offered Martin 600k. Martin's manager could be "saying" WB offered 700k.

It's not always black and white.

You mean Player Managers could occasionally lie to the media to further their clients $$ interests???

I’m shocked.........

It makes sense they would, and questions have been raised about some of our selections, but I'm not sure how names such as Kelly, Saad and Smith come into play. SOS did like Kelly but he fell outside the draft holdings we had. Kelly even went inside what West Coast budgeted for.

We missed (or neglected) types. That was always the issue for me. Putting names forward well after the fact makes for little practical sense.
Why we didn't hone into the types we required should be the question being asked and not for - "Look, he is a good player now so why didn't we take him?"

If we have to put a spotlight on SOS, we should ask him why we didn't consider Stack and why we took some ageing players and project players, ahead of needs. That's the question that beckons an answer.
You do realise that every team (including richmond) overlooked stack in 7 rounds of the draft and rookie draft.

This is selective retrospective guilt laying at its finest.

I never want a person of Stringer's distasteful picaddilos anywhere near our footy club .

It's not so much when you're after types.
We know why we and others didn't take him, but one team put in a little more effort than the others.

This is the way it has to be looked at. Had have it been a CHB, I couldn't have cared less but when you're desperate for types and choose to gloss over them, there's a reason to ask why and maybe we did. I don't know.

My post was more than just about Stack anyway. have to look at it as a whole.

Mate Brisbane have a significant home ground advantage that we don't, we play all of our home games on pretty much neutral venues.

Also the Lions had an extraordinarily charmed run with injuries this year, and I think the Richmond final proved that they are still a fair way off from being a legit flag contender.

They will get a much harder draw next year and fall back down into the pack, so to speak

Not sure Sam Edmund has any respect from Bluebaggers atm, but he reckons we've had Sauce Jacobs through the club for a medical in a view to potentially add him to the list to finish his career as backup for Kreuz.

Double reunion with Eddie and Sauce. Would be extremely surprised if Gibbs' manager didn't ask the question, too. Do I want all three? No way. But it'd almost be worth bringing back all three for a third rounder just to see how the AFC fans react.

I believe Rockliff was missed over years on contract, we would only offer three years and Port Adelaide offered four years.

Oddly enough I believe the rockliff miss has hurt us the most - would have offered a strong senior body to compensate us losing Gibbs.

I think Kris Massie was with them also.

I like your line of thinking. Very mischievous.

Geelong are probably thanking their lucky stars that Stringer didn’t end up with them. Honestly, his performance the other night was one of the most dismal I’ve seen from a player at the business end in a fair while. It was wonderful.
In fairness, Stringer might be glad he didn’t up at Geelong. It’s a good fishing spot, but given the cold sea breezes drifting through the joint in winter, training under the warmth of aircraft fumes is arguably a more attractive choice.
