2019 AFL Crowds & Ratings Thread

Evidently the MCC’s estimated attendance for Friday is 55,000 which is probably accurate.

The Cats previous Semi Finals against the Dockers and Swans drew 45k and 55k and allowing for a natural upswing mid 50,000’s is fair

Talk of 80k was always crazy talk

TV ratings

NRL Premiership Season - 88.201 m total, 459,000 average
AFL Premiership Season - 89.110 m total, 450,000 average

NRL Year - 99.534m total, 490,000 average
AFL Year - 100.886m total, 388,000 average.
Attendance based sport outrates a TV based sport, not bad.

NRL Down approx 1.5% on 2018
FWIW AFL up 0.9%
Basically status quo for both codes

No! the AFL increase is from a much higher total and is one of a few major sports to improve their attendance.

Both would be within the inherent variation in crowds though. ie Neither a 1.5% drop or a 0.9% rise are big enough to indicate a trend or real change.

I would rather the figures are going up and not down like the other 3 football codes in Australia have.
The TV figures are ok as well considering a lot of people watch on their devices nowadays.

Looks like the pricing categories have changed around a lot this week - heaps of category 7 on level 1. Just did a search and got tickets on level 1 in the Olympic for $35.

They haven't opened level 4 up at all. Not sure they're gonna get their 55...

It will be very disappointing if it gets less than the WCE V Essendon match in Perth.

Geelong has a population of 252,217 and Melbourne has 4.9 odd million. In the heart of footy at the G there is no excuse for a full house!

How many West Coast fans will be present at the G on Friday. 20K?

Probably nowhere near that number. Travelling fans are always overestimated, plus I’m not sure how many would rather leave their travel to a Prelim or Grand Final.

That's true.
If West Coast win, it will be interesting to see how many make it to the PF v us.

And about all those tens of thousands of supposed footy fanatics in the 4.9 Million in the AFLs heartland all on the couch watching on TV? BTW there are plenty of Geelong supporters in Melbourne as well!Anything under 70,000 will be a fail.

Wonder if the Cats/WC crowd will be down on expectations because of all the negativity from Geelong about it not being at KP and that filtering through to its fans.

I wonder that as well. The AFL talking points can sometimes seem too clever by half. Some people actually take them to heart.

70,000 would be a significant jump given that Geelong haven’t drawn 60,000 or more to an MCG final against a non Victorian club since the 1992 Semi Final.

Given that the 2011 Preliminary Final, against West Coast, drew 59,455, a similar attendance for a Saturday Afternoon Preliminary Final, would be an excellent outcome IMO

This week always draws bad for finals

It's an unfortunate byproduct of the finals system we have.

The host teams for the semi finals are the ones who lost the previous week and whose premiership hopes suffered huge blows. It's not conducive to attracting big crowds. Furthermore, any travelling fans would probably have to travel the following week as well if they make it through. and it's obviously more attractive to travel to the Prelim than this week. This will be an issue for WC fans this week, I'm sure.

Of course, if the teams who won the Elimination Finals are lucky enough to get a semi final which is also in their home state it negates both the above factors. The last two times this happened we ended up with 90k and 88k for those semi finals. The unfortunate thing is that semi finals between two teams from the same state doesn't happen very often. We've only had 9 out of a possible 40 under this system.
