Averaged 16 disposals a game this season, for a 200 gamer, that’s pretty poor. For that output, you’re better off getting games into a kid.

He played a selfless defensive running wing role which was always going to have low production. That said he isn't very good

Possessions aren’t everything when you play that role. I’m just not sure that was his best position.

But even over his career he's still only averaged 20 disposals. I know they're not everything, but a developing club like the Suns are probably better off getting games into some of their younger players than bringing in an ok at best 30 year old.

That’s a fair enough assessment. Ive always been critical of some of the older retreads SOS has brought into Carlton during his time there and the Suns situation, while they struggle to keep young talent, isnt that much different to the blues circa 2015.

His game is playing as the defensive runner so of course he wasn't getting huge disposals. His game was to say back. Let.Gaff push forward and him play back more apply pressure and cover space to help Sheppered and Mcgovern make better decisions.

Lochie O'Brien has been playing that role for us. Guard the space on the fat side to prevent a quick switch.

It's a thankless role everywhere except the rooms. Only those with large tanks can do it.

He played a link up/pressure role on the wing. Not a high possession role.

His negatives are average awareness and can flub it under pressure. Not a big body.

His positives are huge workrate, great leader on the track and unlike most GC players he is a good kick to leading forwards. Honestly, outside of his huge and often unrewarded running efforts, he is a genuinely good kick into the forwardline. Neat, creative and good at spotting short leads. Weirdly, his best ever football was in his first couple of seasons as an undersized onballer.

Surprised by the lack of interest.

Obviously he is no superstar, but he a is known AFL quality.

Good enough to play 17 matches for a strong WCE side this year (24 matches last year), is only 30 years old, fit and free to a good home.

Should get the ball 15-20 times a match running on his own on a wing and would surely provide plug a hole at a rebuilding side or provide cheap cover at a contender.

Theoretically, he should have some value, but despite being an "elite kick" with elite running ability, he has comparatively little hurt factor, at least in the more recent roles he's played. Would mainly just exist as a professional trainer and example to other players.

Even at his peak, I never found him to be a particularly fearsome force, or really recall too many examples of thinking "Gee, this bloke is a star!". Do WC fans find him to be a disappointment, or does he get a pass because he's been a low-fuss "OK" player for a long time, and was a bit of a free hit in the Judd trade too?

He had two above average years. Not AA, but amongst the best players in the squad. Those were 2013 and 2015. The closer he is to an on ball role, the better he performs. Like a less good Gaff, though with better footskills than Gaff's 2019.

But that's not what WC needed him for.

I was pretty hopeful in 2013, he had a really good year and it was his first real clean run without injury or competition for position.

He never improved on that year though. Was ok in 2015 but fell away after the biting incident and I think he had a hamstring leading up to the GF too.

Has only been a role player since.

Too small and not fast enough to make up for size. Never broke a tackle once in his career which is why he never racked up the possessions

Most of his highlight reels feature him tackling. He slips a couple of tackles in this video though at 1:35 & 1:54. There's also a few instances of him kicking a goal or getting a handball away as a tackle is being applied to him.

he would be a good depth player or stop gap player for 2 years at the right club

If Masten was victorian, he would of been looked at by 2-3 clubs on a 2 year deal as depth.

Funny thing is Crows cant get rid of Josh Jenkins. Crows make the mistake of giving a 5 year deal. if it was only 3 years, he would of been out of contract this year.

yes he would of been a free agent. That would of been easier to move jenkins out.

You know. Taking a bunch of AFL journeyman rather then talented young kids is a pathway to success!

I think Mastem is better then everyone else.in that list. I think Mastem has left for one last contract. He's durable and an ok wingman. Could Do better. Can't do worse for a free agent pick up for 2/3 years.

That was GWS's path to success

They recruited some older bodies who only had a year or two left to shepherd in the new rookies

Fielding a team of 22 kids isn't going to work

Playing someone like a Masten or a Roughead isn't going to quell development - it's going to support it
