The draft and salary cap are designed to even up the competition, but I believe you can argue that these attempts to level the playing field have been compromised by three factors:
1. Free agency, and the pull of big Vic clubs
2. Gold Coast and to a lesser extent GWS, and the lack of player interest in sticking around at those clubs
3. Endorsements/media income in Victoria, which makes the salary cap a bit of a farce

Looking back at the 2010 AFL Draft, Richmond came out with the haul of four players from the first round:
Pick 6 - Reece Conca, picked by Richmond
Pick 7 - Josh Caddy, Gold Coast --> Richmond
Pick 9 - Dion Prestia, Gold Coast --> Richmond
Pick 11 - Tom Lynch, Gold Coast --> Richmond

2011 AFL Draft, Collingwood effectively picked up three
[picked underage, could have been pick 1] Adam Treloar, GWS --> Collingwood
Pick 4 - Will Hoskin-Elliot, GWS --> Collingwood
Pick 13 - Taylor Adams, GWS --> Collingwood

These players are now in their prime, and unsurprisingly they've become vital pieces in two of the most talented sides in the comp. If GWS/Gold Coast never existed, it's likely a bunch of them would have been drafted elsewhere. Just looking at the 2009 AFL ladder, you'd have Port Adelaide pick 7, Essendon pick 9, Brisbane pick 11 for the 2010 crop. For 2011 (ignoring Gold Coast) you'd have West Coast pick 1, Brisbane pick 4, Bulldogs pick 13.

It's really unlikely that Richmond and Collingwood would have had as easy a time poaching players off Essendon, the Bulldogs and West Coast.

Obviously the clubs had to have the home grown talent to have a contending list that would be attractive to homesick talent, which is why other teams with similar prestige like Carlton haven't been able to quite do the same, but I think this unusual period of history has given Richmond and Collingwood the edge to be the best in the comp, rather than simply 'very good'.

Interesting considering everyone at the time said Richmond were screwed for the next 5-10 years due to the Gold Coast and GWS getting all the early draft picks and building superteams.

The Giants developed into a quality side. Richmond pillaged the Gold Coast and turned into the superteam that the Suns were supposed to be.

Hmmm... Conca was widely ridiculed as a wasted top 10 draft pick. He has also left the club.

Prestia came to us at the end of 2016, a year where we bombed. There’s a thread in the bay calling him dumb as dogs**t for choosing us, and a thread on the main board ridiculing his and the club’s decision.

Caddy came to us from Geelong. Not really fair to say we benefitted from Gold Coast.

Lynch came to us after spending 8 fruitless seasons on the Gold Coast. It was probably always inevitable that he’d return to Victoria, and we did have to compete with Collingwood and Hawthorn for his signature. Thankfully we’d built a club culture that appealed to him more than the Pies and Hawks, as well as the other Vic club’s.

The pies paid through the teeth for Treloar, got rid of Heath Shaw for Adams (and had to pay part of Shaw's $)
WHE was the only one off that list were if was more favoured to Pies in the trade in terms of price paid.

I guess every year a Victorian club wins a premiership we are to expect 3rd wave feminists like the OP to get on here and start whinge bag threads about how MCG tenants are the AFL's version of white privilege.

Some suggestions to the OP. Get a coach who knows WTF he's doing. Don't alienate half your playing list with ridiculous pre-season camps. Appoint a bloke who can get a kick as captain. And take the tin foil hat off your head.

Yeah Carlton haven’t recruited any players from GWS or GC........

Collingwood traded for each of those players, they didn’t just walk up for free.

Dont have any issues Vic teams trading in players.

Do have an issue with top for teams getting free agents and paying nothing.

The FA system should change where a top 4 team should cough up their 1st to go to the team losing the fa plus they get the compo pick. None of this twobites at the cherry.

It wouldnt have stopped Richmond this year but the AFL needs to pull its head in and even up the fixture ffs. When was the last time Richmond played the Eagles twice in a season.

Tigers gifted a dream run home for the final three months of the season with two trips outside Vic. AFL love their MCG Tigers games to pay for their fat bonuses.

as far as im concerned the afl didnt give a rats ass when richmond was in the shitter during save our skins or when we were s**t for 37 years. The fact that we had to rebuild during compromised drafts also didnt even make a blip on the AFL's radar. The fact that GC's gun players ended up at richmond is just karma for that sh*tstain of a club being in existence. Long may they rot at the bottom.

GWS have been raided by Carlton.. funny enough this gets ignored though.
They also dont have the culture that Richmond does... TBH Carlton do scare me a little with all their high draft pick players ( self procured or recruited otherwise ). If they build the right culture they will be very potent. Time will tell if Teague is the right person to do so.

Lynch and Prestia were brilliant moves.
They lost out on a crack at Brodie for Prestia but got a ready made player for the spot he'd develop into
Lynch was a no brainer. Top 5 key forward in the comp. Free hit. Whoever got him was getting a big upgrade to their list.

Both clubs were going to be ripe for the picking. You can't hold that many elite kids together.
GCS lost their cream. GWS kept theirs. One is a wooden spooner, the other a GF runner up.

Richmond & Collingwood have picked their targets nicely from these clubs.

I think the dumbest rule the AFL agreed to is the 95% floor cap or whatever it is, forcing the bad clubs like Gold Coast to pay almost as much for their players as Richmond do, and as a result Gold Coast have no salary cap power to either go after big fish players or even keep their own players. Lowering the cap floor to 90% or even 85% would help the poorer clubs a lot.

plenty of anomalies around in football. Collingwood havent played at kardinia park is a long long time. No reason why, it just is.
You whinging about us not playing you two times in a season is bizarre.

You failing to coming to come to grips with 2017, two years on is honestly just an embarrassment.

edit: you're west coast fan and an Adelaide fan. whoops. does explain alot though.

Sorry I meant 2010 season, but the point just being the draft is there to distribute talent, and even the worst team only gets one pick in the first round. The fact that the expansion drafts concentrated talent in brand new clubs the players then wanted to depart, allowed for that talent to then concentrate within the MCG tenants. It's probably not what the AFL intended but it's resulted in what we're seeing now and is interesting from a list management perspective.

To those mentioning Carlton: fair point they've collected their share, and I wouldn't be surprised if they're right in the premiership race within 2-3 seasons at most.

It’s not the pies or tigers fault if this is an issue

They have no obligation to anyone bar their own teams

The gws and suns build were designed to gradually lose players

Just the suns lose everyone

Giants seem fine

I have posted before that any team that trades with the expansion teams should lose an extra pick

eg trade 2nd round pick for a player then they also lose that pick in the following years draft
