Aren't those two things mutually exclusive?

yep, as above. Bont & Lobb v Taranto i guess. Id give it more thought if it was anything serious.
Also we wouldn't get Merrett in that scenario. My version of the Sliding Doors scenario with no saga:

2013: Same trade happens for Crameri and Gumbleton. Draft Cripps, Merrett, Lobb and Fantasia.
2014: Have picks 12, 30, 48. Trade 30 for Cooney. Draft Weller and Ed Langdon (pick 48). Keep Ryder.
2015: Unlikely to finish bottom 4, say finish 6th. Trade Melksham for the second round pick again, keep Carlisle. Draft Gresham (18), Redman (same pick), Bonner (pick 37), Brown, Eades, Hartley
2016: No drug saga bans. Make top 4. Trade Hibberd (same trade). Draft Ridley (pick 17), Begley etc.
2017: Trade Weller for pick 2. Get SSS in for the same deals. Draft Guelfi as a rookie instead. Use pick 2 on LDU.
2018: Same trade for Shiel, don't bring in Clarke due to having Ryder, Bellchambers, Lobb and Draper, bring in Bowman.

Carlisle - Ambrose - Saad
McKenna - Hurley - Gleeson
Gresham - Cripps - Merrett
Langdon - Daniher - Fantasia
McDonald-Tipungwuti - Hooker - Stringer
Ryder - Heppell - Shiel
Redman - Smith - Lobb - Davies-Uniacke

My only issue with this universe is that this wouldn’t happen -

Forgot Dusty :p
I'd go Bont over Cripps. And id still trade Carlisle for Pick 5 and get Francis.

I take Cripps, Lobb, Merrett over Bont and Lobb/Merrett. And I wouldn't.

Much of a muchness Cripps v Bont.
I like Bont's ball use by foot, but in Cripps you get a beast at the stoppages.

Francis over Carlisle for me every day of the week. Give it time, but in a couple of years i see Francis as one of the best rebounding defenders in the comp. Rance level good.

More realistic version of sliding doors:

2013: Trade Crameri, draft Apeness, Merrett, Karpany and Fantasia
2014: Finish 7th. Lose a final. Draft Corey Ellis and some plodders
2015: Finish 8th. Lose a final. Trade Carlisle who is still salty for pick 6. Trade Pick 6 and 12 to Gold Coast for pick 3. Select Callum Ah Chee
2016: Finish 8th. Lose a Final. Trade Apeness for magic beans. Select Dan Venebles
2017: Finish 8th. Lose a final. Draft Jarrod Brander. Delist Ellis
2018: Finish 8th. Lose a final. Send 2 first round picks to GWS for Shiel. Delist Ah Chee
2019: Finish 8th. Lose a final.

Ooh Brander.....

i wonder if there is a more pessimistic bunch of supporters in AFL land.
At least tigers supporters still had pride during their 4 decades.

I feel this club has jaded us to levels unheard of.

if we lose Daniher, Fanta & Laverde which right now is pretty likely - then our half forward line will be a real work in progress... We desperately need to pick up someone that can play a CHF/key froward role...Right now the starting 22 (without Daniher, Fanta & Laverde) would be something like;-

Hurley Ambrose Redman
Gleeson Francis Saad
Merrett Shiel Parish
Langford Brown McKenna
Stringer McKernan Tippa

Bellcho Heppell Smith

Bench from: McGrath Zakka Clarke Hooker

Hooker will definitely need to spend some time forward in 2020 unless we can pick up Jenkins or someone similar as we really need another decent forward target. Basically we are missing a key forward, big bodied inside mid and a ruck - although once Draper comes back we should be OK but I can see Bellcho finishing out next year and his career in the reserves

Guelfi out. Gleeson in and Redman on a wing.

I’m curious, how do we get our hands on 2 metre Peter?

I actually quite like the idea of using Langford as a forward. In fact the main good thing about Langford as a midfielder is that he does have games where he drifts forwards and kicks a goal or two. Is a good mark, pretty good at timing his leads and has a good tank (though pretty slow) and is a nice straight kick at goal. I reckon he'll be better than Laverde was in the role though he won't crash as many packs but will probably kick more goals and take more marks on the lead and in one on ones.

I don't really see why we would play all of Hooker, McKernan and Brown though. I'd leave Brown in the reserves to fill in for when one of the other 2 are unavailable. Better off playing a smaller forward line and adding someone like a Snelling, Ham or Begley. We really don't have a huge need for Hooker down back and its probably good to start getting games into Zerk-Thatcher. The only matchup I reckon we'd bring in Hooker for is Tom Hawkins. Probably vs Geelong just send someone like Francis forward for a week.

you might have got one out of 22, which isn't a bad effort

We could be half way through a premiership parade and I’ll probably be staring blankly into space somewhere thinking ‘I’m just not quite sure our midfield bats deep enough to really challenge, if only we added Cam Ellis-Yolmen’.

Genuine trust issues.
