It should have backfired miserably, they would have ended up 20+ seconds off the pace without Vettel stopping. Mercedes don't really need to be taking these risks, both championships are done.

Literally only a 5 lap window it would have worked in as Ferrari would have again been too close before long.

Could have got the same result starting on softs and just reacting to Vettel's stop.

You've acknowledged the drivers and constructors championships are done, so does it not make sense that Mercedes are gambling on race wins instead of just plodding home safely from 3rd to 6th? Same with Ferrari now too.

Dan's race was over when he signed for Renault last year
That move to Renault was Webber's move to Williams.

Career killer.

Their strategy is horrible, their car is mid pack at best and ARD has no luck at all. Last race in 20th he needed some positional help to move up and he got none, this wek the positional help... was his incident when GRO and GIO went 3 wide into T2.

Such a wasted year and next year I fail to see being any better and having a Frog as a team mate .... wonder where that sentiment will lie.

Fair enough, contradiction to their actions last week asking Bottas to slow down so he didn't overtake Hamilton though.

As Crofty alluded to last night, Bottas knows his place as a Hamilton helper. Probably one of the best wingmen in recent times in F1 - race pace consistently slower than Hamilton, can back up competition when needed, no complaints (at least in public), never questions team orders, and of course helped by being in a superior car so he also can occasionally compete for a win when circumstances permit.

Bottas has been helped out on occasion by Hamilton (eg end of race swap in Hungary last year) but by and large he seems to accept his lot in life.

Without this Merc drive, Bottas might still be driving a Williams....

With McLaren ditching Renault engines for 2021, I don't see them surviving long term let alone being competitive.

Yeah unfortunately I think this is the death spiral for Renault. They were able to become a midfield team immediately because of the revenue from supplying McLaren and Red Bull. I can see the sponsors slowly abandoning them and eventually causing the team to fold. Good thing that ADR's contract is for only two years I've heard.

Its strange that Ocon would move there though, when he seemingly was the next in line for a Mercedes seat. Obviously Lewis is hanging around (and therefore Bottas) for a couple more years.

You guys are crazy. Renault don't have to do anything to piss you off, you're all champing at the bit to rip into them.

You're all happy to kick them in the nuts, but don't even acknowledge when Ricciardo *s up.

None of you are saying that maybe Renault should've kept Sainz, as he's driven better than Ricciardo throughout this season.

There are many variables that contribute to a result. But in Monza, Renault showed they were a better engine than Honda. So Ricciardo is justified going there, if he doesn't feel comfortable at RB.

RB have not yet sufficiently replaced Ricciardo. For the big deal being made about Verstappen this year, Leclerc has overtaken him for 3rd, and Vettel would';ve got him had he not broken down. But is likely to by the end of the season. For all that effort

For all the commotion, RB have not progressed with Honda. They've only won with a fortunate situation at Austria, and a rain affected race in Germany. There's been no authority unlike with some of their wins with Renault.

Ricciardo is not entitled to a drive with a title contending team just because his contract is up and you all seemingly think he should get one.

For the first time ever, Ricciardo's progress and opportunities in racing has gone back a bit. Unlike previously, where he made the most of his opportunities and other opportunities opened up, there was literally no room for him. There's nothing he can do about it. But most of you have not been able to let it go.

Even though you're watching F1 on tv, it's not a tv show you're watching. There's no script writer of producer that's going to create a spot for him in a championship contending team.

That's how racing goes, and that's it. You guys talk like no other driver has had their career stall or go backwards before. ******* hell.

Every ******* race.

And as far as Webber goes, picking Williams over Renault was better for his career. He wouldn't have gone anywhere near RB had he initially gone to Renault. Even then, when driving a better car than Alonso during 2010-13, he got beaten by him 3 times. But one time he got him, he pipped Alonso at the last race, RB giving him a charity win, when he hadn't won a race the whole season.

Does anyone seriously reckon Webber not gong to Renault in 05, and being team mates to Alonso, was a missed opportunity? 0-3 wins had he gone to Renault instead of Fisichella. Not going to Renault probably extended his career 3-5 years.

Mclaren have been a mile ahead of Renault all year particularly in the strategy department. Monaco springs to mind, Renault had more pace then Mclaren but Renault stuffed up pitting both their drivers early while Mclaren used Norris to get Sainz a free pit stop and easy 6th.

Hulkenberg comfortably beat Sainz H2H last year and he isn't getting anywhere near the same results he was because the team has gone backwards. As for Ricciardo, you would pick on him for last week at Singapore when the team destroyed all his hard work (twice) with the qualifying error and then making him run 15 laps too long allowing everyone he overtook to undercut him. The fact he got a puncture trying to overtake should have never been on the cards because he should have undercut to keep track position and finished 8th without incident.

No doubt that Ricciardo's errors have compounded Renaults lacklustre season. He should be a more than a little embarrassed that his departing teammate might beat him in the Championship.

But F1 is a money game, and when you lose both of your engine customers within a couple of years it is very difficult to bounce back from that, especially when your engine was pretty rubbish (comparatively) in the first place. Say what you will about Honda, but they have actually shown significant improvement between 2018 and 2019 (they even have a Q3 engine mode now).

Red Bull are closer to the Top 2 than they were last year.
