This is a great appointment. He's experienced in his time footy clubs at the absolute full spectrum, from complete and utter duds to elite Premiership winning quality. He can impart his ideas as to how the Tigers went from ineptitude to dominance..it will be fantastic for Geelong to hear his story and how he can help get Geelong there again.

Geelong has added to its coaching staff with the appointment of Shaun Grigg as a development coach.

Geelong has added to its coaching staff with the appointment of Shaun Grigg as a development coach.

Grigg enjoyed a decorated playing career with Carlton and Richmond, playing 214 games over 13 seasons. He was a member of the Tigers 2017 premiership winning team, and twice finished in the top five of Richmond’s best and fairest.

Grigg, 31, retired midway through the 2019 season after battling knee and hip injuries. Grigg began his AFL career at Carlton, where he played 43 games in four years. He went on to play a further 171 games with Richmond. He kicked 96 goals during his career.

“Shaun established himself as a quality leader and as an experienced player, he helped many young players coming through," Geelong’s general manager of football Simon Lloyd said.

"Now as he enters his post-playing career he can devote himself full-time to working with young players as they grow in the AFL environment."

“We are excited to add Shaun, who has come from a highly successful club. He is a high quality person and we believe he will enjoy a long career in coaching.”

Grigg visited GMHBA Stadium today and said he was looking forward to bringing something different to Geelong and working with the club’s young players.

“Having a quick look and playing against them (Geelong’s young players), they’ve got a lot of good young talent. Hopefully I can teach them a little bit and fast track their development to bridge that gap, so they can come up and play good senior footy.

“Obviously I experienced some good young players at Richmond and helped those guys play good VFL footy and also step up and play that same footy in AFL.

“I love footy and to be around footy clubs, it’s a special thing so when the opportunity came up to pursue it (coaching) and have a crack at it, I was absolutely rapt and grateful for the chance.”

Grigg will begin his role with the club in November.
