Not a coincidence, but given how bad GWS were in their first few years, does anyone find it funny how the two lowest scores in the club's history occured in the season when they made the GF?

It's sort of like Port Adelaide, the 119-point GF thrashing in 2007 was their heaviest AFL defeat at the time (the Hawks and Magpies have since beaten them by more).

Collingwood wins second premiership in 3 years by beating an “expansion” team in Richmond playing in its first Grand Final.

The other “expansion” team that joined at the same time as Richmond was University, which had an abysmal record, never made finals (and was no longer in the competition by 1919).

In a Victorian-only competition, Melbourne finishes last and wins the wooden spoon.

The other “expansion” team that joined around the same time as GWS was Gold Coast Suns, which has an abysmal record, has never made finals (but is still in the competition).

In an Australia-wide competition, Melbourne finishes in the lowest place of Victorian clubs (17 of 18).

I've posted this before in other threads but it's worth reposting because it involves an actual coincidence. And a good one at that.

In 1989 the Port Magpies absolutely belted North Adelaide in the SANFL grand final; here is the summary:

Seventy five years previously, the same two teams played in the 1914 grand final; here is the summary:

So North didn't improve one jot in three quarters of a century!

BTW, I was at the 1989 game. Unbelievable how bad North were.

If you count finals, both grand finalists Richmond (2203-1820) and GWS (2203-1970) finished with exactly 2203 points scored for the year.

It's probably come up before, but in the 2008 pre-season young Western Bulldogs player Jarrad Grant suffered a strange injury when stung by a stingray in Port Phillip Bay, putting him out of a practice match against Essendon scheduled for that weekend.

Grant amazingly was recruited from TAC Cup team the Dandenong Southern Stingrays, but things get really bizarre when you take into account the date of the incident - 22nd February 2008 - which would have been the late Steve Irwin's 46th birthday.
