Hard to keep up with world champs when you don't have pay TV and the ridiculous times finals are being run to avoid the desert heat in Qatar mean finals are on at crappy times to get up and watch live on the net.

But this morning was a good day for some young Aussies as they build to Tokyo, no medals, but some PB's and highest placings at world champs in a long time.

Gold medal winning throw by Kesley-Lee Barber.

IIRC Australian's have won 3 silver medals in this event for the women's since 1983 first World champs + Olympics. Louise McPaul at Atlanta Olympics then Joanna Stone at the World champs the next year in Athens then Kim Mickle one of the world champs earlier this decade. She had a crack at AFLW in 2017.

Men's and women's 50km walk were both incredibly riveting viewing.

This competition has been a shambles from start to finish, but the athletes themselves have put on a brilliant show. Hassan was unbelievable in the 10k and probably would have won the 800m if she had competed- such is her dominance.

AlSal working his magic again 🤨
Hassan is the very definition of too good to be true.
Jess Hull just signed on at NOP...i wonder what she'll do now?

10k was good for the Aussie girls too. Sinead and Ellie both ran pb's off the back of what was essentially marathon training for New York.

Absolutely. But the run itself was brilliant.

Hull will stay at NOP, she's always been willing to "push the limits" to succeed.

indeed. glad she's running the 1500m and not the 5k. she would have jogged in the gold in the 5k but the 1500m is pretty stacked...it's going to be one hell of a race.
as a point of interest Hassan closed the last 1500 of the 10k in 3:59.09 which would have qualified her fastest.
Jess Hull ran a pb but just missed out on one of the fastest loser/non automatic qualifier spots...a fair effort at her first major champs

I liked Hull's run in the 1500m semi. Just didn't have any oomph right at the end but ran it right out, got jostled and may have lost some momentum in the shadows of the line.

Women's 400m final, wow, 3rd and 5th fastest times of all time. Quickest since Perec at Atlanta in '96. Still half a second outside the *world record.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson smashes them in the heptathlon, very enjoyable to watch and I enjoyed the decathlon, the young German bloke, Kaul goes bang in the javelin and wins.

Brandon Starc just can't jump more than 2.30 in big meets. 6th is a solid result. If he can get to his PB of 2.36 maybe break it, then he is a serious contender to win gold in Tokyo next year.

Want to see Brooke Stratton do well tonight in the LJ qualifiers and make the finals. Has been in Ok form in Europe, jumping 6.60's and 6.70's when her best in 7.05. There are only 7 of the 31 competitors who have jumped 7 metres or more. If she jumps a PB she will medal.

somethings not quite right with Stewy McSweyn. he was reportedly going to have a crack at Mottrams 5000m national record in the Diamond League final and ran a 13:32 then ran 13:30 in the final here.
his 1500 was pretty disappointing too.

the mens steeplechase final was epic. watch it if you can.

Yep finally got to see the last 300m and an epic finish indeed.

Shades of Sydney Olympics.
Here Kipruto's winning margin in the 3,000 final was 0.01 and in 100m final, Coleman's margin was 0.13

In Sydney Gebrselassie beat Tergat in 10,000 metres by 0.009 and in 100m Greene beat Bolton by 0.12.

Brook Stratton jumped ok to make the LJ final tonight.

The men's marathon started at bloody 11.59pm local time. Like one male competitor in the 50km walk said earlier in the week, you can finish your race then go to a night club with these ridiculous start times - but being a Muslim country there probably won't be any booze.

Some amazing results last night. I listened to the IAAF radio coverage with British commentator Rob Walker.

Shot Put had a crazy end to it. Kiwi defending world champ Tom Walsh threw it 22.90 with his first throw which was the 5th longest of all time and 4th longest by individual as Randy Barnes of USA has top 2 throws. His next 4 throws, 3 are fouls and nobody gets within 20 cms. Then the last series of throws commences

3rd last throw was by US Rio silver medalist ( 2015 world champ and 2017 world champs silver medalist) Joe Kovacs who throws it 22.91 to equal 4th longest ever throw. Then Rio gold medalist Ryan Crouser steps up who was in 2nd place, throws in 22.90 and because he has registered throws better than Walsh goes into 2nd spot on a countback. Then Walsh launches a big throw but he fouls. So 3 medalists all record PB's and produce =4th and =6th best in history.

1,500m for women produced an ever better set of results. Dutch runner Hassan who has been part of Alberto Salazar's Nike Oregon Project was trying to do what no man or woman has done before and win th 10,000m and 1,500m at the same Olympics or World Champs.

In the 10,000m she won in a PB and world leading time for 2019 and dragged the next 4 runners to run PB's, 6th placed ran a SB and the next two ran PB's. But because of the heat it was a minute behind Ayana's amazing ( and yes questionable) WR in Rio.

In the 1,500m she won with the 6th fastest time in history and championship record, and next 6 place getters produced PB's that some resulted in national records and some area/continental records.

5,000m for women was another excellent standard race, the Kenyans finished 1,2 both with PB's and winner Obiri in a championship record, a rare German bronze in this distance, then 4th-7th and 9th-14th of the 15 runners produced PB's. It was a fast time, around 38th best time ever, but a month earlier in London, Obiri produced the 10th fastest time in history.

The triple jump was going on and Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas was trying to break the 1995 world record of 15.50m set by a Ukrainian. She jumped 15.41 in Spain in July, 2nd longest ever recorded, and produced a 15.37 with her second jump and the WR was under threat. He last jump she was over the board by 10cm and it was huge and they reckon the net length was more than 15.50. Rio gold medalist ( and London silver) Columbian Caterine Ibarguen had a poor night until her 5th jump and it produced bronze. She has been one of my favourite athletes this decade. She is 35, started her international career as a 16 year old and has done high jump, long jump, sprints and didn't concentrate on triple jump until she was 27, won bronze in Daegu Korea at 2011 championships and has medalled at every WC and Olympics since.

Then there were the 4x100m relays. In the women's the Jamaicans blitzed Brits and Yanks and produced 8th fastest time in history.

The mens was tighter. Yanks won in 37.10 the =4th fastest in history, Brits in 37.36 =6th fastest and a new European record and the Japanese 3rd 37.43 the 14th fastest in history and a new Asian record.

The Japs have been working hard on their men's sprints relays for about 15-20 years now and the national stadium will be rocking in Tokyo if they pull out another performance like this next year.

They have made the finals of every Olympics since Sydney for 6th, 4th, 2nd, 4th, and 2nd. They got bumped up to 2nd in Beijing but Yanks didn't make final and Jamaicans won but were disqualified 8 years later because one of the runners, Nesta Carter, was done for doping in retesting within 10 years protocol, and Japanese were a second slower. In Rio they out ran the Yanks to just pip them and finish 2nd, the Yanks were later DQed and it was the first time they broke 38 seconds with a 37.60. This morning was their 2nd consecutive 3rd at World champs

Its taken me a few days to find it but this page on the Oz Eurosport website has a lot of videos of the different finals with a heavy weighting to Aussie performances, but all final events of 400m or less are in full.

Its the host broadcasters pictures but no commentary, so lots of crowd noise is picked up. When the Qataris finally bloody turned up, they were bloody rude and didn't shut up for the start of sprint events.

Hit the Videos link centre of page at

Brooke Stratton had a poor final and was eliminated after 3 jumps. If she jumped the 6.73 she juped in Doha in the Diamond League 3 months ago she would have finished 6th. 7m would have got her 2nd.

Stratton's had a pretty poor season by her standards - hardly got a good jump out there. Just seemed a bit flat - even during the Aus season.
Still, she's finished Top-10 in the world in the last 3 big comps - 2016 Olympics, 2017 & 2019 WCs. It's hard to be critical of someone who is 'only' tenth best in the world.

Watched the women's 100m hurdle final, great win by Ali but jeez the Jamaican, Brown in lane 8 must've gone oh so close to being done for breaking. She definitely flinched and in the process she's stuffed her race (she looked like she expected to get done for it and took a really short step after she got out of the blocks), her team mate next to her in lane 9 didn't even make it over the first hurdle and the Nigerian girl in lane 7 was the last away but quite a way and missed out on a medal by .02 of a second.

They need to police 'flinching' more. In the famous 2011 100m when Bolt got DQ-ed, if you watch, it's clear he reacts to a flinch from Balke in the lane next to him.

Check it out here.

Time in women's 400 flat was remarkable, not to mention WR in the hurdles with close 2nd place getter. Rojas looks like she can break TJ WR at any time. These athletes look clean to me, but I don't know...

Christian Coleman too - 'I went shopping!'.

He complained that they didn't ring him beforehand - 'Every other time I have received a courtesy phone call'. As many other athletes have pointed out, if you get a call pre-test, you can arrange substitutes, tamper with your internal urine balance etc. No other athlete said they get called.

Coleman has priors with missing tests as well.

Interesting that he said he gets a call pre-test - maybe USADA don't want to catch everybody. Just the occasional one to keep up appearances.
