Each year we welcome a bunch of new players to Collingwood, and they fill our hopes and dreams and expectations ...

... but there are a bunch of players already on our list who were fringe in 2019 because they were injured, developing, or struggling for form.

Which of those players do you think will have an impact in making us better in 2020?

Players who fall into this category

- Dayne Beams (9 games in 2019)
- John Noble (5 games in 2019)
- Rupert Wills * (9 games in 2019)
- Josh Daicos (5 games in 2019)
- Travis Varcoe * (16 games in 2019)
- Tom Langdon (9 games in 2019)
- Nathan Murphy (0 games in 2019)
- Lynden Dunn * (0 games in 2019)
- Isaac Quaynor (4 games in 2019)
- Brayden Sier * (6 games in 2019)
- Ben Crocker * (3 games in 2019)
- Tim Broomhead * (0 games in 2019)
- Flynn Appleby * (1 game in 2019)
- Jack Madgen * (4 games in 2019)

* Players who are currently uncontracted for 2020.

I tip Nathan Murphy IF he can Stay Fit.

Played 2 really good AFL Games in his Debut Season then missed pretty much all this season but last 2 VFL Games looked very Promising.

I also reckon:

  • John Nobel
  • Issac Quyanor
2 you named but you forgot Tyler Brown

Quaynor - Should be aiming for 15+ AFL games, although I think those games will be much like Callum Brown in 2019 where he more contributes to the performance as opposed to being a key factor. Moves like a midfielder and I hope we give him time up the ground.

Noble and Wills - neither look to have high ceiling, however they showed their importance and ability to play a role in 2019. With more games they'll have more impact, however their performance won't reach new levels

Beams and Langdon - both have shown they're well inside our best 22

Scharenberg - one who is expendable if the right deal comes along as I'm not sure how in fits into a side that contains Moore (CHB), Roughead (FB), Howe and Langdon (3rd talls). Certainly has the quality required to be a key part if a place opens up.

Madgen - similar to Scharenberg, although less likely to attract good trade value. I see Madgen more as CHB or HBF and he's good depth to have.

Murphy - easy to forget that he played seniors in late 2018, had a good VFL final against BH in 2019 as an intercepting half back. As with Scharenberg and Madgen it's not a role where we're short of options. A full season will see him play AFL, however I can't see him forcing Langdon or Howe out in 2020.

Appleby - does he remain on the list in 2020? I'd have Quaynor, Noble and although taller Murphy ahead

Crocker and Broomhead - like Appleby are they on our 2020 list? Broomhead the more likely.

Daicos - not convinced he'll make it longterm with 2020 shaping as a make or break year. Neat skills, but what's his AFL role? Perhaps a move to half back?

Dunn - if fit will be an important teacher / leader within the VFL system while providing great depth.

Varcoe - if Elliott departs his importance will increase and he'll likely replicate his move to full forward that we briefly seen in late 2019. Otherwise I see Varcoe as good depth.

Sier - if fit and committed he'll quickly re-establish himself as our important component of the AFL midfield.

I’ve got high hopes for Dayne Beams to come back happy, refreshed, rejuvenated ... and with his body well repaired. Would love to see him get back to his best (the club should put up a pic of him from Friday night on stage with Grundy, Steele, and Pendles to remind us who our last four Copeland winners are)

John Noble had a stellar season, a deserving winner of our best first year player award (doing better than IQ who was a first round pick ... sure, IQ got injured, but Noble still played better in his 5 games than IQ did in his 4). He’s only going to get better and make our team better.

I reckon Rupert Wills will take a lot of confidence out of the end of the season and come back even better in 2020.

Trav Varcoe will need to do a Chris Mayne or Leon Davis to be better and make us better. Unlikely, but you never know.

Lynden Dunn obviously isn’t retiring (he’s had plenty of time to think about it and would have announced it by now if he was) and I think he could bring some flexibility back into our side by allowing Roughead to potentially play elsewhere. I’d carry Madgen as back-up, hopefully with either Keane or Madgen to take over the role long term.

Murphy’s horror season is hopefully behind him now and it’ll be great if he could continue the good form he showed at the end of 2018.

I think Sier will end up elsewhere in 2020.

I reckon Broomhead’s days are behind him. John Noble and Brodie Mihochek have shown us that there are gems that can be unearthed elsewhere.

I don’t see that Crocker, Appleby can make us better, so I reckon they’ll be delisted.

Re: Tyler Brown, I didn’t include any players who are yet to debut - there’s a separate thread for those.

A better question is which players will play more games next year...

Fair enough. What do you think?

My thoughts below ...

- Dayne Beams (9 games in 2019) - more
- John Noble (5 games in 2019) - more
- Rupert Wills * (9 games in 2019) - more
- Josh Daicos (5 games in 2019) - less
- Travis Varcoe * (16 games in 2019) - less
- Tom Langdon (9 games in 2019) - less
- Nathan Murphy (0 games in 2019) - more
- Lynden Dunn * (0 games in 2019) - more

- Tim Broomhead * (0 games in 2019) - same
- Flynn Appleby * (1 game in 2019) - less
- Jack Madgen * (4 games in 2019) - more
- Matt Scharenberg (7 games in 2019) - more

Agree with Wills but Disagree on Nobel.

Thought Nobel should quite a bit with his Half a Season at the Club. Reckon he could have a Impact after a Proper Pre-Season at the Club

I could see him Pushing Langdon as I think he be a Upgrade on Langdon

Look I'm no expert but Daicos looks like a first 18 player with hundreds of games ahead of him, I hope they are for us.
Just curious, what do you base that off?

Hopefully a few kids push up and become senior players, but genuine team improvement more often comes from improvement in senior players.

Beams is the one I'd nominate from that list, but I'm hoping for better years from our injured guys/suspended guy, general gradual improvement from all others and an attacking tweak of our structure that enables us to get quicker ball movement and more numbers to forward line contests.

I thought that last year but to be honest was a little underwhelmed with his progress in 2019.

Structurally Mason Cox is arguably the one who can best impact our 2020 fortunes after playing just the 14 games this year. There were certainly games where we missed his height and presence.

I thought we where okay when Roughead was up Forward

I feel he is a very balanced player, kicks well with both feet and holds his own if traffic. That said he's not brilliant overhead (not shit either, just decent) and we have a wealth of smaller players, many of whom can compete aerially better than Josh.

We are getting better by foot, finally, and he fits the bill of a skilled damaging player but he is less versatile than some (not blindingly fast, not aerial, maybe not that strong defensively). I can imagine him chafing behind guys like Josh Thomas and Stephenson.

I hope he strengthens his entire game and makes himself an untradeable asset because he looks like the kind of skilled footballer that make multiple premiership teams.

Your guess is as good as mine but we know something for certain - somewhere on that list, you'll be wrong...

He played 5 games this year and 10 games last year. Very similar disposals etc per game . In a few stats - tackles etc - he went backwards. He will need to improve.

I hope you're right. Hes got a touch of class, but I'm doubtful if he's got enough class to compensate for his middling pace and lack of physicality. He'll need a fair bit of development still.

A full season, particularly finals from JDG would be prettt handy too.
