I suspect it was Wines, but he's a captain and contracted and would have taken a lot more to trade in regardless of what the PA board would suggest.

And now I'm bitter that it won't happen. :nomouth:

If Fantasia is indeed leaving why wouldnt Essendon have accepted that?
Papleys manager may have rang Dodoro and told him that he only wanted the Blues.

Just a newbie here but has everyone forgotten about Ed Curnow?

Everyone saying we need help for Cripps in the middle, well we've got a tough inside mid in Ed. Remember when Cripps went down, Ed was doing the grunt work in the middle with a lot of success. Don't forget a couple of our good wins towards the end of the year, Cripps wasn't at his starring best, others were giving him a chop-out in the midfield. Also look at the development of blokes like Kennedy and Setterfield to play a bigger role in that sense.

As a couple posters have mentioned, I'm more concerned about classy outside mids who can actually deliver the ball efficiently, break the lines and kick goals. We seriously lack that dimension in our midfield. Hopefully Martin and Papley can give pitch-hits and make our midfield more dynamic in that sense.

No one will take the tag off Cripps and put it on Curnow.

I was suspecting this too. As his manager (I think) on trade radio yesterday said he was not leaving port under any circumstances. Perhaps carlton had just delivered the news that we weren't going to pursue. Idk. Its all guesswork.

Great, with Fantasia leaving was concerned that Dodo would pounce on Papley as part of the deal.

Even without Fantasia they have no real need for Papley. They'd have the tiniest forward line in the league if they did.

In hindsight I believe the mystery player was Gaff. It's a telltale sign that we've been told that we're out of the race for the mystery player almost the moment it was reported that Geelong and West Coast found a deal. I think Gaff may have seen the writing on the wall of A) a potential salary cap squeeze and B) that the Eagles may have had to trade someone of profile to get Kelly over the line and now that neither of those are eventuating he's safe in the knowledge that he's staying put.

Yes, I know posters have said it wasn't. But it just makes too much sense.
McGovern, Kelly, Gaff and Natanui all reportedly within spitting distance of $1m. Surely something has to give over there.

The last three drafts we have focused on getting help for Cripps I don't think we should sell the farm for a midfielder.

SPS Dow Walsh 3 top 5 picks
LOB and Fisher 10 and mid 20's
Settlefield two seconds

If those guys can't step up we are screwed anyway because our drafting has failed.

Kennedy and Setterfield are the only two capable of helping out as big bodied mids. Kennedy doesn't have the runs on the board but with an injury free pre-season maybe he can step up.

My question re:Setterfield is that inside mid may not be the optimal use of his talents.

It should be for only two days.
Either make it just a few days or open a trade window of like three months. Either way, it would be better than this. You resign yourself to waiting or you can get comfy on the couch with popcorn for a few days.

Agree it’s a farce, 3 to 4 days is sufficient the competition is so over regulated and small it all a waste of time and tedious over 2 weeks.
Clubs spent more time deliberating than actually getting the job done.

They all leave it to the last minute regardless, so it’s a massive waste of time. There is absolutely no need to extend it beyond this week.

If the List Managers genuinely think they need more time, then move the initial meetings from the first day, when no trades are done anyway, to the previous Friday. Then everyone is prepared to start trading Monday morning. And can easily be wrapped up by Thursday night.

Caught half a discussion on SEN, us or Saints for Butler according to Manager?? Did anyone else pick up the conversation?
