You're kidding.....I mean you're not but that doesn't sound right.

You'd sooner drop 400K that could have been used wisely elsewhere, than to lose a pick #59?
400K may mean losing a key player. Why not just add that dollar to players we need and front-end their contract?

I'm sure our recruitment team can do the math on salaries given its a one-two year arrangement. Everyone says we have money to burn having banked cap space in previous years.

I wasn't for getting Betts for the player alone but there's a good likelihood -

1. Gaining Betts will boost membership. (Even 1000 makes for a lot of money.)
2. Merchandise sales will increase.
3. Attendance (Gate Receipts) will increase, or at least initially.
4. Betts likely to have a job at the club, post career. (He is respected amongst his peers)
5. We may even get 'real' on-field performance from him.
6. We'll be paying a relatively low salary for him.

So where's the harm?
We could have given Lebois another year, but I feel we may have done better here taking all things into account.

Agree with all the above Harker, I might just add, if we pick up Papley and Cuningham stays on the park, Eddie will have to earn his spot so they all have to be in form to get a game. He won't just be rolling up and playing like he once did.

I thought Sier re-signed with the Pies yesterday?

There seems to be some creative accounting going on there. They all but admitted that they were cap strapped during the year yet Brisbane claimed that they were matched by the Pies on Elliott.

And the Saints? 3 million for a very much B grade player in Dougall Howard? Funny buggers.

5 days in and all I can say is, our recruitment sums up our last 20 years. Absolute basket case we are

Lol dude give it a rest you've repeated similar posts over the last few days and it's ridiculous.

There's been like 1 trade made so far across all 18 teams.

Are you even really a Carlton supporter? Because i feel like if you are you should know our recruitment has looked pretty good since SOS arrived...he's turned our list around 180 degrees in 4-5 years.

Of course but to burn money at any time is irresponsible.
I don't know the status of our TPP, but there are always manners in which it can be manipulated to suit.

To suggest in any way that we have the money therefore we have to splash it away somehow, doesn't stick.
That makes for very poor List management.

We all have to understand this.
Maybe the Adelaide 'experience' ruined Betts' year and maybe he has something left to offer.......and if he doesn't, no one should be too disappointed.

I feel that most people understand this now and are happy for us to take the chance on Betts.

We have plenty money for 1 year, way more than solid draft picks

I understand where you're coming from, Harks. However, I think Arr0w is right.

We have money to burn that HAS to be spent THIS year. If the haggling is over a lousy $100k for one year and it's the difference between say pick 59 and 76 then pay the cash and get me SOS and his team a better shot at a prospect.

The only way this changes is if they have agreed internally to take young Manton and pick position doesn't really matter.

We're not going to miss that money now or in the future since it looks like mystery player is not going to happen.

OK, but using money wisely has to come into consideration.

The other issue would be - How would our players feel, knowing that Betts is coming in on 600K? Not good, I'd say.

Anyway, that's not going to happen and a future third or fourth isn't going to make the difference to where we're going.

I don't agree. I can't agree - We have money to burn so let's just burn it. NO! :)

If this was the case, the deal for Betts would have already been done. I'd suggest SOS doesn't agree with that line of thinking....and rightly so.

Why do I have a feeling dodo is holding quite a few trades up
200w.webp

With the focus on getting Papley, Martin and Betts, do people think we should be looking at trading for Aiden Bonar? Would he be the type of player that can make an impact and help Crippa and Co in the midfield? Interested to get everyone’s thoughts on Bonar.

Would depend on the cost, however knowing Hawks they will somehow get Bonar thrown in with Patton, you can bet on it.

Incredibly ambitious asking for more than pick 6 for Hill, which is the exact price for him while contract.

We can’t match the purported 900k though, so Hill will stay at Freo if St Kilda can’t work out a trade.

Our future first would surely be on the table if he held any interest though.

We can match 900k.

We shouldn't tho.

Money, picks, etc are all related in complicated ways. We'd be haggling for a reason, not just on principle, you would think.

Eg. Saving some bucks over here allows us to attract some other player with a big payday up front, etc. Or being frugal this year will allow for a renegotiation with a big gun to create cap space for a Free Agent poaching exercise in 12 months, etc.

You do realise there is a minimum that teams have to spend on players each year, right? I doubt we have too many big contracts on our books and most of our list are young kids on their first or second deals, so we might have to overpay Eddie for a year to meat the minimum threshold.

First time poster, long (long, long, long time lurker). Love the apocalyptic vibes Trade Week brings - I still remember the Shiel Saga fondly. Not liking what last night degenerated into, though.
Anyways
Back to pointless football discussions; Sam Powell-Pepper from Port? Has been openly thrown on the trade-table (Fantasia failure). Tough inside midfielder with pace and aggression. Iffy kick and questionable decision maker with ball in hand, but good at accumulating disposals and can win a clearance. Might come cheap(er) this year and fits a well known “big-bodies midfielder” need.

Regarding his less than stellar off-field reputation, I do know he does some brilliant work mentoring young and at-risk Aboriginal youths and I (this is the personal opinion part) think most of his rep is based on a young, wealthy lad on the sauce making some poor choices.

I reckon you could squeeze him in for a future second.

Feels good to finally post.

The money we've banked from the first year of banking it disappears into the ether if we don't use it this year.

That's not subject to opinion, that's fact.

If not on Betts, how do we utilize this resource?

Why bother though. We’re bringing in an outside mid in Martin, and using a fair bit of cash on Papley.

We’re better served seeing how the cards fall next year and then having a huge crack at Whitfield at the end of the year.

BigFooty is home to some of the worst, there’s no denying it. I’d say however that on the Carlton board, the good easily outweighs the bad and the discussion is generally of a decent standard. Certainly worth sharing the occasional tidbit with fellow tragics :thumbsu:
Brilliant TRP.
You're a good egg
