I don't understand why we need Adelaide to pay for some of Eddie Bett's salary in exchange for a higher draft pick from us. Surely, we have plenty of space under the cap to pay Betts $400K for one season. We were gonna give Congilio at least a mill a year.

We should be paying Eddie's full salary so we keep the higher draft pick. Adelaide should be getting our Pick 85.

SOS needs to bite the bullet and bring in J. Martin by offering our future 2nd round pick and also pick 43 this year.

I don't think Sydney will trade Papley. As such, SOS needs to exchange with Fremantle our Pick 9 and our future 1st round pick for Brad Hill and Fremantle's Future 2nd Round Pick.

Ins: Betts, J. Martin, B. Hill

Say what!

I was worried the Crows might not foot much of the bill for Eddie's 2020 season.

Then I realised the Crows should have plenty of cap space given they'll only have ~16 players left on their list next year... :p

With all this talk the only trades that will go through is Martin, Betts and maybe butler or Wines? Am I reading this correctly? Papley surely stays at the swans bearing the lewis taylor trade. Who else could be a surprise?

I believe it has to with the cap min and max. Paying 95% of cap for 3 yrs allows us to pay 105% of cap for 3 yrs. Correct me if I am wrong though.

We don't want to pay Betts that extra 200k if we can save it for next year for a big contract and take advantage of the extra cap.

A future 4th will likely be a mid 60s pick in a heavily compromised draft. I have no issue with that.

Not sure we want to pay Hill $4.5M over the next 5 years.

Random ferrisb musing of the day.

When entering a negotiation, don't focus on what you want out of it. Focus on what you opponent needs.

Wise words Ferris. It's the essence of Principled Negotiation, which came out of the work at Harvard University (the seminal book is called Getting to Yes). Identify all of the interests of all of the parties (could be money, draft picks, how it looks to the members, protection against injury, leadership, keeping sponsors happy and so on), and then brainstorm options that meet as many of those interests as possible, for all parties.

(And yes, being the nerd that I am, I emailed the Club and recommended it to SOS and the recruiting department on the off chance they hadn't already read it.)

I don't think it's realistic to expect someone like Brad Hill is going to agree to a trade with a club he hasn't spoken with prior to the final three days of the trade period. The costs and picks might line up neatly, but when he's emotionally invested at St Kilda it's hard to imagine he'd suddenly decide to join the Blues on short notice.

I reckon a future fourth in a compromised draft is a pretty cheap price to pay for Eddie regardless of the salary side of things. We also need to ensure we retain enough picks this year to meet the minimum draft requirements.

Reckon you're spot on as far as Martin's ideal value though. I don't think it's a matter of SOS "biting the bullet", as it's probably a price we're fully prepared to pay. It's, arguably, a fair price for the player in question. GC are the one's pushing for a first rounder, but if we hold firm they'll likely relent (sneak the news through behind the King re-signing).

Papley will get done, reckon there are two or three possible ways for it to play out, and it's just a matter of waiting for all the relevant clubs to decide what they're willing to commit and accept back.
