Melbourne might but also might not want him. Risk to take

it seems with PSD stuff if the club approached players manager who says he’s not interested in going there then they pass

Melbourne may not even want to use a PSD pick. Nor Gold Coast.

Can someone explain to me why paying $1m to Martin next year would prevent Melbourne from picking him up? Do we know they can't/wouldn't be thinking the same way as us and then renegotiate his deal?
High likelyhood they don't have the cap space.

Right. Disappeared after that to go cool off. Read some storries to the little one and put her to bed.

25 pages behind now.

After cooling off I still think this trade period is a disaster and poorly managed.

The plan was to hit the draft for a few years then trade for needs. We were pretty open this year was trading for needs.

Easy to say now "Oh Papley was always going to be hard if Daniher didn't move"... well where's our contingancy plan? Butler was there for the taking.

Yes Martin we still might pick up in the pre season draft. That could end up being a win... but it's definitely not gone to plan.

Wines comes to us asking for a trade? Surely if we knew how hard and unlikey Papley was going to he we try get that over the line.

In the end we added Betts (great romance but fills no need long term) and sideways traded a backup ruckman.

There's no sugar coating it. Shocker of a trade period. I'm sure the club are spewing internally!
Wines was never available. A spitball at best.

I reckon there’s a fair chance we’ll take Martin in the ND with one of our later picks. That would save face somewhat. He’s the one I really want.

Not that fussed about Papley. Pick 9 was always too much and consider this: both he and Betts kicked 37 this year.

Hoping they won't have 1m space in their cap to do it.

Papley never available if swans don't get daniher

Carlton weren't going to overpay to get martin. GC asked for too much.

Wines never available

Not going to trade for the sake of trading

Sums it up beautifully

I’m a lifelong Carlton supporter and I’ve been a Suns member for 6 years due to location so I’ve seen a lot of Jack Martin. But I have bitten my tongue (well keyboard) while this trade period has played out so I’m now going to give my honest appraisal of what has just occurred.

He was my favourite player early on based on a few very good games in the early years because he had amazing potential.

However .... he has consistently played about 4 decent games per year and teases with his potential, then goes missing for weeks at a time where he just seemed like he wasn’t interested at all, wouldn’t chase, tackle, or put his head over the ball to make a contest.

He is such a conditional player and chooses when to have a go and when he just can’t give a toss.

On numerous occasions this year I said that the Suns just needed to trade him while he still had some currency because he was playing like someone who clearly didn’t care and didn’t want to be at the club. I jokingly said to my wife that they can piss him off as long as he didn’t end up at Carlton ... then he nominated us and I just shook my head and said “for goodness sake I hope we don’t give up too much for him”.

What happened with Martin today is a very good outcome.
He is not worth a 1st round pick
He is not worth sliding back in the first round, and IMO ... (and in the case of any Suns players, for once I think my opinion counts for something) ...
He isn’t worth a 2nd round pick under 30

So SOS was 100% right not to be bent over on the Martin deal and if he plays another season like this year, he’d be a 4th rounder at best next year because of his give a toss attitude.

This is why GCS surely couldn’t entertain redrafting him in the PSD because they can’t afford to bring him back against his wishes on decent money, just to put up mediocre performances and drag down the club while they’re trying to improve their culture.

They had to make a stand, but it won’t help them in the end. Unfortunately we were in the breach on the occasion that they decided to do so. They have definitely put their club before the player, who I suspect will come out and say (via his manager) that he would rather sit out of footy that return to the Suns after what has occurred.

If we get him in the PSD fine. But SOS & Co. did the right thing today

As for Papley .... what can you do? He is contracted and Swans didn’t want to play ball.

We haven’t compromised by going after lesser quality targets and we haven’t given away the farm for the ones we wanted.

Top post. Thank you.

Why is everyone so devastated? It's not SOS's fault. It takes two to tango and the other parties didn't want to dance. We still have the ability to pick up Martin in the PSD and Eddie is a pretty good short term alternative to Papley. We also have the improvement that should come from our existing players e.g. Cuningham and Stocker. Pick 9 might also be a pretty good player but will obviously be unlikely to help us much in the short term but in the long term ....

I do feel for Papley though - he and his girlfriend must be feeling pretty ordinary just at the moment. Long distance relationships can be hard to live with. Swans could see his form taper off pretty significantly if his home life is in relative disarray.

Another positive - do we really think that * will suddenly be able to resurect Daniher's broken body and lack of passion for football and the club. I think they have massively misjudged this and will regret is for a long, long time.

Reckon our club can overcome this speed bump just like Richmond did when Rance went down this year.
Huh? Rance? Who have we lost?

I feel bad for Cripps, to go from potentially playing with coniglio to having to hope the club can get some maturity through the draft would be a pretty disheartening thing. If they keep failing him like this, he has every right to go and find a club that’ll help him prolong his prime instead of being a battering ram year after year.
Feel sorry for the other players on our list if our captain is like the person you have described........but he isn't

I wonder what GCS could've done by bundling all the picks they have next year, including our second and third rounders.. Now they'll lose him for nothing or have a player that doesn't want to be there. They need to take note of what GWS have done. 🙄 As for us, I'm glad we didn't blink. Our offer was already overs.

If Gold Coast redraft him, he would become the highest paid player at the Gold Coast for one year, then become a restricted free agent at the end of the year. The plan would be to put $1million plus on his head, moving him out of Melbourne's reach. Draft him at #3 in the PSD then renegotiate his contract for multiple years, which would reduce the actual money paid, but the million would still count on next year's cap, where we have the space due to paying under the cap for a number of seasons. Hope that made sense.

Great post OZBomb!!! Martin would be shattered at the moment knowing that he got shafted by his club asking overs after they dumped him to the 2nds last season. I'm thinking he'd be itching to enter the PSD and get the **** out of that rabble.

Disappointed as much as anyone with the outcome, but glad SOS stuck to his guns and not bow to their demands. He looked pretty shat off when they interviewed him.

A few points:

- the AFL screwed us over big time giving GCS those concessions and all of a sudden they become self righteous, and start demanding overs because they already have a plethora of high picks;
- * demanded overs, Swans not prepared to pay, so ultimately the Papley deal fell over. Pick 9 all of a sudden wasn't that important to them as it was tied in with the trade;
- SOS was targeting a-graders this year, rather than stockpiling b-graders....so for those who were pished off because we didn't land Butler or Cutler or Bonar, NONE OF THEM NOMINATED US!!! Last year we landed our big trades earlier, so could then in turn land our moneyball trades late in the piece ie Newman....you keep landing b-grade players and you remain a b-grade team;
- we could potentially end up getting Martin through the PSD anyway, or at the worse as a FA in 2020.

So, we landed Eddie and Pittonet, potentially Martin, a top 10 draft pick like a Flanders or Weightman....and hopefully land a player like Sokol or Riccardi with one of our later picks.

Sounds pretty good to me regardless of the disappointing result tonight.

Apologies if this has been discussed already, just been for a swim in the Gulf of Thailand to try and get rid of this blah feeling.

Does anyone know what the story is with nominating salary for the drafts? From memory, you can nominate a salary in the National Draft (Luke Ball did this), but not the PSD? Is this right?

Found the answer. A player can nominate his desired salary in the PSD...
