Everyone just needs to take a breath. We got Betts. We'll get Martin for free in the draft. Leaving only Papley we missed out on, simply because we're not going to pay overs for a small forward. A midfielder, maybe.. But not a small forward.

Add Newnes as a DFA and it's three players we've added which could very well slot straight in to our best 18.

That's without including the top 10 draft pick we're about to add to the list as well.

Perspective, people.

Sounds good when you put it that way.
Just looked into Newnes on the Saints website - it seems he had an average 2019 season and was delisted. Am I missing something?

------------------------------------------------
Newnes was selected by St Kilda with pick No. 37 in the 2011 National Draft.

The 25-year-old played all 22 matches for the fifth season in a row, taking his tally to 110 consecutive games and third on the current AFL list behind Zach Tuohy (138) and Justin Westhoff (123).

Newnes enjoyed solid outings against Collingwood and Gold Coast, booting four goals over the Magpies in what was arguably his best game for the season.

With plenty of potential and room to grow as a player, Newnes will be determined to bridge the gap between his last two seasons and press forward to a prosperous 2019.
------------------------------------------------

rl91 do you know more about him?
Could this be a value pick up like Newman?

Who do you like that you think might be available around our pick?

Mentioned it many times, if Rivers is there at 9, i wouldn't blink. If the likes of a Flanders slid (unlikely), then would be a great get. If you wanted to reach, as I see huge upside, I would take Elijah Taylor

There are always huge benefits in spitting a mid 1st round pick, so that is a consideration. Get the feeling that the club will be creative again, so I am expecting a Stocker type deal, given the drop in quality and how compromised the draft is next year

Yeah. Can’t blame for them holding their players to their contracts.

Gold Coast were being pricks, but thanks to the AFL’s generosity they can afford to be, and with southern clubs already planning raids on their players, you can see why they did what they did. With Martin it’s small value lost at this point to make a statement on more vital players later on; that the Suns will set the terms, contract or not.

I hope now Martin’s manager will be meeting with the Dees with the story that Martin’s poor form is due to unhappiness and he’s got guys he knows at Carlton in Cripps & SPS and a mentor in Betts, and that’s it’s really in the best interests of all to just let the guy get to his destination.
Agree with everything you've said here MK.

No doubt there would be all sorts of discussions going on between Martin's management and relevant clubs. Not sure if the Dees are in a position to pursue Martin if there is a large price tag attached to him, got a feeling they've spent most of their chips on May, Lever, Tomlinson etc, and we have surplus $$ this year.

Hopefully commonsense prevails at the end of the day after his club has treated him like shit to prove a point.

Port Adelaide are pretty keen on Dylan Stephens and are looking to move up the order. We may downgrade our first for their first plus second rounder and get Martin with the second rounder. Melbourne are making us nervous if he goes to the PSD.

Reg, pointless getting a 2nd rounder now, player trading has ceased

If Melbourne are making us nervous in the PSD, why wouldn't they be making us nervous in the ND? not to mention bringing into play the 17 other teams have a pick before our second rounder.

Cliff notes:

Martin can nominate for the Pre Season Draft, which takes place after the National Draft is concluded.
He can stipulate his contract terms which need to be matched in order to select him.
The draft order is reverse final ladder - GC, Melbourne, Carlton etc.

So yes, Gold Coast could take him first, and have threatened to. But if he stipulates a one year deal for $1.1mil, they'd have to be willing and able to pay him that and fit it in their salary cap. Ditto Melbourne. Gold Coast are already overpaying players to keep them up north, and would probably cause a mutiny if they paid him double what most of their players are getting just to block a move to Carlton. Melbourne certainly don't have that sort of cap space to play with given they've recruited guys like May, Lever and Tomlinson in the past two off-seasons.

So Carlton get him with Pick 3 in the PSD, pay him his $1.1mil in 2020, and sign an early extension for 3 years on $300k per year. He gets to Carlton, he gets his 4x years @ $500k, and Carlton don't give up any picks for him.
Simples :D

I'm finding it really hard to value Martin right now in terms of where would he fall in the ND?

He's middle aged, so that's a knock on him, but he's a known quantity and will be a better player than most, if not all, of the draftable players in the immediate term. Is that worth a first round pick to a team? I reckon a team in the teens would take that chance.

The pool of talent is a lot deeper in the ND, if Martin were to go to the PSD he would be by a mile the most talented player there, why wouldn't Melbourne take him? Unless they couldn't afford him.

Langdon like mentioned previously. Bonar would be better than picks in the 50s and 60s
What we need to ask ourselves is by 2021 when our window begins to open, would players Like Langdon, Bonar etc. ne in our best 25?? Please also take internal improvement into consideration.

Apologies for the intrusion, but there is no PSD this year:

IMO the aflpa would be very against the psd being dropped. It is in place to protect legitimate player angst against a club he wants to leave.
It has never been utilised of late because clubs know that it is there as a backup plan for players, therefore they have to deal ..."or lose through the psd.

The confusing thing for me is that GC would be under the same impression, and the blocking of Martin, could trigger a psd walk. The threat of course is the boofhead club could interfere to protect their pet club the GC SUNS and somehow block the psd option.

There is no doubt that the afl want it to be known that the GC cant be an easy target for interstate raiders going forward.
My mail is that king was "heavily induced" to sign up for the GC and in so doing send a message to the competition that the gc have got their act together.

Now the intriguing thing will be whether the aflpa cave in to the afl and let them close off the psd for martin. Sos and co should be lobbying the aflpa asap to see where it stands on this. If they are going to cave, then we should move one and target other options.

He may make it very clear he doesn’t want to go there and only wants to end up at Carlton.

And he may price Melbourne out of it.

This. Suns May have been trying to send a strong message that they are not going to be pushovers (but in my opinion came across as dicks), but SOS sent his own message as well I reckon about being nobody’s fool. We have a great new coach and an awesome young list, which will grow in confidence next year. We have Murph, Ed and Cripps in the middle to enable the kids to develop and now have Eddie to help organise the forward line. I see no reason why we won’t get even better next year.
I thought SOS showed the softer side to his negotiating style. I think he used the word ”respectful” each time he was interviewed during this trade period.

Just on GCS and it’s tough message, there was discussion on SEN this morning about the possible impact of having to wait for PSD, or the like, on player mental health. In light of that, and having sent it’s message, GCS should now do the right thing; delist the kid and allow him to go where he damn well likes.

At this rate we could have gotten both and you would have found something wrong with it.
Nah it would have been the plan coming into place just as SOS said. Do the Stocker deal and palm off Adelaide's pick for an established gun. Didn't happen so now it's back to the draft again

Bonar who knows. Langdon is underrated. He'd be a good bottom 6 player in a premiership contending side

Why wouldn't Richmond take him with a late first rounder?

The ND isn't the way to get to Carlton. Especially with Port's second rounder (29).

Looking at it really simply, why would we knock back 9 for 15 and Martin only to then trade 9 for 12 and 29 in the hope Martin doesn't get poached in the first 28 picks? Makes no sense. Difference between 12 and 15 in this draft is minimal.

Just googled Elijah Taylor, and came up with a 102kg professional rugby league footballer who plays as a lock, second-row or hooker and is co-captain of the Wests Tigers the NRL.
Not sure if he can football, but would sure give us a fair bit of grunt ;)
