Future Swan stars in Grand Final curtain-raiser

Callum Twomey
Sep 28, 2019 12:50PM

SYDNEY Academy prospect Braeden Campbell starred with three goals in Saturday morning's Under-17s NAB All Stars 'Futures' clash at the MCG.

In the curtain-raiser for the AFL premiership decider, the future Swan helped his side – Team Brown – to a 41-point win over their opposition, Team Dal Santo. The sides were named after recently retired greats Jonathan Brown and Nick Dal Santo, with the pair giving speeches to the respective sides during the week. The game comprised players eligible for next year’s draft. Campbell was one of the standouts. He started brilliantly, kicking the opening goal, and continued to impact the game, including a long-range left foot goal. His work with the ball up for grabs, his disposal and clean hands will have impressed Swans recruiters, with Campbell up for grabs at the 2020 NAB AFL Draft. He finished with 14 disposals and looks set to follow the likes of Callum Mills, Isaac Heeney and Nick Blakey as graduates of the Swans Academy onto the club's list.

He wasn't alone in impressing ahead of next year's draft, with potential No.1 pick Elijah Hollands dominant. The captain of Team Brown had 24 disposals, five clearances and four inside 50s, plus two classy goals. The half-forward/midfielder shapes as a very early selection at the 2020 draft, having also featured for Vic Country at this year's under-18 carnival. Jake Bowey (22 disposals), Will Phillips (21 disposals, one goal and 14 tackles) and Eddie Ford (two goals, 20 disposals) were others to shine for Team Brown, while Collingwood Next Generation Academy product Reef McInnes was exciting with two majors.

Fellow Sydney Academy player Errol Gulden was a standout for Team Dal Santo. The midfielder/small forward gathered 19 disposals, six inside 50s and a goal. Gold Coast Academy midfielder Alex Davies was also consistent across the game, having found 18 disposals and a goal.

TEAM BROWN 4.0 5.2 11.5 16.6 (102)
TEAM DAL SANTO 2.1 5.4 5.5 9.7 (61)

GOALS
Team Brown:

The folks with the "waste of time & money" mentality aren't picking up what the AFL is putting down.

They are going to do............whatever..........it...........takes........to make the Suns successful.

15 academies, pick 1 & 2 from here to eternity, COLA to keep them all on the list.............whatever.

This artificial competition just got more artificial.

Also keep an eye on Tanner Bruhn (VC) & Kaine Baldwin (SA) throughout the early stages of next year who I didn't include in the early top 10 and both didn't play the All-Star games.

Both are likely top 10 picks coming off knee's in 2019.

Baldwin is arguably the #1 KPF in the draft, ahead of even Ugle-Hagan and could possibly be in our consideration.

Thilthorpe seemed to produce some very impressive stats at senior level in the SANFL. Both as a key forward and also in the ruck.

Would be an amazing pickup for us next year.

Worth drafting just to hear Caro, with her lisp, pronounce his name.

The Tassie talent we will no doubt be keeping an eye on.

FIVE players from Tasmania’s under-18 side have been selected in a 30 strong NAB AFL National Academy Allies squad for 2020.

Clarence duo Sam Banks and Oliver Davis, North Hobart pair Sam Collins and Patrick Walker and North Launceston key forward Jackson Callow will join emerging talent from the Brisbane, Sydney, Gold Coast and GWS academies, as well as two players from Murray Bushrangers and three from the Northern Territory.

The Allies squad will meet next month and train from November 18 to 20, taking part in a high performance camp focusing on both on and off-field education.

Devils co-captain Davis, Callow and Collins all tasted Allies action this year, while fellow draft-age player Walker and bottom-ager Banks are debutants to the program.

“The new approach to the national NAB AFL Academy, introduced for the first time in 2018, will again ensure more of our most talented players have access to AFL facilities, while receiving the best quality coaching, high performance and wellbeing services in the country,” AFL national talent pathways manager Marcus Ashcroft said.

“Importantly these players will spend more time in their home states, with year-round first-class support that will enhance their opportunity to perform at an elite level.”

Last week Davis was crowned the Devils’ bess and fairest and midfielder of the year, while Callow took home the forward of the year award and was runner-up to Davis in the best and fairest count.

In all seriouslyness, I assume we're not keeping any special eye on them - no more so than any other promising teenager - if they're not part of our Next Generation Academy.

Western Bulldogs to land next ‘Buddy Franklin’ Jamarra Ugle-Hagan at a discount next year
Western Bulldogs are destined to land the 2020 draft prospect hailed as the next Lance Franklin cheaply after the AFL decided against scrapping the 20 per cent discount for Next Generation Academy players.

Western Bulldogs are certain to secure the teenager being talked up as the next Lance Franklin at a hugely discounted price next year.

Clubs are campaigning the AFL to scrap the generous discounts applied to Next Generation Academy prospects, but the earliest that can happen is in 2021.

The Dogs have priority access to Jamarra Ugle-Hagan through their NGA next year and, without the 20 per cent discount, they would have had to pay a hefty price.

“He’s arguably going to be as good as Buddy Franklin, and very arguably heading towards pick No. 1,” one recruiter said on Monday.

“He’s already committed to the Bulldogs. He’s mercurial, gifted in the air, got good agility, good size although he lacks body strength at the moment.

“He kicked 10 for Scotch in the APS a couple of times last season, so when they start kicking 10 you start taking notice.”

An AFL spokesman mistakenly told the Herald Sun that the discounts would be reviewed after this week’s draft, with changes possible for 2020, however the league later clarified that the 20 per cent discount would remain next year.

Carlton great Andrew McKay completed a review into the bidding system in July this year and, while tweaks were made, the 20 per cent discount was untouched.

Next year’s draft will be extremely compromised with an abundance of academy and father-son prospects headlining the pool.

One expert said 22 of his top 40 prospects were already tied to a club.

Multiple mooted changes have been suggested to the AFL, both to amend the bidding system and to toughen up the eligibility rules.

The most common one is to either reduce the discount or have it only apply after pick 30, which would ensure that elite talents are paid for at market value.

Most clubs are happy for discounts to be applied to all father-sons, enjoying the romance of that rule.

Some also believe that the current rule is fair for the northern academies run by GWS, Sydney, Brisbane and Gold Coast because it is important to nurture players in rugby heartland.

But there is widespread frustration at the potential to rort the system.

There were suggestions on Monday that one wealthy club had started relocating talented juniors into its zone.

“NGAs were designed to help disadvantaged kids and grow the talent pool of non-football families and backgrounds,” one scout said.

“Not for clubs to scoop up already-talented footballers who were always going to make it.”

But Adelaide has access to midfielder James Borlase next year despite his father, Darryl, playing in four SANFL premierships for Port Adelaide.

Borlase played Auskick in primary school but qualifies for the Crows’ NGA because he was born in Egypt.

The AFL does not count Darryl Borlase’s Escort Cup appearances, reducing his senior games tally to 177 and below the 200 required to qualify as a father-son prospect for Port.

Collingwood’s zone covers the rich Oakleigh region and the Magpies are poised to secure Reef McInnes next year after taking Isaac Quaynor last year.

The Magpies were able to match bids for Quaynor (No. 13) and father-son Will Kelly (No. 29) with a suite of picks beyond 40, which also didn’t sit well with rivals.

“If you cop a bad academy area you might not get anybody out of it,” one club said.

“It’s almost gone back to zoning plus some draft picks.”

giantroo wondering if you could tweet the club?

I've got a Sam Banks down on our NGA listings.

He's a projected top 5-10 pick in 2021 and will play a lot of football for Tassie in the NAB League and more than likely will play as an under ager for the Allies in 2020. Some people I've spoken to have him in the top 3 in 2021 at this stage.

Confirming if he's eligible as an NGA selection?

He won the MVP of the u/16 nationals and was named a u/16 AA - He was also a u15 AA last year.

SAM BANKS (Tasmania / Tasmania Devils): Medium defender/midfielder who is an excellent distributor of the ball on either side by hand and foot. Won the Allan McLean Medal as Division Two’s best and fairest player averaging 24 disposals, 8.3 marks and 3 tackles.

He's listed in your above article on the Academy intakes, I believe he's in the underage intake.

Like TT, he made his debut for Clarence in the TSL seniors as a 15 year old this year.
