Ha, nothing wrong with getting a bit emotional

Have you seen the SOS interview, the Angresta interview? They're over the moon... And the media reports? Albeit with limitations, they're not wearing rose-coloured glasses - champ - and they're all reporting a shithouse trade period for the once mighty CFC

A tip for you Bluey24

Ignore the media.

They are addicted to “sugar hits”.

These same “media experts” canned SOS for trading our “good” players:

Menzel
Yarran
Henderson
Tuohy
Bell

Many of same experts now reckon Carlton have the best young list in the league - and much of this list was generated from those trades.

Just because some ex player (with zero List Management experience) or Journo is on radio/TV doesn’t mean he has any expertise in the discussion.

Some of the regulars on BF have far more clue WTF is going on than most “media experts”.

Take a chill pill.

Carlton’s List is in good hands and we have not wasted precious assets on overpriced trades.

We’ve saved our ammunition and have an interesting 12 months ahead.

On reflection, although GC's attitude to Martin appeared silly last night, I can now see where they were coming from, even assuming they knew they were going to lose him for nothing in the PSD if no deal was struck...

Assuming we finish higher than them next year, our future second round pick would effectively be a 10 or so pick upgrade on their fourth pick in next years' draft, after their first round pick, mid-first round pick and second round pick

When combined with the fact that they will essentially draft at least 4 first round picks this year, they weren't risking much by passing on our offer, and at the same time make the 'statement' they were after...

Objectively, don't see this as a particularly bad move from them, and if the roles were reversed I wouldn't mind if Carlton had done the same...
A pick, is a pick, is a pick...

Compromised their power to recruit next season, whether it be an established player or in the draft.

The posturing has led to nothing.

So they got to beat their chests and make a stand to say we'll not let other clubs dictate how trades will go....

Unfortunately, they undid all that work by letting the Ah Chee trade go through, and grandstanding for a player that is OOC and playing in twos...

They slammed their fist and said no to some decent currency and reward for their efforts are that they get nothing and basically embarrassing themselves in front of the other 17 clubs, their members, supporters and the rest of the country's AFL fans.

It's like getting an offer for your car you're going to get rid of, decline it because you're scoffing at the offer, but then take it to the wreckers anyway...

Absolute illogical madness.

There's been a lot of speculumation, and it seems SOS's name may been smeared by not landing Papley. But under closer examination, the truth is some teams don't want to swab their players. There's no need to stirrup trouble, trades are constantly evulvaing.

Haha....I have zero doubt in my mind Barras is given information from someone in the club/recruitment area to provide the real news when it’s decided it’s needed.

Have a read of his posts over the trade period, weren’t many of them but they were spot on.

If he says it’s fact we’ll get Martin in the PSD then you can take it to the bank, that’s as unequivocal as it comes.

Yes. The difference between B70 and other ITKs (with the exception of MS3) is that he was conservative the whole way through in terms of Martin and Paps. No mention of deals done or statues.

If we get Jack Martin in the PSD, then the trade period is a win for Carlton if in the live trading, we swap Pick 9 for another team's 1st Round Pick in 2020.

Then in 2020, we use our two 1st Round Picks in 2020 and our future 1st Round 2021 Pick to trade for an absolute midfield A grade gun like Josh Kelly.

betts will get him

That’s a nuance isn’t it?

Nope - not at all. I think SOS has settled all questions ( again) in his radio interview this morning to Watson and Lyon. Not his fault at all re Martin, as we all know - and apparently Sydney had made it clear to him that Papley was required since they had lost Zac Jones - unless they could get Daniher. His reaction to Butler was (to my way of reading it) yeah naaah...and to Wines 'he was never really put on the table' and 'doesn't wish to speak about a contracted player after trade period' - but if he was to become available in future, "Carlton would certainly sit down with him and his management".

Get the feeling (now) that the only player(s) he was chasing were in fact Papley and Martin - so that is good.

Of course they're disappointed, you idjit :p They were hoping to walk away last night with Papley and Martin on the list. Instead we'll take 9 to the draft in some capacity and aim to get Martin through the PSD. That's not ideal, as it's 5 weeks before those players join the club, but it's not the end of the world.

And using media reports to judge our trade period? Haha! I've read reports that gave us a B+, and others saying we had the worst trade period of any club (even Adelaide who lost more than 10% of their best 22 and replaced them with late picks over two drafts). The media can't be trusted to do any kind of in-depth analysis - it's shallow sensationalism to generate clicks.

Relax, we improved our list a little. We may improve it a little more via the PSD. And we'll grab a few shiny new kids who will hopefully show more than Polson, Macreadie and Co in the next 12 months. On top of that, our talented young list will continue to improve under the watchful eye of Andrew Russell and Luke Power, and our gameplan will become much more attacking and daring under Teague, lead predominantly by (still) one of the league's best small forwards. Our forward line chemistry is going to go through the roof.

So we probably won't do a Brisbane and surge to top 2 next year. Oh well. Finals will, and should, still be the expectation, and is a realistic aim.

And this is why when scrolling down a page, I always stop when I see your avatar and read what you have to say. Very quickly becoming one of my favourite posters sir. 👍

I'm not sold on Kelly being the absolute superstar people say he is. I'm yet to see him do it in a big game or stand up in the big moment.

I did rate him that way 12-24 months ago, but not anymore. I haven't seen him so it when it matters.

I’m nowhere near as disappointed as some on here.

We hold our pick 9 in tact, as well as all 3 of next years picks as well, while there’s a extremely good chance we pick up Martin for free at PSD. Add Eddie and a younger back up ruckman than Phillips was and our trade period actually looks quite decent.

Next year we will have all of our original picks plus future picks as currency to get whichever big names we need to top up for a shot at the flag in a few years time.

Looking forward to Jack Martin for free and Cameron Tehany in the National draft.
Together with Eddie Betts a massive X factor injection, drastically change our game plan.

Haven't taken very much notice of the kids this year as I just assumed we wouldn't have a pick early on in this years draft.

I've just landed in Doha, was on a plane during the final hours of the trade period, my intial reaction was that of genuine dismay and honestly disbelief.

To walk away with basically nothing after having 2 players nominate us hurt, a lot.

Having had time to think about it, I'm actually really proud of SOS, really proud.

We essentially get Martin for absolutely nothing now (bar money of course) and while it sucks we didn't get Papley (and honestly may never get him now) I can't blame sos for that, Sydney were never going to let him go if they didn't get Joey, not unless we sold the farm for him.

Take a deep breath baggers, we're still in extremely good shape heading into 2020.
