Was highly amused watching the last hour countdown last night, the smell of desperation to get a trade done from some posters was hilarious. :D
And embarrassing.

What is the draft order, by the way?

Is it National>Rookie>PSD?

Depending on the lodgement periods for each, we may be able to gauge Melbourne's intentions via their available list spots?

Don't really blame Dodo for holding Daniher. Maybe this was the year that needed to happen to remind players that contracts are contracts - seem to be a lot of players signing extensions and then changing their minds within a few months. That needs to stop. Lesson learned the hard way for Daniher and Papley, lesson learned vicariously for every other player - if you're not 100% committed and happy, hold off on extending or make it a short one.

The issue I have is that Dodo probably should have just come out in week one and said "Nothing you could realistically offer would convince us to part ways with Joe, so we're going to cease negotiations."

Allows teams to move on to other targets, and has Sydney crawling back to the table with a big offer much sooner if they're keen enough.

Even if the net result was the same for us (No Papley, No Martin, Keep Pick 9) at least it would have been one less week of idiots asking about Joe Daniher on trade radio.

I had a look at their board too. It was so strange.

We post in one hour what they do in a day.

We’d be going bonkers if a player like Martin potentially fell into our laps for free out of nowhere. Some solid discussion over there nonetheless. Better than most team boards.

Have you tried typing whilst wearing ski mits?

They all happen in the same two day period.

Wouldn't worry about Melbourne, most clubs are actually very reasonable when it comes to not bringing in (or forcing to stay) players who really don't want to be at the club. Going off the interview with Martin's manager, Melbourne reached out to ask the question, which they absolutely should do, and were told in no uncertain terms that the focus was on getting to Carlton for a number of reasons. That will likely be enough for them, no need to go mucking around with their list strategy to try and clear space and bring in a player who doesn't want to play for them. They'll just focus on lining up a pick swap with GWS that puts them in a strong position to get the players they want most at the draft.

Wines is contracted.

Say PA wanted 2x R1 picks plus 1 x R3 pick.

We end up with Papley situation all over again.

Or we could just pay massive overs (like STK did for Hill) just so we can look good and keep BF posters happy??

It’s always very easy after the event and from the sidelines.

If that was what was asked for then no doubt there was no point pursuing. But considering trading for Wines would have only been dependent on Port, and Papley was both Ess and Sydney, it would be interesting to know what the actual ask for Wines was (rather than your speculation)

Here's a question for the AFL Rules Gurus - if an uncontracted player nominates for the PSD and nobody picks them up, what is their status moving forward?

Say, hypothetically, Martin listed his nominated salary as $3m on his PSD nomination, and no club could actually afford it, does he then get "delisted" by default?

Jack Martin's manager sounds like he's leaning towards skipping the ND and going straight to the pre-season draft. Confirms Martin will not be returning to Gold Coast, wants out because he believes his potential wasn't realised at the Suns and believes he can realise it elsewhere. Manager has also confirmed Carlton is absolutely still the priority, will be working to put a price on his head that Melbourne can't match.

Melbourne have given him a call and they got a similar response that they gave to Gold Coast in saying Martin is focused getting to Carlton.

Spoke highly of Carlton's culture and Martin's association to Paddy Cripps, the support and resources we have in relation to indigenous programs/culture. Martin asked if Eddie was coming.

So from this is it safe to say that he has more or less publicly said his old club didn’t develop him properly, don’t have the indigenous resources/culture he needs, and our culture is better than theirs. Don’t think they will be redrafting him. Oh and has more or less also told Melbourne to jog on.
Me likey

Filing the Nomination automatically delists the player.

If they are not drafted then they have no avenue to play in the AFL in the following season.

I believe so. He's then "out" of the AFL.
