Yep, there's a quote from GC's list manager saying any trade for Martin had to improve their draft position, and our offer didn't.

Lol in what world does a future 2nd & 3rd draft pick not improve a clubs' draft position?? Oh that's right, one where the AFL has gifted GC a shitload of early picks for 2 years, plus much more.

In addition he said this:
Cameron was asked if there was any risk in not trading Martin.
“As I said, we have a really strong hand in the next two drafts, so you tell me the risk,” he said.

So yeah, they have no risk of losing him for nothing thanks to the AFL and they are abusing that fact.

If Gold Coast was smart, they could have packaged our 2nd and 3rd along with one of their 1sts for an established player. Surely everyone except the top elite players would be obtainable with those picks. They offered pick 2 for the 'right player' so they were definitely in the market.

Key word there was 'If'. It's definitely still dumb...i think most in the industry would agree our offer was fair given Martin's situation. They've also completely dogged him as a player, leaving him in limbo and also threatening to re-draft him. They've done him absolutely zero favours and instead put up heaps of road blocks.

I still don't understand GC's mentality. They want to look tough and strong so they knock back our offer. But in the end we get him for free through the PSD.

To me, they just look stupid. All they do is lose the draft picks and they don't seem any tougher to me...
Would definitely make me dread going there even more if I were a draftee

In the context of this makey-uppy AFL administration, I'm not going to entertain the thought of Martin joining for 'free' until it happens.

Stand by for word from Gil and co that the PSD has been formally scrapped for this year (and, most likely, only this year), or otherwise to level charges of draft tampering or whatnot at how this is handled from here (in regard to snubbing Melbourne, for example). Nothing is beyond the AFL here - they have optics and narrative to manage.
And then the AFLPA finally gets its restraint of trade case and blows everything to the shizen.

Their players will be very, very reluctant to sign long term contracts now. I can see Luko and Fiorini waiting until post 2020 season to make a decision.

The one thing we do know is that we won't be playing players out of position. If Gibbo shows his midfield wares through the pre-season he will be playing in the midfield. None of this small forward rubbish.

His role toward the end of the year was perfect. High half forward, work all the way to the back flank then run your opponent into the ground forward to create havoc. Get involved in link up play. Pressure. Rinse and repeat.

The draft picks meant nothing to them. When you're drowning in high-end picks only a first-round pick has any currency. Martin wasn't worth that.

There should be a great deal more anger aimed at the AFL rather than SOS.

Geez that’s a bad look. I’d be interested to know the AFLs thoughts on this. Pissing away picks because they got a handout.

Plan B:

Get Martin Free in PSD. Trade 9 with Freo for future first (so we don’t bid on their academy). Next year trade our first (19) and Freo first for Wines.

I tell you what, SOS can thank his lucky ******* stars with this PSD stuff!

There's absolutely no way SOS considered Martin didn't want to play again for Gold Coast and that Martin would be willing to tell Melbourne he wasn't interested in playing for them....

It's not like SOS would have been in regular contact with Martin and his manager over the last week....

In an interview with Tim Watson & Gary Lyon, SOS intimated he met with the managers before they requested trades to agree on what they both considered a fair price to get the trade done, and Carlton’s capacity/willingness to pay that price. Puts into perspective the idea that this trade period would leave managers wary of nominating the Blues, when it seems they would’ve been on the same page some way out.

In response to PSD questions, SOS said something like - if Jack decides to go to the ND or PSD we will work on a strategy - which I’m pretty sure means “we’re all over it as we speak”.

If we do land Martin via the PSD that's a really good outcome. Pressure is really on to nail this #9 pick, I wouldn't discount us getting creative and doing some sort of pick swap

Wouldn’t surprise me either. Go backwards in this weaker draft and double up first rounders next year. Would give us 3 first rounders to trade next year for a gun mid (inc. 2021 first rounder).

How crow can you go pt.2?

Don't agree with this at all. It effects your whole list over the coming years.

The scum overpaid for Shiel last year, and now, not only is their list is unbalanced, but they've missed 3 years of high draft picks.

This applies to us, to a certain extent - who knows what could have been done with a full draft hand this year.

I still don't understand GC's mentality. They want to look tough and strong so they knock back our offer. But in the end we get him for free through the PSD.

Their mentality was, "We refuse to get bent over the trade period". Hence the hard stance.

Not sure if it was worth losing 2020 picks that could be used for academy bids next year.

They certainly sent a message - to any GC or other player considering a trade or contract extension. Disgraceful plastic franchise.

I don’t get it either. Dont get me wrong - they have to start being stronger and not let blokes just walk out because times are tough. However the Martin trade wasn’t the right trade to do it with. They’ve let him walk to the same club for free. Doesn’t make any sense IMO.

Sos absolutely new what he was doing this trade period IMO
Most of us blinked and shat ourselves whilst sos’s eyelids where pealed wide open.
He new all along that the scenario that played out with Martin could well become reality at the end of the trade period, then calmly flicked the switch over to plan b and said thank u very much Martin will now come on board for donuts.
Just take the risk on Bennell now and watch him take off under eddies tutoring and look out next year imo

with martin, it all comes down to the fact that gold coast have been gifted a heap of good draft picks, so our pitiful second and third round weren't good enough. This is a consequence of the afl giving gold coast picks for next year, I mean that is just ridiculous , gold coast had a heap of injuries this year and already have great young players on their list. I mean what if they win 12 games next year? great hey , at least wait till the end of next year before giving them more handouts. I don't blame carltons list management, I blame the afl. I was a bit angry when the trades didn't go through last night but when you really think about it we were just screwed over by the afl and Essendon, simple as that.

All I can think of is that the AFL told them they had to look tough, and because they’d given them the draft picks to make up for it, that now was the time to do it.
