The difference is there was no form of free agency back then. ALL clubs did it. Not just us. It was how the AFL did things. It was wrong.

Things have changed now and we have a half assed Free Agency system that sorta, kinda works. Hopefully it gets there one day.

You can't compare 2006 events to now.

I see what you're saying, but it was within our rights to not trade him and enter the draft to be picked up by who ever in 2006, just like it was within GC rights to do the same.

The only difference is Martin will most likely get to the Blues. Thornton had no chance to get to the Hawks a d as such, signed a contract.

I’m know that I’m going on like a broken record, but I am extremely disappointed that we’ve missed out on Papley.

I have no issue with our approach to the Martin trade, and am confident that we’ll pick him up in the PSD for nothing.

But given that Papley was contracted, and given that we could get Martin for next to nothing through the PSD, I think we could have paid overs and left Sydney with no choice but to trade him.

On account of the Martin trade breaking down, we could have then given up pick 9 and our second round pick next year for Papley. The net result would be Papley, Martin and we’d still get to keep the third round pick that was supposedly offered for Martin.

Given that Papley was contracted, we had to pay more than his market value. We benefited from this exact scenario with Gibbs. And I simply don’t accept that he wasn’t available. If we offered up the picks I’ve suggested and called up Papley’s manager, he’d be straight on the phone to the media saying that Papley can’t play in NSW and might give up the game next year if he’s not traded and in doing so force Sydney’s hand.

Leaving aside the fact that our list is not in the position of being to make an offer that can’t be refused, with all due respect the post shows almost no understanding of the commercial landscape for players in the AFL.

Is this what ITK's alluded to on previous posts about reneging and intervention?
If this is true then there is the possibility that the AFL also cancels the PSD or blocks our run somehow.

Not that I necessarily believe it, but they'd be apologising for seeing the deal fall through.

It's a great result for us if Martin does get to us for free in the PSD, but we'd have preferred to do a deal.
