So DFA period.

Guys I wouldn't mind us looking at:
Sam Gray, Jack Newnes, Sam Murray and Bennell for a punt.

Names that interest me:

Riley knight - midfield support, tough
Rupert wills - midfield support, tough
Sam Murray - we need a rebounding defender
Harley bennell - IF fit, is a star
Jack Martin - obv
Billy stretch - can play?
Newnes - high quality for DFA (we seem keen)
Cody Hirst - wanted him mid-season draft
Fletcher Roberts - his name literally interests me. Can't work out if he fights pirates, owns a menswear chain or is a high court judge.

Newnes would be a very shrewd pick up. Very solid player at his best but looks like needs a fresh start. Also the best part about him is that he's durable.

But it doesn't solve the small forward problem...

I'm not a fan of Knight.
Wills and Stretch are VFL footballer and not up to AFL standard.
Murray and Bennell there past worries me, I'm not sure we have the culture to deal with them yet.
Martin 100%
Newes or Gray as a stop gap could work.
Hirst I don't see what he'll add to our team.
Roberts don't see the need.
If we didn't pick up Betts, Dickson or Puopolo would be worth a look.
We should look at Masten will add a bit of mongrel to our team. There were times this year I thought we were to nice.

Prediction:
We won't get Martin in the PSD

Carlton and the Gold Coast suns will trade picks before the national draft.
Gold Coast will at the same time, conveniently delist Martin.
Carlton will recruit Martin as a delisted free agent.

Now my guess:
Carlton give 9, 43 and 57
Suns give 15, 20 and 78 (delist Martin)

Why would gold coast do that? I would take that in a heartbeat as a carlton fan.

neither club would do that, and the AFL won’t allow it

We don't have a small forward problem.

While the Teague Train was on the tracks our pressure and retention was "up there" with the best in the league, Add superstar offensive threat in Eddie and it is no big issue. Papley would have been spectacular, but we will still be improved. Cuningham has plenty to offer if his body improves. The pressure from Gibbo and co was (dare I say it) elite, late in the season. Owies untapped. Martin has some forward creds despite being more mid/winger, and is 99% ours.

Fair chance we will pick up a young forward prospect for Eddie to mentor. If we don't jump early on one of the higher rated kids, someone like Josh D'Intintosante with a later pick is a fine prospect.

Why would we give them 9? He's gone, he's out the door, he's not coming back. Call the Suns' bluff and make it abundantly (albeit politely) clear to Melbourne he has no interest in playing for them.

Even though we 90% guaranteed martin will be a blue, this will 100% guarantee it and contract $$$ can be worked out better, plus we get 2 picks inside the top 20 - apparently a pretty even draft, pick 9 & 15 wont be much different.

Unless of course we have plans for that no.9 pick to trade out for a different deal - but if we are going to the draft with pick 9, id trade it on that scenario (but it wont happen - GC wont do that deal)

We wouldn't do that deal - at least I certainly hope we wouldn't.

Keep 9, take Martin for nowt, give the Suns' the middle finger for trying to take us for a ride.

Is it possible for Martin to delist himself in the manner of Jason Tutt and then we simply pick him up as a DFA?

Not sure why people think we need to do a deal with the Suns.

I am pretty sure we will be in no hurry to do a deal with them any time soon, let alone do them a favor.

GC are not our worry re: Martin. They can huff and puff all they like but he will not be there in 2020.

Melbourne is our only slight concern at this stage.

It was one predicted deal with suns by cfc05. You never know, they may come back with their tail between their legs and offer a deal that is too good to refuse (plus 100% guarantees we get Martin - which is 90% at the moment)

Another good outcome everyone has overlooked this week is retaining caz.

I still see rick combo as kreuz/caz and when he’s injured Pitt/caz

Was def playing best footy of his career at the end of last year. Glad we didn’t have to give that away to negotiate a trade.
