From the footage and reports I've read and seen, Kemp will hopefully be our target if he slides to our pick. He looks like the archetypal modern footballer and would fit nicely into our midfield. Cripps, Walsh, SPS, Setterfield, Dow, O Brien, Stocker, Fisher and Kemp. I'd challenge anyone to nominate a team with so much young talent coming through the midfield

I rank my realistic wish list as follows:
Kemp- at 193 very versatile, could be a Setterfield clone
Stephens- outside run would help our team immensely
Jackson- undersized ruck but plays like Kreuzer.

The problem with the above picks is both Kemp and Stephens are the type that will go higher closer to the date and SOS doesn't pick rucks in the first round.

IMHO I’d target a couple of mature midfielders ready to go and support structure in the engine room or wings . DFA and PSD.
In the ND recruit X Factor look at Tehany, Pickett, explosive excitement machines.
Eddie on board makes all the difference, will give us an opportunity to stop being risk aversive .

Look, it sucks to have done it before you are even drafted in the AFL but nowadays we are more equipped on rehabilitation and modern technology that it's not a career ending injury anymore.
Sometimes you may have a few outliers like Daniel Menzel and Dale Morris but as long as the individual is diligent in their rehab and does everything they can to get back, ACL injury is not that big of a deal.

What other teams do well with three 192cm plus midfielders?

The stats for players re injuring their ACL are huge, there are many reports online regarding this. A player who has done his ACL has a 6 times higher rate of re injuring the graft than someone who has never done it.

Whilst Kemp might have a good career, it’s too big of a risk for a player taken in the first round, let alone top 10. If it was in the second or third round I wouldn’t mind, the fact that he’s 192cm is also a big concern for me, 3 mids over 192cm is not good for team balance.

Our greatest needs are MATURE PLAYERS & SMALL FORWARD & SMALL DEFENDER

We don't need to use pick 9 for any of these.

2019

1. split Pick 9 for other high end picks (possible that one of these is 2020 pick)
2. draft a small forward with pick 15'ish (to be determined when draft order becomes more obvious)
3. draft small defender with late pick or rookie pick

OR

1. trade Pick 9 for 2020 picks to be used for mature players

1. chase FA's and
2. trade picks for mature players.

Stephens looks the kind of player we need. Great footy IQ, pacey and a decent finisher. Reminds me of Polec in the few snippets I’ve seen.

Has bolter all over him unfortunately, and imagine a number of clubs would be happy to take him early. Suits Melbourne too a tee.

Problem with Stephens is he is totally left sided like our man Fish, can’t have to many players that only have one side to there game as they get caught out when teams work them out, my preference would be Lachie Ash to work in tandem with Doc off half back, more dashing than Doc and has a great kick on him and isn’t scared to hit up the dangerous corridor kicks, the other would be Young but will almost certainly be gone by pick 9, watch his kick into the corridor in the dying minutes of the VicC vs WA game that almost wins them the game, big balls.

it might be 6 times greater, but what are the odds of someone doing an acl in the first place? How many get done in the afl per year?

You can guarantee whoever we pick with this selection, they will have pace and an intent to use it, defensively and offensively.

I don't think there is a place in our midfield for a tall midfielder. You don't want too many, we well and truly have our quota. Shorter, stocky, quick, prolific and good pressure/tackling are the requirements for both the forward line and midfield now.

I think we showed our intent in this area chasing Martin and Papley.

As a generalisation we need players with a combination of pace, hardness, skill and an ability to use it. Up forward and in the midfield is priority but also in defence as well.

Think we can forget key position players, more rucks, medium forward/defenders and tall mids. It will be the quick and talented players who have the right balance we will be after from here on.

Hopefully clubs chase the more key players with the real early picks. Talls, bigger mids etc. Pick 9 is usually a prime pick in most drafts.

Part of that is structure, gameplan and empowerment though - a lot easier to be ballsy with your kicking when the team knows it's on and the coach has given you license. Reckon Teague will be all over this like a rash, and SPS, Jones, Weiters, Newman, Williamson etc. will be encouraged to pull the trigger more often than we did under Bolts. They're all capable of doing it.

Agree with the earlier sentiments about picking up some "x-factor" if available. Clubs don't let those players go, so they tend to be harder to drum up via trade. There's usually some available later in the draft, but it's usually "project" types with a couple of tricks but no consistency to speak of. If there's someone thereabouts who can dazzle a few times a quarter, impact the scoreboard, and still does the defensive stuff - they should be high on our list.

If there's no Pick-9-quality x-factor, take the bloke with the hardest scone and hunger for the contest, and unleash him on the VFL. Give me another Stocker-type competitor.

There seems to be a bit of an infatuation with big midfielders on this board when it comes to draft/trade and with already Cripps,KennedySetterfield,Dow,Silvagni,Stocker,Walsh,Cunningham and even Curnow C thats 9 players with midfield ability over 184cm.

How many is too many ?
I would be thinking a kid like serong/henry/weightman etc would be exactly what the carlton team needs

Could be some interesting discussions about pick 9 if we are certain that Papley and Wines are going to try and get here next year. In saying that I think the consensus will be to use it in the draft although if this situation comes up a decision could be made on this pick right on the buzzer when our name is called up on draft night you would think.

Would be a tough one as there is no guarantee with trades, but none with draftees either.

I would be thinking a kid like serong/henry/weightman etc would be exactly what the carlton team needs

IMO we have plenty. It's smaller, quicker midfielders who use their pace and have a physical edge where we are short.

We've chased Coniglio, Papley and Martin and picked up Betts so the club is all over this as it would indicate.

Midfield is like any other position, you don't want to have too many tall players and we have plenty all over the field.

I think we are going to go small and quick for the next few drafts.

My only comment to this is, statistically if you can get two years from the injury you statistically have the same chances as everyone else.
ACLs are a two year recovery, you can play within a year but you're not fully healed until two years.

The important factor here isn’t really height. It is speed and agility. If you have a 190cm + mid with the same burst speed and agility as a 180cm one - you take the 190 every day as they should have the advantage of reach and marking.

If we had 3 x Cripps clones playing in our midfield it would not be that strong due to lack of speed.

But to have Cripps, Setterfield and Dow (if the latter two reach their potential) I think we don’t need a 180cm zippy type as Setters and Dow have agility and enough speed.

So to me - if Kemp is available - even though he is 193cm, if he has the burst speed and agility plus the ability to play tall forward or back - this would be a fine addition to the team.

We already have Fisher and Cunningham who both have speed and zip so I don’t think we Need another small mid. But if SOS rates a smaller type like Serong or Stephens and they are available and he rates them over Kemp, then that is the best option.

I reckon if we got to pick 9 and there were no decent midfielders, small forwards or perhaps no good attacking half backs then that is when you would look to trade it for a future first but it's pick 9. I'm sure there will be a quality player who fits our needs. No point taking a player we don't need but such an early pick that surely won't be an issue. If I was willing to bet trading it will be discussed but I am sure we will find a really good player.

Correct.

He doesn’t get any bonuses for “telling the truth in public”.

So I listen to everything that SOS says in terms of “what do I want the other clubs to hear”.

He wants all the other clubs to think he intends to pick up a gun in the draft - in a negotiation what else is he going to say?

Don’t really think he’s going to front the media and state “this draft is shit - I can’t wait to get rid of Pick 9”.

Doesn’t do much to strengthen his negotiating position...........

So maybe he’s telling the truth and maybe he’s posturing.

Time will tell.
