What went wrong with schuey..? He looked like he was going to be decent
With some young players you can watch them do one thing - it might only be one piece of play - but you see it and you can instantly say: "This kid's gonna make it."

Schumacher's holding the ball against West Coast was that moment. But in reverse.

Interesting, and at worst it lets SOS know he doesn’t have a free pass. Apart from a few late picks and Gibbons as a rookie our use of later selections has been appalling.

Nailing (and seriously smashing some) of these early draft picks does kind of paper over those obvious misses.

Is there any bigger example than drafting O’Dwyer and Polson as late ND picks?

SOS might still be at Carlton next year...it’s a matter of finding a suitable replacement.
So Agresta not the replacement? Does this imply bigger changes?

would be intriguing to know what metrics they are using to judge SOS and team as it is genially recognised our list is talented but young - or is this not the view internally?

SOS's drafting has been terrific. Have a look at the side. You don't get many miracles from late in the draft.

Williamson wasn't a bad one at pick 51.

So far, drafting in SOS's time only Kerr and Schumacher have been delisted and they were only squeezed out more than delisted because they couldn't play as we had too many of their types.

If departs now he should be commended on what was done to the list on 2015

It takes a brave list manager to know where your at...he knew and he used it to advantage

Sure he didn’t nail all the late picks but at least he did nail all picks 30 and under...some recruiters can’t do that!

Paps/cogs would have been the cherry on the cake re: his legacy but not to be!

Our deficiencies in latter picks has been in full view for a couple of years now.
Absolutely no surprise at all, it even for some of the fluff given to them previously.

Schumacher was deemed to be not have a football brain, but which brain brought him to us in the first place?

The hierarchy we have via list management and recruitment hasnt been right since day one.
It needs an overhaul and should get one. Trim the fat.

It’s been good, but if you’re looking at a each selection individually there have been far too many misses - it’s a case of our early picks being very good and masking how poor our drafting in the later rounds has been.

Only Williamson and JSOS are best 22 currently from our late ND picks (and both are on the fringe) and Gibbons is the only quality rookie-listed player we’ve taken over four drafts.

I doubt we’d be upset with what we’ve managed to bring in so far, but SOS needs to show some dexterity and begin finding some later gems.

That aside, his trading has been fantastic to this point.

That's nice spin. It's not true, theyre not afl standard. If this were true they'd get picked up elsewhere. Our list isn't strong enough to be squeezing people out yet.

Also you've completely ignored the many rookie draft misses.

I can understand GC wanting to make a stand on losing talent.

Just doesn't make sense to do it with a player who is unconctracted and whose destination team has an early PSD pick.

OK idea, poor execution.

Pick battles you can win.
Well that’s the thing though...was it poor execution or have they got something up their sleeve with the afl?

My understanding was that Liddle was primarily responsible for initiating recruitment of Brandon Ellis which then caused public heat on SOS when this was reversed.

Was there not some discussion with the recruitment dept in regards to a history of missing out on targets by being too stingy that involved management?

Did not SOS originally say no to Betts then to be overturned by a backdoor approach through Teague?

Likely SOS was pressured in the final stages of trade in regards to Martin & Papley.

A possibly interpretation is that SOS has drawn a line in the sand, namely, that he has the final say in recruitment decisions or he walks.

Brandon Ellis please why add a player who adds nothing for 600 k for 5 years
Not all premiership players are good right place right time

Reading through here and a certain ‘in the know’ facebook group, claiming SOS won’t be there next year. Any truth to this?

I’d say some have hit the nail on the head re late drafting and rookies. Just look at what Stephen Wells is doing at geelong.

Late picks could be better but are anything from a disaster. A lot of people seem to be towing the company line of our late pick drafting being disastrous.

Consider this list and take out the injuries. 4 drafts, is it really that bad?

Late Picks who can play
Jack Silvagni (Can play pretty well), Macreadie (Can play, lots of injuries), Tom Williamson (Good player, lots of injuries), Goddard (Can play but is depth in a strong area), Gibbons (not a star but can play)

Late picks who aren't terrible, just not great
Polson (Seems to have stalled), Kerr (ok player, no spot), Alex Silvagni (Older player, too many injuries, could play), Schumacher (was ok but no spot), Deluca (Not a bad player, perhaps has become un-needed).

Too Young
Ben Silvagni, O'Dwyer.

There are probably teams out there doing better with late picks. I think the biggest issue for us is the injuries to our late picks along with our side not being all that good for certain types to develop in, particularly forwards along with our young list not being in a position to take in talented but questionable characters.

Certainly an area we could improve in but it's far from disastrous.
