Former Port Adelaide small forward Sam Gray landed at the Sydney Swans via the 2019 delisted free-agency period. The South Australian booted 83 goals in 96 AFL games after arriving at the Power as a rookie in 2013, his highest return a six-goal haul against the Western Bulldogs in Round 23, 2017. Gray will compete with names like Ben Ronke, Lewis Taylor and Sam Wicks for a spot in the Swans’ forward line in 2020.

Swans secure delisted free agents

The Sydney Swans have secured Sam Gray from Port Adelaide and Kaiden Brand from Hawthorn as delisted free agents on Friday.

Will be a serviceable pickup, walks into the best 22 as of right now and could probably give Parker a bit of a chop out and allow him to rest forward more.

There's definitely been a lot of discussion and what it usually boils down to is that we like him when Ken isn't trying to play him as the sole stay at home forward against multiple defenders who have a significant height advantage.
 
Good get for you guys, we offered him a deal and wanted him to stay, but he was no doubt being phased out for our juniors and decided to take your offer. He will play AFL for you and will be a solid contributor. The main knock on him is finishing ability, he can be a bit hit or miss by foot.
 
Can play mid, gut runner, gets to the right positions, spreads well, very good link man, gives 100%.

Delivery not as bad as some suggest. The Port board always have a whipping boy. Next year it will probably be Bonner.

Not a matchwinner, though his pickup and give to Motlop to win a Showdown was sublime.

Will add to your culture.

Sad to see him go, particularly without getting his 100 games at the club, but I understand that they want to play a number of youngsters.

Slots in ahead of a few of the fringe players who were getting games this season. Handy pickup for nothing for a legitimate first grader. Hope he has a great career with us.

Where do you think his best spot is? Across HF? Deeper in the forward line given it is alongside a tall? Pushing up to the wing?

Great player and glad he has gone to your lot.

Our coach for some bizarre reason chose to take an inside mid and play him exclusively as a KPF. Not only that, but had a guy that can't reliably kick 40m consistently be in positions to mark around 45m out from goal. It's been a frustrating few years.

Good coaching and good structure would make him a really solid contributor. Good luck with Frodo!

He's far better inside than you might think and it was his initial position in the team. Hard to get a run inside at Port as we've been overstocked there for so long.

I saw that actually, over 2015-2016 he averaged 21.5 touches, 5 tackles, 3 I50's, and 3 clearances a game.

So we might have more of an inside midfielder on our hands than many of us expected. Our fans have been clamouring for inside midfielders so maybe this will help.

More interesting than the averages are the highs. At the end of 2015 he had three games in a row with over 34 possessions, one was a 37 possession, 10 clearence match. He hasn't been used as a midfielder for a while, but there is definitely evidence that he can be effective in the role. It could be a very astute signing.

Played starting mid late in Port's 2015 and 2016 seasons and found plenty of the ball (5 games with 30+ disposals)

Expect that he'd spent some big minutes in our midfield. Would be more fruitful than running Papley through there.

Josh Kennedy: 36 in 233 (2010 - current)
Luke Parker: 11 in 195
George Hewett: 4 in 93
Sam Gray: 1 in 96
