The Selwood Decade... we may never see anything like it

he’s also a ‘bleeder’, which makes people assume he goes in harder than others.

In reality he’s just soft/thin skinned. The slightest incidental knock which wouldn’t split 99% of the population open results in Joel donning yet another head bandage.
chuckle.. we only deal with illusions.. and we hope it is a short change persona...

Free kick numbers have declined over the years, going down in the mid 1990s, on average there are 25 - 30% less free kicks today, as compared with the 1970s.

Note here that Selwood is the only player to have played post 1996 on this list.

We may never seen anything like it?
We’ve seen it already champ, at a much greater rate.

Don Scott in the 70’s - 680 free kicks

1970 - 1979 there were 108,500 free kicks given.

Ian Nankervis from your mob got 743 free kicks 1970 - 1979, Don Scott had 680 as you said.

By contrast 2010 - 2019 there were 76,627 frees given.

So trying to bring up Don Scott as a "much greater rate" is a farce, as Don Scott only had 9.3% more frees than Selwood, compared to the 29.4% more free kicks in the period of 1970 - 1979 as compared to this decade.

Selwood is at a far greater standard deviation.

The Geelong Decade.. what do you want me to say? the self serving the selwood decade....

get on board to issue an injunction to settle a bet... we cattle aren't snorting the slice of life...

And other people who do it also get free kicks. Selwoo does it more so gets more free kicks. He also has a good technique for avoiding tackles which also helps with frees just like putting head over the ball helps.
Did I say he was the “only” player?...Have a read again champ & come back to me.
Joel ****ing Selwood puts his head over the ball nearly 50% more than any other player? All praise his innate courage and foresight to be the only player intelligent enough to put his head over the ball.

I like the fu... king selwood.. that is about the touch me and shove it all.. got me winding up northwards...

Under the new tightened interpretation, if a tackle is reasonable and the ball carrier is responsible for the high contact

Selwood is able to shrug the tackle majority of the time anyway... It's not like he's buckling to the ground like Puopolo, Walters, Gray etc..

So many whiney, envious fools on here, it's hilarious...

Here we go again. Like a broken record. The AFL expressly declared some 5 years ago that what Selwood does is not illegal.

Your response is just so typical and naïve.

That Selwood received so many frees is testimony to the fact he was first to the ball. He wasn't a receiver. It is also testimony to the fact that opposition players became lazy tacklers when it came to Selwood. Instead of tackling around the waist in a way that no player can shrug out of, opposition players tackled Joel Selwood around his chest enabling him to slip his shoulder so the tacklers arm ended up around his neck. Wouldn't you think coaches and opposition players might have cottoned onto this a bit earlier instead of whinging and carrying on??????

Lol so every player in the afl becomes a lazy tackler when they see duckwood.

Good players, who play within the rules and respect the game like Fyfe, Martin, Cripps, Ablett and Neale are widely lauded. Selwood on the other hand is a cheating prick who the wider football community can't stand. Nothing to do with envy.

The one thing selwood has going for him vs other guys who have tried the arm lifting bullshit is he breaks the tackle more than half the time anyway and continues with the play, so the free wouldn’t have mattered that much. Guys like Lindsay Thomas would straight up go to ground when they dropped the knees.

Yeah, except in the last couple of years of his career Lindsay Thomas couldn't buy a free, even when they were blatant

So many morons on this board these days, manifesting itself in this thread.
Not one of you flogs would say no to having Selwood at your club all these years.
Oh give me a spell no one is saying he is a bad player, he has been a star for over a decade. He is just a star that ducks.

It is what it is.

Anyone who wouldn’t have wanted him playing for their club is talking sh.t.
Where defenders cheating when they grabbed jumpers and chopped arms when it was allowed?
No.

Selwood will be inducted into the Legends hall of fame one day because he is something outve the box one of the most decorated players to have played.
And people saying he bleeds because of soft/weak skin...it’s called scar tissue.
In his first year he was bottom age won the Rising star played in a Granny and drew comments from Tom Hafey and Leigh Mathews as something they hadn’t seen at that age before.
One of the youngest to become Captain in a team that were still in a Dynasty.
I can’t believe people in a forum thats created because of a love of Australian Rules Footy want to run him down.
He’s one of the greats, there’s no two ways about it.

winty has challenged that parroted line for a decade. To this day no one has provided a skerrick of evidence that supports the ducking claim.

Not one person has, or can.

Good post. It's pretty illuminating that the biggest whingers in this thread and bigfooty more broadly are entitled, arrogant Hawthorn fans.

Ok this is getting pedantic now

Do you believe any players in the AFL duck?
Shuey probably was the closest. And christensen. Other then that there are no players that have made it a feature of their game. Its more one offs. Rioli did it a few times but not consistently enough to make it a feature. Ducking was something done by players in the eighties and has long been eradicated from the game.
