2019 AFL draft - Jackson at 3, Pickett at 12 and Rivers at 32

Does anyone else get the feeling that we're going to do something devastatingly stupid with pick 8? And I don't mean drafting Jackson. Just get the sense they have either a huge reach or a dumb split in mind.

Pickett predicted to be picked up in the 30's last week, this week he has been invited to the first day of draft night amongst the top 20. A small forward from SA. Could this be it??? :)

Don't you need to be on multiple club's lists to get an invite? Like how they select kids for the Combine?

Pickett is the exact player we need, but is it a stretch at 8? Especially if Kemp or Jackson will most likely be available? If we do split pick 8 with say Geelong for maybe 14 and 24, then yeah, I can see us getting Pickett at 14. I'd still prefer Kemp at 8. Looked on track for top 3 before the knee. Young and Kemp could mean we end up with 2 kids who are top 3 or 4 potential. But Pickett looks like a kid who'd be fun to get behind. Going to be interesting to see what we do..

Aww yeah * using pick 8 on him ment id rather Pickett over some short bloke who can jump. i didnt see * all in his vids to go woohoo lets use 8 on him he is gonna pull goals out of his ass his whole career. Id definitely be going Young and Kemp from the * all ive seen of them dont see why wed trade out all our picks to get 8 just to go back down the order.

I agree it would be strange to trade in pick 8, then trade it away for 2 picks lower. There is talk we might still do something like that though. Several teams keen on getting up the draft board. If we end up with lower end picks in the 1st round, I'd say that's not a horrible result if we can snag a Pickett and a Stephens type. Stephens, Young and Pickett would be a very decent draft. However, I'm still set on Kemp at 8.

Again, I'll preface it by saying I'm terrible at these (cue abuse), but GC Pick 15 & 20 for our 8 could work if we have players in mind with their picks?

This is a given with our recruiting track record. You cannot not be worried we’ll do something stupid. For every Oliver we pick up we seem to need to shoot ourselves in the foot by wasting a high end draft pick on someone like the Weid.

My main worry is that Kemp will still be on the board at pick 8 but Goodwin and Taylor will baulk on him owing to pressure being on their jobs and needing more of a quick fix type of player for 2020. I could see us drafting Weightman for example for the immediate impact he could have around goals.

If Kemp is a top 3 quality talent as several keen observers have noted, and his medical prognosis is sound, then we have to take him ... or watch on as he becomes a champion of the Blues (9) or Hawks (10). He won’t get past them.

If they rate Weightman as best available and better than Kemp (which he very possibly is) it's not stupid IMO. I'll cop that. I just hope we don't draft him or anyone else based on needs (ie a reach).

That would basically mean we’ve traded our 2020 first, pick 26, and pick 50 for 15 and 20. I don’t like it.

Caleb Serong was on SEN this morning and said that one of the most impressive conversations he's had pre-draft was with Simon Goodwin.

Doesn't mean anything really, as Goody would've spoken to many of them, but I doubt he would've found him 'impressive' if Goody wasn't showing an active interest in him.

I think part of it is, to players, clearly not to media and fans, Goody actually is very impressive. All of the current players speak of him glowingly, and we've managed to bring in Lever, May, Langdon, Bennell etc in recent years when all had no shortage of suitors chasing after them at the time. Whatever he says behind closed doors, it does seem to resonate with players really well. If only he'd show some of it outside of those doors, because otherwise he's boring as batshit.

Getting your high end picks right half the time is fine it’s about average across the league, getting it right none of the time is the problem or as the club has done the last 3 years not even give yourself a chance.

Take the highest rated kid on your draft board at the time of your pick and hope for the best or trade down for more assets if you receive a too good to be true offer, more picks more chance of success hopefully

Strongly agree with this, it makes Goody even weirder I reckon.

There was an article about May and his drinking/injuries this year which was really insightful and May came out and said that Goody hit him with some hard truths which were difficult to hear. It really crystallised the idea that there's a significant gulf in between the public and the private with Goody.

Depends on what he means by impressive. He might have been impressed with his own conversation and thought he did well.

"Goody asked me how my day was and I said "Good", so he said "That's good." and I said "It is good." and then he left. I thought it was a really good conversation."
